Chapter Eight

Chi-Chi sped across the water, towards Kame House, in her father's car. She had an angry look on her face since her husband and children hadn't returned the night before.

"Now Chi-Chi," Ox-King began gently, "don't be too mad."

"Shut it, dad," Chi-Chi snapped. "I told them to be back by dark."

"Goku hasn't been to Kame House in a while," Ox-King said. "Probably had a lot of catching up to do and lost track of time."

"Well good for Goku," Chi-Chi said sarcastically. "The twins have school."

"Mae and Gohan are only four years old," Ox-King said. "They can miss a day of preschool."

Chi-Chi scoffed at his statement. "It's a competitive world. It's never too early to get an edge."

At Kame House Roshi and Krillin were sleeping along with Mae. That night, while she slept, they made the decision to cut off her tail. When she woke she felt a bit strange and when she tried to walk she stumbled a bit. She looked back and realized the reason she was off balance was because of that. Mae stumbled over to Bulma who was working on repairing the Saiyan scouter. Bulma was completely focused on her task. She watched Bulma for a moment until she grew bored and sat on the ground.

Suddenly Bulma jumped up, "hey! I did it!" She turned to see Roshi and Krillin sleeping. Angry, she pulled out a machine gun and fired at the sleeping pair. Mae covered her ears at the sound of gun fire. "If I don't get any sleep fixin this thing then you two don't either!"

Roshi and Krillin were now awake with welts from the bullets. They both looked at Bulma with a fearful look, but they also thought she was crazy, firing a gun in front of a small child. They looked at Mae who had a calm face, leaning against the turtle.

"Hey, turtle lover, get up," Bulma gestured to Roshi.

"Turtle lover?" Roshi repeated as he stood.

Bulma pressed the button on the side of the scouter. "I changed it to our numeric system. Lets see...139, a reading of your power level."

"139? That's impressive, but how does it figure it out?" Roshi asked.

"What about my power? Bulma, what about mine?" Krillin asked eagerly.

"Krillin is...woah! It's 206!" Bulma exclaimed.

"206!" Krillin looked at Roshi. "I could kick you around the block!"

"Are you sure that thing is fixed?" Roshi asked flatly.

Bulma used the scouter and looked at Mae, "she's got a power level of 5."

Mae's eyebrows twitched. That wasn't going to be enough to beat Piccolo and save her brother. She silently thought to herself on how she was going to get stronger.

"The best part about this saiyan scouter, is that it spots powerful people all over the world and it tells you where they are," Bulma added. She suddenly got a reading, "huh? There's a 250 about 3000km away. Who could that be?"

"250?" Krillin repeated. "I know! It's Tien Shinhan!"

"A 177 over that way," Bulma pointed.

"I'm guessing Yamcha," Roshi said.

"And a 329," Bulma looked over. "But who's that?"

"It's got to be Piccolo," Roshi said, making Mae perk up a bit.

"Oh yeah, then Gohan must be there too," Krillin said. "Sh-Should we g-go save him?"

"My heart says yes, but my brain says that Piccolo took the child as a part of a larger plan to save the Earth," Roshi said.

Mae continued to listen quietly as they talked. Maybe they might give her a hint. She put a hand on her chest, feeling her connection to Gohan.

"What do you think would happen if we did try and save him?" Roshi continued.

"He's 329," Krillin said fearfully. "He'd slaughter us."

"Tch," Mae crossed her arms. They wouldn't be able to help her. They were too afraid of Piccolo. 'I'm not afraid,' she thought to herself. 'I'll train myself and become strong, just like daddy.'

"But now, thanks to this, we'll be able to find Yamcha and everybody else," Bulma said. "If we split up the other five dragon balls will be easy to find. We'll be able to bring Goku back in no time!"

Mae wanted to say something to Bulma but before she could a voice from outside called out. "Yo! I said YO!"

"Is that a voice or a falling log?" Krillin asked as he opened the door.

A portly man stood there with long spiky hair. "s'me."

"Hey you're the guy who was at Korin's place," Krillin remembered. "uhh, Itchy-robe."

"Yajirobe, idiot!" He snapped. "You did that on purpose," he grumbled. "This is a stupid place for a house. Korin didn't tell me it would take so long ta find ya."

"Korin?" Krillin asked.

"He knows wassup," Yajirobe said. "He says you an' the Yamcha guy, and Tien something, and Chiaotzu, gotta get over there now."

"Everybody at Korin's why?" Krillin asked, slighty surprised.

"Kami is gonna train us," Yajirobe answered. "Me too."

"He-he-he what?!" Krillin was taken aback.

"Yeah. I said I didn't wanna fight those wha'doya call em aliens, but Korin..." Yajirobe began.

"We'll be there! All of us right away!" Krillin interrupted.

"Later," Yajirobe turned around. "I done what I was s'posed to." He walked back to his car and turned his head. "Almost forgot, he said don bring Goku back to life til the bad guys get here."

"What? But why?" Bulma asked.

"He's trainin in hell," Yajirobe answered. "Ask the old witch." With that said he got in his car and sped off.

Mae followed the group outside. She wondered how her father could be training while being dead. Knowing that Goku wouldn't be brought back any time soon, sealed the fact that she would have to train on her own, find her strength on her own.

"Training in Hell?" Krillin gasped.

"Oh my, oh my," Roshi shook his head at the new development.

"Huh, he's coming back?" Krillin asked, spotting a car on it's way toward the island. As it got closer he said, "no, it's not him."

"Heyyy!" Ox-King waved. "Master! Master it's me!"

"Ack!" Roshi exclaimed. "Not Ox-King and Chi-Chi!"

When they got to the island Ox-King jumped out of the car and bowed to Roshi. "How're you master? It's been so long!"

"Huh? Oh yeah, fine," Roshi answered.

Krillin and Bulma shared a nervous look while Mae ran up to Chi-Chi. "Mommy!" she hugged her legs.

"Mae," Chi-Chi rubbed her head before looking around. "Where's your brother? Where's Gohan?"

"A bad man took him," Mae told her.

"What?" Chi-Chi asked, she looked to the others for answered.

"Well the thing is..." Roshi said before filling them in on what had happened.

"Taken by Piccolo?!" Chi-Chi exclaimed.

"What was Goku doing while this happened?" Ox-King asked.

"Dying mostly," Roshi rubbed his head.

That was too much for Chi-Chi to take and she ended up fainting.

"Mommy!" Mae exclaimed and tried to shake her.

Ox-King took Mae and Chi-Chi back home. Chi-Chi needed some rest so Mae fell under the care of her grandfather. That night, while Mae was supposed to be sleeping, she snuck out of the house and walked to a nearby meadow. She wore loose fitting clothes, a long-sleeve shirt and some sweat pants.

"Just gotta think about what daddy used to do," Mae closed her eyes and pictured her father training.

"Mae! Were you watching me train again?" Goku had asked.

"Uh huh," Mae nodded.

"Heh, you're gonna end up a fighter like me one day," Goku laughed and rubbed her head. "Come on over and get a closer look."

Mae opened her eyes and brought her hands up like she had seen Goku do many times before. After, she began to train herself to fight.
