Five Dragons on a Boat

"So." Maple took a bite out of her apple, where the banana went I have no idea, "what are three drakes and two dragonesses doing on a boat? You all look older then ten."

"Ten?" Torien questioned.

Othniel coughed. "Right, we are older then ten, our wings have grown big enough for us to fly, because that's what happens when dragons turn ten."

Very smooth. I vaguely recalled reading something like that on Sherbet's website. Thanks goodness Othniel was here otherwise we would probably have to do a lot more explaining then any of us actually knew how to. She had led us under the deck, where there was enough room for the five of us to move around among the cargo. Maple was sitting on one of the crates.

"Okay, so why are you taking a boat? It's not that far of a flight." She asked again, putting down the apple.

"Why are you taking a boat?" Phira said back, curling her tail into a coil.

Maple shrugged. "I need to get somewhere."

"Well we need to get somewhere as well." I finished.

"Fair enough." She agreed.

We got talking after a while, just chatting. Maple at one point asked for our names, so we introduced ourselves.

The the small grey dragon landed on her shoulder.

"We'll be setting off soon." The dragon said in Maple's ear.

"Good, everyone, I would like you to meet my Custos Dragon, Janice."

The small dragon blinked her approval.

Othniel set his jaw. I got the feeling I wasn't the only one who had no earthly idea what a Custos Dragon was.

Maple looked at our blank faces and laughed. "You guys must be from up north, I heard they don't have Custos there yet."

"I am a dragon mind you." Janice said. "The same way wyverns are dragons, and sky-slicers are dragons. We're special, we find a human to attach to, either on their eleventh, twelfth, of thirteenth. We watch over them until we die."

"I found Janice on my last birthday." Maple grinned like she was remembering something wild. "That was fun."

"We've only been around for about a decade." Janice explained, "It's understandable that there are still dragons out there who haven't heard yet, although I would have thought you would have felt it."

"I was quite young a decade ago." I pointed out, nestling myself down, my left arm ached from supported more weight that usual, I should really work out more.

Janice blinked again. "True."

She was staring at me. I got the chills. I felt as though she were trying to suck secrets from my brain, her very gaze seemed to say, 'tell me everything'. It reminded me of a gecko, which creeped me out. I got bitten by a gecko once.

The ship started to move, and the conversation died down. There was no turning back now. I wonder, when we raveled back, did we come back to the same spot we left off? It was a very confusing process.

"So," I started, a while later. The sun was setting, I was getting really tired. "Is there a place to sleep around here?"

Maple yawned, pointing with her finger towards the side of the boat. "Yep, the hammocks are that way."

"Come on guys." I announced. "Bedtime."

I wasn't the only having difficulty getting into a hammocks. At least they weren't human sized. Once I was snuggled safely within the fold of the cloth, I eventually fell into a small slumber.

Then of course my eyes snapped open and I was back in my bed. As a human, things were a lot bigger. I dragged myself out of bed, and got ready for church. When I received a text.

I frowned, tapping on the screenshot he had sent me, and reading Sherbet's response.

"It's a bit late for that lady." I mumbled to myself.

"What was that Asriel?" Ariel asked, from in front of the coffee machine. I didn't even see her walk into the room.

"Oh, uh. Nothing. Just talking to myself." I said in excuse, now to survive the day, and expect another adventure filled night.
