chapter 15
"I shouldn't have brought you with me."
With a sigh, I reached for my bag with my free hand, fumbling through the insides to look for my umbrella. I'm sure I put it here before we left.
Aeri started to cry and I rocked her a little, humming to calm her down.
"Little Aeri will be home soon. Sorry that you had to come with me," I mumbled, kissing the crown of her head.
Ah, there it is.
I took out the umbrella and placed Aeri in a more comfortable position as I headed out of the hospital entrance. The rain had just started to pour, and we should probably get home soon before it worsens. Also, I didn't want Aeri getting sick.
I was about to request the guard to help us hail a cab when a car suddenly stopped in front of us and rolled down its windows, revealing a familiar person who showed himself.
"Kyungmin!" he greeted with an eye smile and a small wave. "Do you need a ride?"
"Oh, Jimin-ah! That would be great," I told him leaning my head low, "but don't you have other things to attend to?" Well, it would be too coincidental to randomly find him here.
"I was just about to leave when I saw you," he said. "Come on, it's not good for the baby to get rained on."
Jimin took something from his dashboard and went out of his car. He approached us with an umbrella. Knowing that he was right, I stepped down on the stairs to meet him halfway. He opened the car door and made sure Aeri and I settled ourselves properly before climbing back to his seat.
Not even a minute inside, Aeri started to smash her rattle on Jimin's dashboard, and I pulled her back in a swift motion.
"No, no, Aeri. Jimin's dashboard will get scratched," I softly told her, and Jimin chuckled as he closed his door.
"So, this is little Aeri when she's awake, huh?" He tilted his head and reached for Aeri's hand, lifting them up and down. Aeri shook her rattle again and I had to face her towards Jimin to avoid her from hitting the window.
Well, her carefree ways might have rooted with Taehyung allowing her to do whatever in his car. "It's fine, we can have it fixed if she breaks it." That guy, really. He'd probably put Aeri above everything else.
"Aeri, this isn't Ta—your dad's car," I corrected myself. "Sorry about that," I quickly added to brush my previous words and pulled on the seatbelt.
"Ah, don't mind. It's fine." Jimin started to drive, a smile showing on his profile.
Aeri fell silent, and when I dropped my gaze on her, she was lurking at Jimin. I rested my head on the window, my body still facing to my left a little.
"Can you see Jimin's eyes? Jimin's eyes are missing," I playfully told Aeri. "Omo? Where could Jimin's eyes be?"
Jimin heartily chuckled and Aeri kept staring at him, eyes widening a little. Looking a little curious, Aeri turned to me.
"See? His eyes are missing. Oh no, Aeri. How could he drive when he can't see the road?"
Jimin snorted, shaking his head. "You have a daughter but you still bully me."
"Huh?" I reacted defensively. "I've always been a nice person, when did I bully you?"
"Remember when you used me as an excuse to ditch Taehyung before, and told him it's because you like me. Man, I think Taehyung almost killed me with his death glares," Jimin reminisced, making me plaster a grin.
"Of course I remember that. It was funny. I didn't think he'd be that pissed," I told him. "It was unfair. He's always busy with his girlfriend."
Jimin faked pain, placing his hand on his chest. "You used me."
"At least you were useful," I deadpanned, blinking nonchalantly with my lips on a thin line pushing back the smile about to emerge, and I heard Jimin scoff lightly. "Don't tell him that though. It's our secret."
"But look at you now, married to him," remarked Jimin. "Those jokes came true."
"Yeah. Which reminds me..." I trailed off. "Have you seen Hoseok-oppa lately?"
"Oh. Hobi-hyung? We work in the same company."
"Really? It's been so long since I saw him. Say hi to him for me?"
"Well I haven't seen you for a while now, too," Jimin reminded. "I'll tell him you said hi, and also that you're married with Taehyung now."
"Are you sure about that? You'd never hear the end of him being all sunny as he'd keep on telling you he was right all along."
"Just marry each other already, you noisy kids," was what Hoseok would always say whenever Taehyung and I would have our fair share of banters and arguments.
"Okay... I might reconsider." Jimin chuckled. "But didn't you even seriously take it when people linked you with Taehyung before?"
"Hmm? I kind of liked it when people teased us," I simply admitted. "I mean, I had always been comfortable with Taehyung. Sometimes, I just thought he deserves better. I had been the troublemaker back then, while he was the straight A student."
"But come to think of it, those girls he dated back then weren't better than me at all." I crinkled my nose.
"Well, you changed a lot," said Jimin. "You're a responsible mom now, Kyungmin."
"Yeah, and I actually think the tables have turned because Taehyung's the more stubborn one now."
"So..." Jimin's tone changed a little, and I got a hint of the shift. "How's everything lately?"
"Much better," I assured him.
"Are you still seeing Dr. Hijung? If you don't mind me asking, that is."
"It's fine. Yeah, I do. But I don't have fixed appointments anymore. I just drop by once in a while. To talk... and just to make sure."
"I see."
"Also since Aeri's with me now, it's all going good. Much more since I got her custody recently."
"That's great to hear," Jimin honestly said, no other meaning to his words. "Wait, what do you mean custody?"
Jimin threw me a quick look, forehead creasing. That was when it occurred to me that I actually hadn't told him about Aeri.
"Oh, well, that..." I scratched the tip of my nose, and hugged Aeri tighter, but not so much as to not make her uncomfortable. "She's not really my biological daughter. I adopted her after my good friend passed away."
"But please don't tell her that in the future, I'll be the one to tell her," I added.
"I won't. One condition." I felt nervous as he said those words quickly.
But then, my insides relaxed when Jimin continued.
"I'll be uncle Jimin."
I smiled, mentally shaking my head for overthinking again.
"Sure. But make sure you buy her presents for her birthday," I joked, and Jimin laughed with me.
I trusted Jimin, I guess? But when it came to my status with Taehyung, it would be best if only Somi and Namjoon knew about our agreement. Besides, there was no reason to let him know.
"We've been driving for a couple of minutes but I have no idea where to drop you off," Jimin suddenly mentioned. "But now that the rain had stopped, does cake sound good?"
The cute expectant look on his face was something I couldn't reject right now. Besides, I had nothing better to do for today anyway.
I nodded. "Sure. Sounds good."
