Chapter 9 - A Return To Reality

Chapter 9

A Return To Reality

Obsidian

"Obsidian, the dragons are near. I can feel it," Veronica whispered.

"Feeling it doesn't count for anything, Veronica," I told her. "Check it with your DDD."

Veronica pulled out her DDD. Nothing showed up.

"I told you that you can't sense a dragon," I said.

The DDD beeped. It read DRAGON DETECTED.

"I was right," Veronica said. "I am a wizard."

I ignored the last comment. The DDD told us to travel north.

"But that's where the Pit of Eternal Doom is..." I said. Why would the dragons be going to the Pit? Traveling there was practically begging for death.

Master floated towards us. "Which way shall we go?" she asked me.

"North," I said. "There are a bunch of dragons near the Pit of Eternal Doom."

"Is there a group of dragons in a... safer location?"

"No," I said. "This appears to be the only group of dragons nearby."

Master smiled. "Of course it is. Did you hear what happened with my dragon unit?"

"No, Master," I said. "What is it?"

"They practically destroyed the Alliance capital AND killed one of their leaders!"

"Quite impressive for the barbarians," I said. "Any other news?"

"No. Just more of the same." Master paused. "I should call the dragons and have them meet us at the Pit."

I was a little worried about the dragons coming. I knew I wasn't myself around them. Sometimes, I felt like there was something Master could do with them that she wasn't. These dragons were stronger and smarter than they looked. Even the Alliance dragons seemed nicer than the savages Master described.

We marched on to the Pit. Luckily, the enemy dragons weren't there yet, but our own dragons were. Our dragons were huge with the red scales that Master used to despise.

"What are we supposed to do Master?" the dragon commander asked in a voice that chilled me to the bone. I looked up at the dragon's gaze, which I had been trying to avoid. That was when I lost it. I could see something decidedly human in this dragon. I didn't want to kill dragons anymore.

"I give up," I said to Master. "I'm leaving the Blood Seekers."

I walked away from the Pit of Eternal Doom. I glanced back at the dragons one last time, knowing I was saving their lives by doing this. They deserved better than being pushed around by Master and so did I. I would find a normal job and live my life in peace. I could only hope that the dragons would soon realize Master's evil.
