A Scholar's Guide To Beasts of Elementa
Part One:
The Dangerous and
Monstrous Dragons Of Elementa
~Fire Dragons~
Notes: Fire Dragons are extremely dangerous and should not be targeted unless in a large group. Never underestimate them. They are one of the common dragon breeds. Their skin radiated heat; the hotter they are, the hotter their skin is. They are immune to extreme heat and are slightly lava-proof. They are most commonly known for their ferocity in battle whether with human, beast, or another dragon. They are infamous for is their short tempers. Fire Dragons are incredibly strong. Only being third to Lava Dragons.
Strengths: Are at a great advantage in Pyrisa or any warm climate. Are strong and good fighters. Their fire is only equal in heat to that of a Lava Dragon's. They can breathe fire, however, there have been some reports of a Fire Dragon controlling a fire. This has led to speculation of whether Fire Dragons can breathe and control fire or just possess one of these two abilities.
Weaknesses: They can not handle the cold nor be doused or contained in water constantly. Large amounts of lava have been recorded burning even their flame and heat resistant hides.
Habitat: They commonly live near the Steppes or Lava Lands of Pyrisa. They have also been said to live in Fire Sands Desert, but are less common there due to the lack of food and water.
Description: They are muscular, making them very strong. They commonly come in oranges and reds, with yellows and golds, being less common, and black being the rarest.
Drakosarimos: Drake Chanda (Status: deceased) and Cyra Fintan (status: alive; in hiding; danger level 9 )
~Lava Dragons~
Notes: These dragons are incredibly dangerous, even more so than Fire Dragons. Though, they are less abundant and are considered a subspecies of Fire Dragons. Lava Dragons are thought to be offspring abominations of Earth Dragons and Fire Dragons. Nonetheless, they are still highly avoided for their lava-like skin, and some have the ability to spew lava. Lava Dragons are the second strongest dragons in Elementa. Never engage this dragon if you wish to live.
Strengths: Their skin burns like lava and some can spew actual, hot fresh lava from a volcano. Fire and lava have no effect on them. They have been seen spewing lava or controlling it, leading to a similar theory with the Fire Dragons.
Weaknesses: Water and ice affect them greatly. Enough can slowly turn their molten skin to rock.
Habitat: They live in or near the volcanoes of The Lava Lands of Pyrisa.
Description: They are bulky with a muscular build and volcanic rock-looking skin. They come in black to blackish-grey with veins of red, orange, or goldish-orange running through their rocky-scaly skin.
Drakosarimos: Unknown
~Earth Dragons~
Notes: Earth Dragons are the strongest of the dragon breeds, and one of the common four breeds. They are known for their burrowing and hibernation when there is a lack of food. When hibernating the largest ones can be mistaken as rocky hills or small mountains. Do not engage, even in a large group.
Strengths: They are the strongest of the dragons and can manipulate the very earth itself, making them utterly invincible on the ground.
Weaknesses: Being away from the ground or in the water. It is believed that chipping away at their rocky exterior and striking at their softer skin underneath while during hibernation is the best way to kill an Earth Dragon.
Habitat: Unsure, but most sightings are in Teirah when they are burrowing underground.
Description: They are heavily built with rocky exterior-like armor. They have small rocky bump imitations of mountains along their back that can be sharper than any sword. They come in rock and dirt colors. Earthy greens aren't unheard of.
Drakosarimos: Kaj Bhumi (Status: deceased)
~Forest Dragons~
Notes: A subspecies of the Earth Dragons, the Forest Dragons are the most docile of the dragon breeds but are still considered dangerous. Their blood looks like tree sap tinged with red. It was recently discovered that during the colder times of the year in Teirah, Forest Dragons go into hibernation when the trees do. They are thought to be offspring abominations of an Earth Dragon and a Dryad. How they are completely dragon is unknown. Their origins, like all of the other subspecies, shall remain a mystery for mankind to unravel. They have unusual control over plants.
Strengths: They are strongest around plants, especially trees. Their plant-like appearance aids them immensely in hiding among plants. Their control over plants gives them an advantage when they are around plants.
Weaknesses: They are weak in areas that are without plants and extreme heat and cold. Their docile nature is what kills them most of the time; still considered dangerous though. Their hibernation time in the winter is the best time to kill them, though their ability to hide so well makes it harder than it sounds.
Habitat: They live in the forests of Teirah.
Description: They have a plant-like appearance with a slim build that makes them easily hurt. They come in plants colors. It is said that their scales turn color with the seasons so they can match their environment.
Drakosarimos: Unknown
~Water Dragons~
Notes: Water Dragons are one of the common breeds of dragons. There are two types of Water Dragons: Freshwater Dragons and Saltwater Dragons. The two are similar to each other but they have their slight differences to tell each other apart. Freshwater Dragons tend to be smaller than their Saltwater counterparts and have thinner builds with whip-like tails and narrower snouts. Saltwater Dragons tend to be larger with wider snouts and a little bulkier to deal with the extreme pressure and cold down in the depths of the ocean with thicker tails to help with swimming and attacking/defending. Not much else is known about them. Both types have been seen spouting water from their maws and controlling, thus grouping them with all the other dragons with this mysterious and befuddling question
Strengths: They are strongest in or near water. Water can be used to their advantage due to them spouting it and possibly controlling it, like with the Fire and Lava Dragons they might just have one of these abilities. It is rumored that during certain seasons of the year, glowing lights can be seen in the ocean when it is well past sunset; it is unknown about freshwater bodies. This makes it hard to figure out if this is caused by the Water Dragons or if by another creature or monster in the sea.
Weaknesses: Extreme heat, lack of water, and damage to their gills; they are the most sensitive part of Water Dragons.
Habitat: Freshwater Dragons live in deep rivers and lakes. Saltwater Dragons live in the ocean off the coasts of Elementa.
Description: Freshwater Dragons come in murky greens and blues. Saltwater Dragons come in ocean blues, greens, and other watery colors. They have gills along the sides of their necks to help them breathe underwater. Their gills and surrounding area happen to be the toughest parts of the Water Dragons. Spikes protrude from their gills as a defense from enemies. It has been seen from anatomical reports that Water Dragons have two stomaches whereas other dragons only have one.
Drakosarimos: Arnav Airavata (status: deceased)
~Ice Dragons~
Notes: Ice Dragons are a subspecies of Water Dragons, and are said to be offspring abominations of Water Dragons and Air or Storm Dragons; most likely Air Dragons due to the rarity of Storm Dragons. Their scales are as hard as diamonds. They radiate chilling temperatures. They are not often seen. Ice Dragons are reported to be the most ruthless and can and will hold grudges. It is unknown how Ice Dragons have the mental capacity to hold a grudge. It is said that female Ice Dragons will rip apart any male dragon that is not her mate when she has eggs or young ones.
Strengths: They are strongest in freezing areas. They can control ice and snow, or breath ice, making them extremely dangerous, especially if they possess both of these abilities. One blast from an Ice Dragon's ice breath can kill you or if you are lucky, lose the limb that was hit from frostbite; no known way to stop the frostbite. Those that survive from an Ice Dragon's ice blast wish they had died.
Weaknesses: Extreme heat temperatures can melt them, or multiple blasts from a Fire or Lava Dragon. It is thought that if an Earth Dragon and Ice Dragon attack each other that the Earth Dragon could destroy the Ice Dragon by crushing it in the earth. This has yet to be proven.
Habitat: In the far north of Aeris.
Description: They are said to be made completely out of ice with jagged spines on their backs that look like icicles. They come in varying shades of ice with black-grey being the rarest color. They have serrated claws. Every point of their body is needle-sharp. Their blood is said to look like clear water.
Drakosarimos: Unknown
Side Note: Since no anatomical reports have been done on Ice Dragons everything recorded is based on speculation and encounters with these dragons.
~Air Dragons~
Notes: Air Dragons are one of the main common breeds of dragons. They can deal with high altitudes and near freezing cold temperatures. They are the fastest flying dragons in all of Elementa. Like most dragon species they can breathe streams of air, or possibly control it.
Strengths: High altitudes and flying. They are believed to be able to blow streams of air or manipulate it.
Weaknesses: Being on the ground, damaged wings, stuck underwater. Their aerodynamic bodies are not meant for extreme fighting like that of an Earth, Fire, or Lava Dragon. They are noted to use their thinner build and maneuverability to their advantage in a fight.
Habitat: They live on the tallest mountains of Aeris.
Description: They have a slender, aerodynamic build with their wings being the most muscular part. They come in light sky blues, silver, white, light greys, with darker greys not being uncommon.
Drakosarimos: Two confirmed. One male and one female. Believed to be mates. Names never found out.
~Storm Dragons~
Notes: Storm Dragons are the rarest of dragons and a subspecies of Air Dragons. Their origins remain unknown as is their current known population. They are believed to be extinct or nearly extinct.
Strengths: Storm Dragons were said to be the strongest of the dragons but this still remains to be proven true. They were said to have been able to sense an incoming storm and be able to draw power from it. They could manipulate storms and even create storms out of nothingness. Some were even able to breathe and control lightning.
Weaknesses: No known weaknesses due to lack of study.
Habitat: Unknown
Description: dark stormy colors (maybe, remains unknown)
Drakosarimos: Unknown; most likely none
Part Two:
The Races
~Humans~
Humans were the fourth and last race to be created by Amarantha the Accursed.
Humans are the dominant race in Elementa, despite not having supernatural senses and abilities like the elves; incredible building skills and hardiness like the dwarves; or a connection to the elements like the Nymphs.
Humans are one of the four races known to have magic. Human mages are distinguished by their purple eyes and can manipulate one to four of the eight elements along with using spells in an old forgotten tongue.
The humans make up four different kingdoms that symbolize one of the four original elements. Each kingdom is ruled by a Royal Family.
Pyrisa is ruled by House Aelius. Pyrisa is best known for its military strength and forging abilities.
Teirah is ruled by House Belmonte, previously by House Argyris. Teirah is best known for its amazing defenses, building skills, and prosperity fueled by the gems and ores mined.
Okeaneum is ruled by House Ceto. Okeaneum is best known for its shipbuilding and having the best navy out of the four kingdoms.
Aeris is ruled by House Taranis. Aeris is not known for much due to the lack of interaction with the other kingdoms. The only thing they are known for is being a safe harbor for magical creatures seeking refuge, which many look down upon and a disgrace to the bloody past of Elementa.
It is unknown why the other kingdoms allow such behavior from the mountainous kingdom since it is not the way of the human race. This ill behavior has caused a similar thing to happen in Okeaneum under the rule of Queen Darya Ceto. For now, it is acceptable in order to maintain peace. Hopefully, our human brothers and sisters will see the issues with their ill-fated plans and return back to the old ways.
~Dwarves~
Dwarves were the first race to be created by Amarantha the Accursed.
They are the first race to be extinct.
There is no record of them possessing any magic Amarantha the Accursed granted to the Humans and Elves.
When they were alive the Dwarves were superior in their building and forging skills, making the forging and building skills of Pyrisa and Teirah seem pathetic.
They dwindled in their race after The Great Purging, suffering from heavy losses. The Dwarves never grew over five feet and were three feet tall at the shortest.
~Elves~
Elves were the second race to be created by Amarantha the Accursed.
They are the most beautiful of the humanoid races, rivaling the nymphs for their beauty. They have slim body builds with delicate-looking features, pointed ears, and sharp canines, making them seem feline-like. They are the tallest of the races after the Nymphs, all standing over six feet tall but never over seven feet.
The Elves are well known for their inhuman strength, speed, and senses, making them a force to be reckoned with.
At one point in history, it was mentioned that elves had the ability to take on a canine or feline form. It is currently unknown if they still possess this ability.
Luckily for the Human Kingdoms, the Elves are reclusive creatures, preferring to stick to their forest home of The Death Forest after The Great Purging.
Elves had mages like the humans but is it unknown if any are left due to the lack of contact with the elves in nearly five hundred years.
The elves used to be ruled by a royal family but died out four hundred years ago. It is currently unknown who now rules the elves if anyone does. The last known queen of the elves was Queen Rynera the Resilient.
~Nymphs~
The Nymphs were the third race to be created by Amarantha the Accursed.
The Nymphs are best known for their attachment to the eight elements, surviving as long as the specific element source they are attached to. For example, Forest Nymphs will only live as long as the tree they are born to.
Nymphs have two forms: one a human form, the other symbolizing their element. They can switch between these two forms.
They are nearly as beautiful and tall as Elves and just as graceful; all nymphs stand over seven-foot-tall in their elemental form. All Nymphs can sing beautifully, luring men to them; those with strong wills can usually escape or so thought. They aren't as talented as their Siren cousins.
Fire Nymphs have been known to set villages a flame and leave all occupants to burn. It is similar to all isolated villages. Nymphs continue to be a nuisance to humans.
It is unknown how Nymphs procreate, but it is thought that they can reproduce with other humanoid races the same way due to some Nymphs being part human or elf.
Nymphs are all female with the exception of males being born through intercourse with another humanoid race.
Part Three:
Notable Monsters
~Monsters~
There are many monsters throughout Elementa. The more notable ones are:
Dragons—They consist of eight different species, each of the types representing one of the eight elements like the Nymphs. Drakosarimos are considered a subspecies of dragons. The Drakosarimos were the reason the Dragons got involved in the war five hundred years ago. As of today, the dragons are rare throughout Elementa but we still know they are here by the unexpected attacks that could only be caused by a dragon based on the destruction and carnage found.
Wyverns—Are cousins to the dragons. Unlike their dragon cousins, they spit poison instead of breathing fire. Their poison can melt through anything organic but nothing inorganic. They have a pair of clawed wings and two powerful legs. They are smaller than their cousins but make up for it in their ferocity. After The Great Purging, they disappeared like the Elves, making them nearly nonexistent. They are found throughout Elmenta but are a rare sight.
Wyverns have become rather popular in the last century for their use in crossing The Fire Sands Desert due to their larger carrying capacity. Their venom is another reason they have become so popular. When combined with certain alkaloids or fire the venom becomes rather volatile.
Gyrcons—Are the giant cousin of the gyrfalcon. Gyrcons have average wingspans of forty feet and are roughly twenty feet in length. They also have more distinctive coloring patterns compared to their smaller cousins. They weighed around five hundred pounds on average for females and two hundred and fifty pounds for males. They can carry things twice their weight.
Gyrcons used to live throughout Elementa before they migrated north.
The people of Aeris learned ways to domesticate the Gyrcons to where they used Gyrcons to traverse the high mountains and treacherous terrain of Aeris. For what better way is there to travel in the mountainous country than through the air.
(Advanced knowledge supplied by a Scholar of Aeris)
Griffins—Are an avian-cat hybrid that lives almost all over every part of Elementa save for Okeaneum. There are two breeds of Griffins that live in Elementa. The first breed is the Southern Griffin. Southern Griffins have the head and claws of an eagle and the back part is a Plain Lion. They come in tans and browns for the lion half and are white-headed. They live in Pyrisa and Teirah.
The other breed of Griffin is the Northern Griffin. Northern Griffins have the head and claws of a Northern Goshawk with the back half being a Snow Lion. They come in white and grey with grey or black spots for the leopard half and have dark heads with pale white or grey stripes.
All Griffins can be domesticated with the right training but fear is the most practical way to scare Griffins into submission. Griffins have been used to carry people and goods across The Fire Sands Desert.
Changelings—Are creatures of unknown evil that sow deceit among people. Changelings tend to possess human babies they see as an important role for them to take for their Changeling kind. Changelings can enter the mortal plane from whatever dark realm they dwell within.
Changelings appear as clouds of smoke with disembodied voices. This allows them to somehow possess infants. Changelings cannot possess children or adults. However, there have been a few scant records of Changelings possessing a child or adult.
Revenants—Revenants are restless spirits that feed on human souls. They can appear as their former human life but can take on other forms.
Revenants hate fire and sunlight. They prefer to be out in near-total darkness. It is unknown how to get rid of Revenants besides scaring them away with fire.
Those that survived an encounter with a Revenant are often cold, pale, and weak. Warming up and getting rest is the best way to recover. It has been revealed that Revenants mark those that escape them and will keep going after them till they complete what they have started; once they have a taste of a soul they will go after it forever until they get it. Avoid at all costs.
Revenants are found near places of death and sorrow.
Sprites—Are nature spirits that are related to Nymphs. They are believed to be companions to Nymphs. Sprites tend to take on varying appearances that have to do with the area they are living in and their corresponding element. It has been revealed that the temperament of a sprite reflects its habitat. If their habitat is in a poor state, Sprites take on monstrous appearances. It is vice versa if their homes are peaceful and flourishing.
Sprites have been shown to lead small children from their homes and into the night, disappearing forever. Many a parent has lost their children to these despicable creatures. Sprites have also been caught working with Nymphs to destroy isolated villages.
Sandwalkers—Are crab-like with six legs and two giant pinchers. Their beaks are hooked like and have barbed tongues that can extend ten feet out of their mouth to wrap around prey. They have long necks and scorpion-like tails that paralyze their prey; the more poison, the longer the paralysis. They can grow to be eight feet tall (four feet at the shoulder) and twenty-four feet long. They come in sandy colors.
Sandwalkers have been the main cause of caravans being destroyed while crossing The Fire Sands Deserts. It is because of this issue that many have taken to using Griffins and Wyverns to cross The Fire Sands Desert.
Giant Scorpions—Are giant scorpions and cousins to the Sandwalkers. Their venom can paralyze in small amounts and kill in large amounts. If left untreated can kill the victim. They can grow to be six feet tall and eighteen feet long. Come in dark browns and blacks. In early Pyrisan history, Giant Scorpions had been used for traversing The Fire Sands Desert.
Sea Serpents—Are serpentine-like leviathans that have gills that allow them to stay underwater. They are limbless and have rows of razor-sharp teeth and a forked tongue. They come in dark blues, greens, blacks, and rarely white. Not much more is known about them besides their extreme rarity.
In Okeaneum, the people worship two Sea Serpents that are thought to be the original Sea Serpents Amarantha the Accursed brought into the world. Their original names are unknown or the people of Okeaneum refused to divulge such knowledge.
