- Alternative Timelines: These stories go according to canon for some extent, but divert from it at a crucial moment. Some are called "fix-it fics", since they rewrite the story in order to undone consequences of certain events, and others "denial-fics" because they totally ignore certain canonical events.

- Crossover:

The author takes two fictional universes and make them
interact: fandoms literally collide. Most of the time these stories involve the substitution of characters from one universe for those of another or their addiction to the main character team on a given universe.

- Predictive:

All those fanfictions about book or movie series that are written while waiting further canonical informations are under this category. They become AU as soon the new material is released.

- Reality Swap:

Involves actors of movies or television shows that may find themselves in the very fictional universe they work with, or the fictional characters that may be thrown in the "real" universe.
