Chapter Nine
Six months had passed since Goku's death. This left only six months before the saiyans would arrive to destroy the earth. Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Krillin, Chiaotzu, and Yajirobe continued their training under Kami's watchful eye. Meanwhile Gohan had finally learned to survive in the wilderness where Piccolo had left him. Goku continued to run on snake way, trying to reach the end in order to see King Kai. As for Mae she didn't care about the looming threat of the saiyans, all she wanted was her brother back.
One day as Gohan was enjoying a meal of berries a drooling t-rex approached him. Gohan looked up at the beast and greeted it, "oh, hi. You really don't give up." The dinosaur roared in response and made to eat him. Gohan jumped up and took off running. He turned around and made a face at the t-rex, "nynah nynah!"
The dinosaur continued to chase him until Gohan suddenly jumped high into the air. The t-rex slammed into a rock pillar, becoming dazed. Gohan drew his sword and grinned, "time for another slice!" He brought his sword down on the t-rex's tail, slicing clean through.
As he held the steak up on the end of his sword he asked the dinosaur, "don't lizards' tails grow back?" When the dinosaur didn't answer him he went a few paces away and started a fire, using his energy. He held the steak out and began to cook.
Above the young boy, Piccolo watched, "he seems to have this down. It's time for the real training to start."
"Yaaaah!" Gohan yelled as he went in to kick Piccolo. He kicked out rapidly but only met Piccolo's hand. Gohan jumped back and went in for another attack, however before he could hit Piccolo suddenly vanished. Gohan looked around confused. "Where'd he go?! He disappeared!"
"Look behind you," Piccolo said as he kicked Gohan in the back. The boy cried out in pain at the sudden hit.
"You went too fast!" Gohan said, rubbing the back of his head. "I couldn't see you!"
Piccolo crossed his arms, "don't try to see. Just feel."
Gohan stood and dusted himself off. "I don't know what you mean," he grumbled. "It's not fair that way. If I can't see you..."
Before Gohan could complain more Piccolo sent beams from his eyes to shock the boy. The boy yelled in pain and his hair stood on end. "If you have time to whine then you have time to act," Piccolo said. "Remember you only have six months. You will eat, you will sleep, and you will fight with me. Now prepare yourself."
"But-but I'll die," Gohan stammered.
"Or become strong," Piccolo smirked. "Stronger than me, and the saiyans who come to destroy us."
Gohan looked at him in disbelief. Before he could respond Piccolo began attacking, trying to build the boy's defense.
While her brother went through a harsh training with Piccolo, Mae had finally learned how to control her energy. Every day when she went outside to "play" she went to the spot where she had seen her father train. In the far corner of the meadow an enormous rock sat. Mae cracked her knuckled and stretched her arms.
"Today is the day you move, rock," she said with a look of determination.
Mae put her hands on the cold stone and began to push with all her strength. Her feet dug into the ground as sweat beaded on her forehead. She ground her teeth together and closed her eyes. As she took a step forward she lost her footing and slammed her face into the rock. She cried out and put her hands over her nose to stop the blood from spurting.
"Ow, ow, ow," Mae whined as she ran to the water edge. As she cleaned her face tears trickled out of her eyes but she quickly wiped them away. "If I can't even move a rock then I won't be able to beat Piccolo." She wiped her face with her shirt, glad she was wearing black. She didn't want her mother suspecting anything. She didn't want to add anymore stress to Chi-Chi.
"Gotta try again," Mae told herself. Again she went to the massive boulder and tried to push it. "Come on, move," she strained, trying to find more strength in her tiny body. She forced herself to move forward, digging her feet into the ground. This time she was sure not to lose her footing.
Her arms were shaking and her muscles began to twitch as she began to force the boulder to move. Her head felt like it was going to explode but she pressed on. Finally she felt the boulder give way and start to move away from her. She let out a breath and a smile came over her face. "Just...a...little...more..." she urged her body.
She managed to push the boulder a whole foot before she couldn't take the strain anymore. She flopped onto her back and laid in the dirt. "I...did...it," she gasped, trying to fill her lungs with air.
After a small break Mae got back on her feet. She needed to practice fighting and using her energy. She remembered her father saying Piccolo was the strongest person he had fought and she remembered how quickly her uncle had brought him down. She closed her eyes and made a pretend image that Goku was standing in front of her. When she opened her eyes she could still see the pretend Goku. This was how she had been learning to fight over the months. Even though it wasn't real it gave her what she needed to build up her skills.
After a few hours she decided to go home so her mother wouldn't worry. When she came in she did her studies until dinner and after that, it was bedtime. She waited until she knew Chi-Chi was sleeping before sneaking out of the window in her room. There was still more training to do.
Mae went and found the highest cliff she could. She almost fell over trying to look at the top. She took a deep breath before starting the climb up. After what felt like forever she finally reached the top. Her arms were trembling and she was out of breath but she made it in one piece. She looked up at the night sky and calmed her breathing. The cool air ran through her air, making her skin prickle a little.
"If that guy could fly there's no reason I can't," Mae said as she looked over the edge. She couldn't see the bottom, but that wasn't going to stop her. She centered herself and drew out her energy. She formed a small orb in her hand and watched it hover for a few seconds. "I just need to do the same."
A small amount of fear got caught in her throat as she stepped to the very edge. "There's no time to be afraid," she told herself. "Not if I wanna find Gohan." She put her hand to her chest and felt comfort in the feeling she had from her brother. Knowing he was still out there gave her hope.
"Ready..." Mae prepared herself. "And...jump!" She pushed off the ledge and out into the emptiness below her. The wind stung her eyes as she plummeted. Fear laced her body and for a moment she forgot what to do. Her breathing picked up and she panicked a little. "Oh no. Daddy help me!" She cried out. But then she remembered that no one would be able to help her. She had to do this on her own, and quickly.
The ground was fast approaching as Mae closed her eyes and focused herself. She let her energy float around her, wrapping her body. Suddenly she stopped mid air. She slowly opened her eyes to see the ground inches from her face. She felt strange as she righted herself. She looked down at herself, amazed to see that she was floating.
"I did it!" Mae cheered. She flew up higher in the air, letting the wind rush passed her. "I did it! I did it! I'm gonna come find you soon Gohan!" She took off through the air back to her home. When she landed she was exhausted. She was barely able to climb through her window and get into her bed. She closed her eyes, satisfied with her progress for the day.
While his children made progress with their training, Goku continued to run along Snake Way. Panting, he slowed to a walk. "How...How much longer...i-is this...road gonna go on?" Goku wondered, out of breath. "At this rate...the year'll be over...before I even see this...Lord of..." he suddenly trailed off as he spotted something. "It's the tail!" he exclaimed. "I did it! I'm here!"
Goku looked ahead to saw nothing in front of him except fluffy yellow clouds. "Except here is nowhere," he looked around frantically. "No it's gotta be here!" He looked up and saw a small orb. "Eh? Some round thing?" Suddenly it hit him. "That's gotta be it! He's gotta be up there!"
Goku jumped up excitedly and headed to the round thing. As he got closer he realized it was a small planet. "I knew it! There's a house!" Goku cheered. Before he could celebrate too long he was pulled down to the planet. "Huh? What's happening?" He asked as he slammed face first into the ground.
Goku strained to get on his feet. "What's with this ground?" He asked as he managed to get up. "L-like I'm being p-pressed down by some force. Like my w-whole body is lead." He looked ahead and saw a monkey sitting in front of him. "O-Oh! That must be King Kai! He's got a strange form but..." he brought his hands together and bowed respectfully to the monkey. "G-greetings! I am Son Goku! I seek training from you."
The monkey looked at Goku for a moment before lifting it's arms into the air. It began to walk around strangely while saying, "Ooh, ooh!"
"That must be the training," Goku said as he observed the monkey. "I'd better follow." He raised his arms up and began to walk in the same fashion as the monkey. "King Kai, what's with this ground? It's so...so hard!"
Goku continued to follow the monkey making the same "Ooh, ooh," noise.
"Here I thought he was the monkey," A strange man with pointed ears and blue skin said.
"Huh?" Goku stopped to look at the man. "Wh-wh-what? Wh-who?" He stammered.
The blue man began to chuckle as he scratched his back. "These bites...always so many flies around me, heh heh heh. I am the Lord of Worlds!"
"Whaa? Then who's that?" Goku pointed at the monkey.
"That? That's Bubbles," King Kai answered.
Goku nervously rubbed his head, "heh, I thought that was weird."
"You thought it was weird?!" King Kai exclaimed. "Say, you still haven't laughed at my joke. All the flies, get it? Lord of the Flies?"
"Uhm, what?" Goku blinked in confusion.
"Oh I get it. Too nervous to laugh eh?" King Kai replied. "Of course that's understandable. Let's try another. Do you have pigs feet? Yes I do! Wear shoes and maybe no one'll notice!" he began to snicker once he told the joke. "Oh that was a good one."
"A...A good what?" Goku asked, still confused.
"You came for a reason I suppose?" King Kai asked, shortly.
"Yeah! I want to be trained by you!" Goku bowed slightly.
"Forget it!" King Kai frowned. "If you're too stupid to laugh at a great joke like that, there's nothing I can teach you."
Goku suddenly burst into laughter, "that's a good one! What a joke! The Lord of jokes is what you are!"
Kai Kai stood proudly, "Heh, I am aren't I? Guess you're a little slow."
"So you will?" Goku asked.
"Train you eh?" King Kai said with a light chuckle. "Okay, I'll do it, if you pass the test."
