Chapter 1
Soft metallic clanks echoed in the large living room of a dark mansion, along with friendly chatters. The sound was coming from a dark boned skeleton who was well known as Error Sans, Destroyer of AUs, across all the Multiverse. What such a terrible being was doing, you might ask.
The Destroyer was knitting. Simple as that. The skeleton feared by all was knitting, a soft smile adoring his face while he listened to his friends' childish banters.
One of his close friends, an energetic skeleton cloaked of blue, whose name was coincidently Blue, was the one for who he was knitting. See, the young –well, young for Error, but with all the Resets UnderSwap experimented, maybe that statement was wrong– skeleton's birthday was soon –he couldn't really say how soon, he was bad with time, but he made sure to put a reminder on his phone so that wouldn't be a problem– , and his dear bandana was destroyed in an... Unfortunate accident including glitters, the King of Negativity's goop and, somehow, a flamethrower. Therefore, Error thought it would be nice to make a new scarf for his friend. He knew Blue didn't like to have his neck uncovered because of the many Genocide Runs were he got his head cut off by his human. He had a slight scar on his neck because of those Runs.
The new scarf was simple for Error; a baby blue scarf with some specks of dark blue accompanied by white stars and a nice snow-looking gradient at the end. Fairly easy to make for the Destroyer, who used his dear strings, changing their color to fit with the idea he had in mind, but he knew Blue would like it... At least he hoped he would. He finally finished it and opened a one-way portal to some random store on the Surface of a Pacifist AU –he didn't really care which one, all that mattered was that there was what he was looking for–, grabbing what he needed to wrap his gift before closing the portal.
Still not paying attention to the persons with him in the living room, the black boned skeleton started wrapping his gift, putting the scarf with a puppet of the blue skeleton that he previously made as a second gift. When done, he smiled and opened a portal to his ho-... His prison; the Anti-Void. He then placed the neatly wrapped present on some on his strings decorating the nonexistent sky of the white hell, so it could be hidden if Blue decided to come see him.
Once that was done, he closed the portal without listening to the Voices of the Anti-Void who tried to scream at him to do his job and got up and turned around, finally noticing that the discussions of his friends had stopped and that they were all behind him, previously observing him knit Blue's scarf. They all looked at each other, now that they were caught in the act, and smiled nervously.
"Heyyy Error... Want some chocolate...?" said a monochrome skeleton named Cross, slightly panicked because he and his comrades had been caught stalking the big brother figure of the team. He wasn't sure that Error would appreciate it, and was ready to sacrifice his beloved chocolate to save his nonexistent ass.
Error sighed, waving his hand in a "no problem" gesture, not without taking the chocolate of course. His love for the sugary treat was well known after all. "WhY wERe YoU AlL wAtChiNg Me?"
A skeleton with a big hole on the left side of his skull smiled slightly before answering. "Well... We like to watch you knit... You always seem so calm... And happy... It makes us happy to see you like this, sorry Error." His claim was followed by the three other skeletons nodding in agreement. The next one to talk was a skeleton with black tears running from his black eye sockets and a target –his soul– in front of his chest. That was Killer. "That was for Blue's birthday?"
Error simply nodded. Finally, the last skeleton in the room, who was wearing a hoodie with its hood up and was slightly covered of dust –Monster Dust, of course–, more so then the others –Horror being mostly covered of blood rather than Dust actually– spoke. "I'm sure he will be very happy. He'll love it, no doubts!" Error laughed. "I CerTaInLY HOpE So, HeH."
"Soooo... You're not mad that we were watching...? We can continue?" That was Cross, who looked so hopeful that Error only wanted to take him and put him in a pillow nest to protect who he considered one of his siblings. He smiled and shrugged. "Eh. I dON'T mInD sO... I gUeSS?" The reaction was immediate; the four skeleton yelling a common "YES !!", making the Destroyer smile even more, before his four friends jumped on him to hug him, laughing happily. Thankfully, they worked on his past haphephobia, and even if he was still uncomfortable with touching most people, he could now handle it. But with his dear family, he had absolutely no problem with hugs or any kind of contact.
Nightmare's gang was like a family; Nightmare acting like the dad, stern but loving and protective, and the others acting like the children and siblings; play-fighting, joking around and traumatizing their poor dad with pranks, a ton of glitters and pink paint. They didn't really know what Error was; he acted as the mom friend, but at the same time like an older brother –quite ironic considering that he is way older than Nightmare, who is the father of this makeshift family– to the gang, therefore, he was sometimes called "Big Brother", and other times "Mom" by the member of the "Evil Sanses". Nightmare himself sometimes calls him "Brother". That was special, their family didn't make much sense, but they didn't care, they loved each others and that was all that mattered to them. They gave their dear family the affection no one else would give them. The whole Multiverse could collapse for all they care, as long as they still have each others.
They were a group of misunderstood Sanses. Everyone thought they were evil, when really, they were just a family like any other, trying their hardest to protect the Multiverse and being blamed for all the troubles because of their actions and pasts.
Error, for example, was hated because he destroyed AUs, but nobody ever asked why he did this, or if he really enjoyed it. They always just assume that he destroys because he loves it and enjoys others' suffering. It's not the case, really not. Actually, it's far from the truth; Error absolutely hates destroying, he loves most AUs! But he is forced to destroy some to keep the Balance between Creation and Destruction, and therefore protect the Multiverse from collapsing into the Void. He was taken from his own AU, he saw it getting destroyed by falling into the Void, and even if he doesn't remember much about it, he still remember their screams of pain and how his friends and family pleaded for mercy while their code was s l o w l y getting ripped apart and put back together. He was tortured, tormented, drove to insanity... But nobody ever saw his good side beside Blue and the Gang... Possibly, also Fresh, he wasn't sure of their relationship. Fresh was Neutral at best, and seemed to like hanging around him.
Nightmare was also hated for spreading Negativity, which was his job. He didn't have a choice; he also had a Balance to protect, the Balance between Positivity and Negativity. Too much Positivity was bad, and too much Negativity was also bad. But Dream didn't seem to care, always saying that he could redeem himself if he stopped being evil... Dream was always blind anyway, Nightmare didn't know what to expect from his so called twin. Of course, he still loves him –Dream IS his twin after all!– but most of the time, he just wants to slap him and hope he gain a brain from the shock. Seriously! Their first purpose was to protect a tree who was representing both of their sides! Souldn't it be enough to make him learn of their Balance?! And he had the audacity to ask himself what happened to his "dear" brother! He wasn't ever there when Nightmare needed him, when the villagers bullied him! Sometimes, he ask himself why he still considers Dream as a brother after all this.
Cross was abandoned in a destroyed AU. Nobody he knew was with him, apart from the ghost of his Chara, who's constantly following him around. At first, they fought over the control of Cross' body, but thanks to Error, they learned to become friends. Ink, when he discovered his AU, attacked him, thinking that Cross was responsible of the destruction. He was left badly injured, and would have died if Nightmare didn't sense his negativity and didn't save him.
Dust lived through a hell of endless Genocide Runs, with no Pacifist at all, which slowly drove him to insanity. He needed to stop this, by any mean! That's why he killed everyone in his AU, gaining LV and overpowering his Frisk's determination. He stopped the genocides, but constantly regrets the price to this victory. He still wear his brother's scarf, his personal treasure that he would protect with his life, just like he would give his life to protect his new family. Nobody but Nightmare's gang knew that his room had at least one thing in honor and memory of all his old friends. He would never thank Nightmare enough for saving him from his loneliness and his past AU.
Killer's story wasn't that different from Dust's; after countless of Genocides Runs, he finally accepted his Chara's deal and killed everyone before killing them. He then met Nightmare, who first took his feelings away –before he started to consider the gang as his family–, but soon gave them back thanks to Error. People only care about his previous lack of emotions –they don't even know that he got them back, which is ironic since Dream is supposed to feel others' feelings– and the fact that Dust and him killed everyone in their AU. That's why they're considered evil, nobody cares that it was their only option and that they were desperate.
Horror came from a Neutral Run that didn't end well, at all. His AU's Undyne became the queen after Frisk killed some Monsters, Asgore being one of them, and quitted the Underground, leaving the Monsters behind to suffer, the SOULs long gone, and with them, all their hope of ever getting out. Soon, the food started to lack, and Monsters were driven to insanity and starvation. The queen is the reason Horror got a huge hole in his skull, which was pierced by one of her spears. At first, he only joined Nightmare because of the promise of food for his brother and himself –he can't find it in him to care for the others anymore–, but now, he's happy that he agreed and love his family more than anything else. He still regularly bring food to his dear brother. But the only thing people from other AUs remember is that his AU was forced to feast on Humans to survive. Horror see the disgusted glares people send him before the fight start.
Blue, even though he isn't officially part of Nightmare's gang, is a member of their makeshift family. He was kidnapped by Error when he was still insane, and helped him, before Error explained the Balances to him. He is really intelligent and mature, but everyone always treat him like a child. He hates it, and that's one of the reason he loves the "Bad Guys" so much; they actually treat him like a damn adult! Like a normal person! He isn't a child anymore! By Toby Fox, he is the one paying for his and his brother's house! Talking about his brother, this overprotective prick seems to forget that Blue is the older brother. They actually made him hates blueberries, since they always call him Blueberry. He despised that name, but they never listen when he asks to just be called Blue. He knows that this is nothing in comparison to the hell the gang has been through, but he is tired of the so called "Good Sanses". Honestly, he only stays with them to act like a spy. And he is quite proud that Nightmare's gang trust him with this job.
This is the so called "Bad Guys" of the Multiverse, and their loyal spy. They were all misunderstood in a way and that's what made them so close to each others. That's what make them a family.
But enough of the presentations, let's go back to the infamous Destroyer of Worlds. Once free from his four friends hug, he left the room, wanting to find the King Of Negativity and spend some time with him. Error knew where to search; the library. His close friend absolutely loved books, and spent most of his time there or on his throne. Sometimes, he also went in the Mission Room to prepare plans against the Star Sanses, or to plan how they would spread negativity. But his best bet still was the library.
He quickly arrived in front of the room, having memorized the entirety of the manor after so many years, and opened the door silently, smiling to himself once he caught sight of the leader of the team. He knocked gently against the door, knowing that Nightmare probably already knew he was there because of his aura.
"HeY NIgHt." The goopy skeleton looked up to see his glitch friend and smiled before grabbing him with a tentacle, gently placing him on the sofa with him and keeping the tentacle to hug his dear friend. "Greeting Erry. What brings you here?" Error shrugged, smiling peacefully. "JuSt wANtEd To SeE oUr fAVoRiTE oCtOpUs bEfoRE tHe SqUiD cReATe a NeW Au." Nightmare rolled his eye at the mention of the Creator, bringing Error closer in his protective embrace. He hated Ink for all the pain he put Error through daily.
The glitch skeleton took out his knitting needles, wanting to knit something but not having a particular idea in mind and deciding to just wing it while enjoying Nightmare's surprising warmth. He was pretty good at that. The gang leader just continued to read his book, smiling softly, his tentacles swaying happily behind him. They were soon joined by the other members of the team, who snuggled close to the two most parental figures of the gang.
It was a good day.
Too bad things never stay that nice for the Yin side of the Balances.
