When You realize you Should have Studied

The next time we traveled into Drakardia, it was the next night. I'm glad we weren't randomly slipping into the dimension anymore, but every night was getting a bit tedious. Also, no, I won't go into huge detail about the day before, it was a pretty boring day at school, I'm sure many of you can relate.

So when we woke up in Drakardia, it was morning. I don't know how time passes around here, but it was weird.

I was the first person to cross over. All my friends either hadn't fallen asleep yet, or were just somewhere else, so I limped up to the top deck. The ship was moving quite fast, I peered over the edge and saw the water splashing past the hull as we sped along. There were a few humans out, one man steering the ship, one in the crow's nest, a few wandering around and tying ropes. The sun was coming up, sliding out of the water to the east. There was a fine wind coming across the water and the sails were full. It was a pretty neat ship.

"One might say, that it's...ship shape." Torien said cheekily from behind me.

"Hey, how's it going?" I asked, ignoring the pun.

He flicked his grey tail back and forth. "Good, have you talked with you sister lately?"

I sat down, and curled my tail around my legs. "She's been ignoring me for a few days, she had a fight with our parents this morning when they noticed."

He gazed solemnly out onto the water. "Do think it might be my fault? I don't think she likes me very much."

I snorted and chocked, remembering my promise to stay out of it. Last time I had intervened with one of her crushes was not a fun time.

"She definitely, does not dislike you. Probably, maybe. There's a good chance." I gave him the dragon equivalent of a thumbs up.

He didn't look convinced. "She's always avoiding me though."

I put a paw on his shoulder, almost losing my balance. "Torien, bro, girls, are one of the biggest mysteries in life. Us men, will never understand them."

"Ditto." Oswin dropped out of the sky.

I jumped, startled by her sudden appearance.

"I will never understand why you're so loud all of the time, I could hear you from the crow's nest." She explained.

"Oh, uh, how much did you hear?" Torien asked, blushing.

She smirked. "Enough."

Then she spread her wing and gestured at the sky. "They have different constellations here, I've been up for the past hour talking with the crew and getting to know the way of the land. The 'we're from up north and are clueless' story works quite well."

"Cool." I agreed.

"Hey guys!" Phira joined, bouncing over. Othniel followed her from below deck.

"Hey, has anyone seen Maple? Or Janice?" He asked, looking around blearily, still not a morning dragon.

"You're about to step on me." Janice said, appearing from behind a barrel at his talons, she was holding a small fish in her jaws.

As much as it grossed me out, I started drooling, I hadn't eaten anything in Drakardia yet.

"Where did you get that?" Othniel asked, probably feeling as starved as I was.

Janice blinked. "I caught about ten, it's an anchovie, we passed a huge school about twenty minutes ago, we could probably still fly back and catch some more if you're hungry."

My heart sunk. "Uh, is there anything on the ship?"

She blinked at me with her calculating yellow stare. "It's just a quick flight."

"We, don't exactly know how to catch fish." Torien supplied.

She tilted her head. "I thought you came from up north. What else do you eat up there?"

"Meese-I mean moose, and geese." Oswin supplied.

She furrowed her brow, clearly confused. "Oh."

Coming from California, I thought those kinda sounded like animals you might find in Canada, but I had no idea. I had yet to experience my first snowfall.

"Oh yeah, those are delicious." I agreed, Torien nodded viciously.

Maple suddenly came skipping up from below deck. She was holding a small basket.

"Hey guys, you hungry?" She questioned happily, opening the lid, there was more fish inside.

"Yes!" The five of us answered at the same time.

She sat down on the barrel, and started throwing them out. Mine slipped out of my hand, and I chased it down the deck. The girls caught theirs perfectly, Othniel squeezed his and it flew upwards and hit him in the face. Torien missed his by a long shot, and it flew over the side on the boat. Maple handed him another one, gently.

I wasn't sure how to eat it then I figured it was like sushi. There were a lot of sushi joints near Los Angeles. I bit into the side of it, and chewed thoughtfully, it wasn't that bad, and it was very salty. I made quick work of it, removing the skeleton and feasting on it's organs.

I held the skeleton with the head still attached, while everyone stared at me.

    "What?" I asked.

"That was very neat." Maple complimented.

    "That was gross." Othniel shivered.

"Aren't you going to eat the head?" Janice begged, I tossed it to her, and she swallowed it whole, then regurgitated it in small bites and started eating those.

The other shrugged and started nibbling on their fish. Maple took out one and bit into it.

"Is that good for you?" I asked her, as she chewed it merrily. "The raw fish I mean, you're human."

She froze, fear flashing on her face for a second. "Oh, uh. I like the taste."

    I nodded. "Okay."

Then it hit me. I really hope I didn't just food poison my human self. Oh well, at least it wasn't chicken.

"So you guys are from up north? Do you live on the ice or an island?"

"They live on the ice, I just moved there." I supplied.

"So you're from Skylark, what's it like there?" She asked, Janice looked up from her fish head to stare at me again.

"Oh, uh." I suddenly realized the hole I had dug myself into. "It's...a nice place."

"There are lots of dragons, right?"

I nodded. "Oh yeah much more dragons then up north."

The four of my companions were glaring at me suspiciously.

"Oh, but the dragons up north are cooler." I said hurriedly.

"Really?" She marveled.

I realized I probably should have studied before putting myself in the spotlight.

"Hand me another fish will ya?" I asked, stuffing my face to avoid conversation.

It was going to be a fun day.
