Chapter 14 ~ Another Prediction
"Broaden your minds, you must look beyond. The art of crystal gazing is in the clearing of the Inner Eye! Only then can you see! Try again, my dear."
I was so ready to leave Divination. I didn't get much sleep after me and Harry returned to our dormitories when we were caught roaming around the castle as we were trying to look for Peter Pettigrew. Harry had his head down on the table, looking into the ball filled with fog, Hermione was actually trying to focus on making a prediction, and Ron, of course, was snoring beside me.
That stupid map was all I could think of. Was it lying about Peter being in the castle, going past us, and being alive? After all, everyone thought that Sirius Black killed him.
"Now, what do we have here?" I heard Trelawney say as Harry kicked me from under the table and did the same to Ron as well. We both shot up, sitting up straight and looked at her as she came to us.
"Do you mind me trying?" Hermione asked enthusiastically. Professor Trelawney smiled at her. Hermione took a deep breath, then answered. "The Grim. Possibly."
Oh, no, not the Grim again. Professor Trelawney had called me out in front of her class twice already. The first time was with the whole thing about Malfoy and I and how we were destined to be together, and the second time was with the Grim. The Grim was just a black dog that symbolized death so people said and it freaked everyone out every time someone mentioned it. She called out Harry about it as well.
Of course, out of all the people that got the Grim in our tea cups, we were the lucky ones to get it. Now people gave us strange looks in the hallways. Well, before that, people already gave us strange looks in the hallways. Not surprising, really. People thought we didn't have a problem with it, but they were wrong. Well, actually, Harry said he didn't, but I knew he did. But I was a whole different story.
So back to Divination class. Professor Trelawney looked at her and took her hand. She opened it, so she could see her palm. "My dear, from the first moment you stepped foot in my class, I sensed that you did not possess the proper spirit for the noble art of Divination. No, you see there? You are young in years but the heart that beats beneath your bosom is as shriveled as an old maid's, your soul as dry as the pages of the books to which you so desperately cleave." She closed Hermione's hand and looked back at her in pity.
Hermione pulled her hand away and stood up. She knocked over the crystal ball, picked up her bag, and left the classroom. Everyone else was murmuring as she left. The three of us were just sitting there, shocked at what Hermione just did. She would never leave a class early like that. But I couldn't believe that Trelawney actually said that about her.
"Have I said something?" she asked, looking at the three of us, confused.
She left our table, going to the next group, leaving us just sitting there with nothing to do since our crystal ball just rolled away, thanks to Hermione.
"Guess she couldn't handle the truth," Malfoy said, which made all of his Slytherin buddies bust out laughing. "Maybe she should say something about Potter, Potterette, and Weasley next." He smirked, then raised his eyebrows. "Oh, Potterette. I like that. Such a shame I didn't think of it sooner."
"I swear, if he says something about me, I'll go over there and punch the shit out of him," I whispered to Harry and Ron in anger.
"I'll hold him down while you do it," Ron replied.
We couldn't help but laugh at his comment. But he was being serious when he said it. But still, it was funny.
"Let's start with Weasley, shall we? His family all share one bed, because they're broke, unlike my family. You can tell his robes aren't even new. They're hand-me-downs, obviously. And he probably has a crush on someone who doesn't feel the same way. So sad, Weasley. It really is."
His friends roared with laughter again. Ron didn't say anything. He didn't even turn around. He just sat there, clenching his fists together. They were turning white as snow.
But I knew he wasn't done yet. "Now, it's Potter's turn. The famous Harry Potter. Thinks he's so special, because he survived one of the darkest wizards of all time. And that scar on his head means nothing, either."
"Shut up, Malfoy," Harry said.
"Oooh, that wasn't very friendly. Didn't your parents teach you manners? Oh, wait, they didn't." The Slytherins laughed again. We looked at Harry and just shook our heads and he knew not to do anything. "And last but not least, Maxine Potter. Harry Potter's twin. She's nothing special, either. I know it, she knows it, and my father knows it, too."
He did not just say that. He knew no one else was supposed to know about me living with him. If he opened his mouth again, I was about to go over there and hex him. Dumbledore would surely get on him about it as well. I didn't say anything, trying to act like I didn't care, but deep down, of course I gave a shit about what Malfoy said. Especially if he was talking about me.
"Nobody likes her, anyway. Who would like her? She obviously has no looks, no style, nothing!" Malfoy and his friends roared with laughter again.
I couldn't take it anymore, so I decided to turn around and said something to him. "At least I have some class, unlike you and your Slytherin buddies, who are immature and bring others down, because you guys have no life. So shut it, Malfoy, before I hex the shit out of you."
Class was finally dismissed and everyone jumped out of their seats and headed for the door. The three of us stood up and left the classroom. However, I was stopped by Malfoy. He pulled me by the arm and gripped it tightly.
"Try that shit again and you'll be sorry you even said anything," he growled.
"Same goes for you. You and I both know that no one is supposed to know about me living with you. So I suggest you keep your mouth shut next time," I snapped, pulling my arm away. I gave him a glare and left the classroom. Luckily, Harry and Ron were waiting for me when they found out I wasn't with them anymore.
We were walking down the spiral steps, talking about Hermione. Well, actually, Ron was talking about Hermione and we were listening to him.
"She's gone mental, Hermione has. I mean, not that she wasn't always mental, but now it's out in the open for everyone to see!" Ron told us.
But Harry was distracted by something else. "Hang on." He saw the crystal ball that Hermione knocked over and picked it up. "We better take this back," he said.
Ron looked at him like he was crazy. "I'm not going back."
Harry exhaled at Ron and then looked at me. "Fine. Max?"
"Sure," I replied.
We both looked at Ron. "See you later, Ron."
"See you," he replied.
We walked back up the steps, going around everyone who was coming down. It was a long walk, but during that time, Harry brought up Malfoy and what he did in class just then.
"He had no right to even say that stuff about me. And he also knew that no one was supposed to know about me living with him. By the way, when are we gonna tell the others about that?" I said.
"I don't know, really. Whenever Dumbledore thinks it's the right time to tell them, I guess. We have to trust him, you know."
"I know. But how can Dumbledore trust Lucius Malfoy? He's a vile and cruel person. He beats me for crying out loud!"
Harry stopped and turned around to face me. "Look, we will get you out of that house, Max. I'll make sure of it."
I nodded. "Okay."
We finally made it back to the classroom. Professor Trelawney wasn't in there, it looked like. So we walked to her desk and placed the ball there. Just as we were about to leave, we saw something appear in the crystal ball. It wasn't fog, but it was a face instead. Neither of us had the faintest idea on who it was. But it started to whisper something. It sounded like our names.
"Harry Potter...Maxine Potter..."
We didn't do anything. We just stood there, watching the face disappear. Suddenly, we both felt a hand slam on our shoulders, which made us startle a little. It was Professor Trelawney and it sounded like she was wheezing.
"Professor Trelawney--" Harry started.
"He will return tonight," she said in a demonic voice. It also sounded like she lost her voice.
"Sorry?" Harry asked.
"Tonight, he who betrayed his friends, whose heart rots with murder shall break free. Innocent blood shall be spilt and servant and master shall be reunited once moreeeeeeee!" She started coughing and clearing her throat as if something was in her throat. Or as if someone, or something, was controlling her. She looked at us a little confused and shocked. "Oh! I'm so sorry, did you two say something?"
Harry, who was a little freaked out, replied. "No." We both started walking towards the door, not taking our eyes off of her.
"Nothing," I spoke up.
We started walking fast towards the door and turned around one last time to see if she was still looking at us. She was, but she looked completely confused at what just happened.
Did she even know what she just said a minute ago?
By the time we got to the door, we ran.
