Chapter eight
"W-What are you doing here??" Avalon stammered, still looking on in absolute shock, pointing at him as if she'd just witnessed a ghost.
"I live here," Rune answered, completely unfazed.
Avalon blinked. "S-So you kidnapped me??"
Not giving Rune a chance to answer, she raised her fists, ready to beat the tar out of him for this, and started to stand when a sharp pain shot through her leg once more and she crashed to the ground with a thud and a whimper. "Ah....ow..."
"Careful," unlike his usual playful tone, he sounded concerned. "You're hurt, remember?"
Avalon only looked back at him, thoroughly confused as he knelt next to her to examine her legー which she now realized had been promptly bandaged and cleaned up, as if by a professional. She was quiet for a moment before she eyed him seriously, now trying the calm approach.
"... Why am I in your house?" Even though she was now trying to talk like two adults, there was a bite in her tone, and it almost made Rune chuckle as he sat back and met her gaze. "If you don't remember, those delinquents attacked you and you passed out after you fell."
Avalon took a mere second to process that.
"You were watching??"
So even though she'd been going a different way and SPRINTING home, he was following her?
LORD!
There was no escape from the insanity!
Completely ignoring the injury, Avalon tried to stand again, using the wall for support as she bit back a wince.
"Avalon, you'll hurt yourself," Rune advised. "Stay down."
She completely ignored him, trying to make her way to the door.
"... Avalー"
"Shut it," she grumbled. "I'm out of here, you psycho. My dad will be worried and I ー"
"I already called him."
Avalon stopped dead in her tracks and whipped around to gawk at him in disbelief. "You did what?!"
"I knew he must be worried, so I just notified him about your condition and situation to let him know you were safe..."
"What?! And he just went with it?!"
"He was very understanding."
What the hell, old man...!
Avalon was going to gut him like a fish when she went home. She went back to glaring at the calm-faced stalker who leaned casually against the wall to look at her.
"How did you even get his number??"
"I used your cellphone."
"You WHAT??"
Frantic, Avalon swatted all around her pants and pockets, but it was trueー no phone to be found. Still wearing a completely relaxed expression, Rune nonchalantly held the little blue phone out to her and she snatched it from him.
"Well! Since you felt the need to kidnap me and touch my stuff, I will be LEAVING now."
"Wait."
"What."
Rune crossed his arms, the serene expression still plastered to his face. "You really think you can walk halfway across town in that condition?"
Avalon gapped at him. "Halfway across town?? How far away are we?!"
"About twelve miles from the school."
"Ulch... So much walking..."
Avalon ran a hand through her tangled curls. This was a mess... Why'd she have to go and trip?? Now she was trapped with her worst enemy with no way out! There had to be some other way...
"... I'll walk," she declared resolutely, standing up tall. "I'll just walk home. See ya."
"Avalon."
"No, it doesn't even hurt! I can probably even run!"
"Avalon."
"I think I will run, actually, to get away from your stalker seー"
Avalon had barely even started to turn away when a strong hand gripped onto her arm, stopping her instantly. Her breath caught and she turned to see Rune just inches from her, holding her arm tightly. His face was more serious than she'd ever seen itー it almost scared her.
As she always did, Avalon clammed up, trying to clear the atmosphere with her sharp tongue.
"Wh-What are you doing? Let me gー"
"Avalon."
She blinked at him as he went on, his voice softer than silk. "... You need to at least let the swelling go down before you try to walk on it or you'll make it worse..."
Avalon was taken aback by his words. He sounded... Genuinely concerned.
Why, she wondered? Why was he worried about her? It intrigued her...
But it also irritated her.
"I'll be fine. Leave it."
She had started to try and tug her arm free when she caught a glimpse of the expression on his face and froze in place.
The look on his face in that moment.
He looked just like a kicked puppy. His eyes were so sad... Why was he so desperate?
Avalon couldn't remember a time when someone had looked at her with such concern. It left her speechless.
In the silence, Rune gently called to her again. "Please. I promise I'll let you go when you're better. I'll even walk you back myself. But for now..."
He glanced down at her leg. "I want you to be careful..."
Avalon swallowed.
What was she supposed to say to that?
