Roanoke Island

November 05, 19:46 EDT

Klarion walked with Teekl in his arms, Scarlet Witch trailing behind them. They came to a literal crossroads and Klarion looked to Teekl. "How about here?" Teekl meowed and Klarion placed him down. "Finally." He pulled out a glowing amber gem from inside his suit jacket, holding it up to admire it. Klarion placed the gem on the ground in the center of the cross road, raising his hands and summoning his magic. 

A glowing pattern appeared on the ground beneath the gem, spreading outwards to create a circle around the gem. Klarion backed up to the edge of the circle, motioning Scarlet Witch to one of the smaller circles that glowed at the edge of the main circle. Klarion's eyes lit up. "Time to get the old band together. Wotan. Black Briar Thorn. Felix Faust. Wizard." As he said their names, they appeared in their own circles. Klarion rubbed his hands together, chuckling. "Now, heheh, let's put on a show."

The group began to chant an incantation, focusing their combined magic on the gem. 

Mount Justice 

November 05, 19:47  EDT

Wally, Kaldur, Pietro, and Robin were gathered in their street clothes along with Zatara, Red Tornado, and Batman at the base of the bioship, watching as M'gann and Conner unloaded the supplies. 

"Did you get everything?" Batman asked.

"Everything on your list, Batman. Plus groceries." M'gann supplied an answer, using her telekinesis to carry the groceries from the bioship. 

Wally and Pietro immediately ran over to the groceries. "Cookie fixins?" 

"Snickerdoodles."

"You better not eat them all this time, Wally. You don't even live here." Pietro grumbled, snatching one of the packages from the red head's hands. He looked up when the elevator opened, his heart skipping when he saw Zatanna step out with Artemis. Speeding up to them, he offered them each a cookie, which they accepted. "So, uh, seeing as you're back, Zatanna...does that mean you're joining the team?"

"I don't know. Zatara's so overprotective, just getting him to let me visit takes a full days wheedling." Zatanna sighed, taking a bite of the cookie. "I just wish he'd give me a little space."

Without warning, the three Leaguers disappeared into thin air. 

"Woah, what just happened?" Wally asked, looking at the space where the adults had just been. 

"I don't know, but I'm getting a sense of powerful magic being at play here." Zatanna looked at the team, shaken at seeing her dad disappear before her eyes. 

"Alright. Robin and Zatanna, you two stay here and try and figure out what has occurred while everyone else is with me. We need to see if this has happened to the rest of the League or if it was a targeted attack." Kaldur commanded. 

Pietro nodded, turning to go to his room but stopping when he felt a hand on his arm. Looking at the source, he was surprised to see Zatanna giving him a shy look. "Hey. Be careful out there, alright?"

Pietro smiled at her. "I will be. Thank you for your concern."

Running off to his room, he changed his sneakers to his reinforced ones from his uniform before meeting the rest of the team in the main cavern, getting his assignment. Departing from the mountain, Pietro ran around for awhile but came to the same conclusion as everyone else when he couldn't find any of the heroes over the age of eighteen. Or any adults for that matter. 

"-set up a refugee center at the high school gym." Wally's voice came through the com. "Any luck with-"

"No. Can't raise the Batcave, Hall of Justice, or the Watch- or any adult hero, even Red Arrow." Came Robin's reply. 

"I guess we're on our own. Kid Flash out." 

Pietro was at the gym with Artemis, trying to keep the children entertained. He watched as Artemis sang nursery rhymes to the younger ones, laughing under his breathe before he turned back to the older kids. "Alright, who wants to play 'What time is it Mister Fox?'" A chorus of 'me's' sounded out and Pietro laughed. "Okay, okay..."

Pietro looked up as Conner, M'gann, and Wally walked in with more kids, conversing with Artemis for a few minutes while he played the game with the children. He saw them gesture for him to follow, so he bid farewell to the children, laughing when they all whined and pouted. "I may be back, so don't fret."

Following his friends back to the mountain, Pietro stood off to the side as Kaldur discussed with Robin and Wally his plan to create a message for the children world wide using the three of them, seeing as they were the public heroes. So while they were filming the message, Pietro walked over to Zatanna, who looked deep in thought. "Everything alright, Zatanna?"

"Hmm? Yeah, just concentrating on trying to learn this spell." She mumbled. "I'm a bit nervous, I don't want to make things worse..."

"You'll do great, I'm sure of it." Pietro smiled at her. "Have some faith in yourself and your abilities. I do."

"Thanks, Pietro. That's really sweet." She grinned back. They stared at each other for a moment before she cleared her throat, looking away with a slight blush on her cheek. "I should, uh, practice the spell."

"Yeah, um, I'll be here." Pietro watched her walk away, turning when he heard a snort to see Wally watching him. "What do you want, West?"

"You two are so obvious." Wally chuckled. 

"Like you and Artemis?" Pietro shot back. 

"W-what?! There is nothing there!" Wally denied, stalking out of the room. 

A few minutes later, Zatanna returned with Wally and Kaldur, saying she was ready to try the locator spell. Robin pulled up the holographic map. Zatanna took a deep breath before speaking backwards, a wand aimed at the holographic map. 

"Coordinates locked. Roanoke Island." Robin delcared.

"You did it." Pietro smiled at her. 

"Now we formulate a plan of attack." Wally slammed his fist into his open palm.

"Uh, what are we attacking? We don't know who the enemy is." Pietro pointed out. 

"Shazam!" A crack of lightning lit up the cave and suddenly a ten year old boy was standing there. "It works!" 

"Where did you come from? Who are you?" Kaldur asked as everyone approached him.

"Quick. Read my mind." The boy said. 

"He's Captain Marvel." M'gann gasped.

"Yeah, and I'm Speedy Gonzalez." Wally scoffed. "Look, just because he believes he's Cap-"

"Gee, Wally, do I really have to bring you nachos and pineapple juice to get on your good side?" The kid smirked. 

The team stared wide eyed at the child, Pietro bursting out laughing. "This is amazing. Captain Marvel, who is on par with Superman, is a child."

"Never mind that now, where did you come from? How are you a child?" Artemis asked. 

"There are two worlds, one for adults and one for kids. Since Cap is an adult and I am a child, when I shift between forms, I can travel between worlds." Captain Marvel explained. 

"Then we can communicate with the Justice League through you." Kaldur deduced. 

So that is what the team did, coming up with a coordinated attack to pull off against the unknown enemies on Roanoke Island. 

Roanoke Island

Scarlet Witch and Klarion the Witch Boy stood in their circles, still chanting their incantation when the team and Zatanna came upon them, hiding in the surrounding forest to come up with  plan of attack. 

Robin and Artemis were the first wave, firing projectiles at the two magic users. Scarlet Witch simply threw up a force field, blocking the arrows and bird-a-rangs that came flying in their direction. Klarion turned to look at the two team members with a sinister look. "That's the best you can do?" Lifting his hand up and aiming it at the two teens, he fired off a bolt of magical lightning, hitting both of them and knocking them out. 

Kid Flash, Superboy, Aqualad, and Quicksilver all ran at the magical duo from different directions with determination, ready to strike them down only to be thrown back by hex blasts from Scarlet Witch. Zatanna jumped into the fray, aiming her hands in the direction of the Witch and the Witch Boy as she yelled out a backwards spell. Klarion put up a forcefield, which Zatanna barely damaged. He scoffed. "Huh. Baby magic." 

Scarlet Witch's eyes glowed as she tossed the young magician through the air, Quicksilver running to catch Zatanna. "I've got you, Zee."

"Thanks." She smiled at the silver haired teen. 

Scarlet Witch turned away from the duo when she felt a vibration course through the forcefield, seeing Miss Martian tossing rocks at it. She went to attack the green teen when Klarion beat her to it, blowing fire out of his mouth at Miss Martian. 

Listen, when Fate possessed my body he defeated Klarion by attacking the cat. 

Good. Not that big of a cat fan, anyway. 

Artemis fired an arrow at Teekl but as soon as it got close to the familiar it changed to a ball of yarn, thanks to Klarion interfering. Klarion chuckled. "Show them what the familiar to a Lord of Chaos can do, Teekl."

Teekl transformed from a small tabby cat into a grotesque sabretooth tiger like creature. Teekl then went after Superboy, slamming him out of the air when the Kryptonian attacked the feline. 

Quicksilver looked to his sister as she defended the gem and Klarion from his teammate's attacks, narrowing his eyes. He was about to call out to his sister mentally when Billy Batson appeared next to him. "It's the-"

Quicksilver slammed a hand over the kid's mouth. 

Don't shout Billy. Miss Martian has linked you telepathically with the rest of us. 

Billy nodded in understanding. 

That's so cool. I mean, it's the gem at the center of the pentagram. Destroy it and we win. 

That's all I needed to know. 

Quicksilver looked over and saw Zatanna reaching for the Helmet of Fate. His eyes widened, remembering what Kaldur and Wally said about those who put on the Helmet. 

Sestra, I need your help!

With what?

Zatanna, she is about to sacrifice her freedom and her whole life just to defeat you and Klarion. 

I can't, the Light will never forgive me-

Please, you can make it look like an accident. 

I... okay. Run at me. Now.

Quicksilver sped full speed at his sister, watching as she turned her efforts to him. Scarlet Witch released her hex powers in multiple directions at once. One blast knocked the Helmet out of Zatanna's hands, another pushed Quicksilver and the rest of the team away from her and Klarion, and the third, the strongest blast,  hit the amber gem in the middle and cracked it. 

Klarion turned to Scarlet Witch as the worlds wavered and merged for a second, hissing at her. "Careful, you dimwit!" 

Scarlet Witch gave him a nervous grin in return, shrugging. "Oops?"

As Klarion was glaring at Scarlet Witch and not focusing on the forcefield, the team was able o break it down and Quicksilver ran through, grabbing the gem. His eyes widened when he saw he slipping the Helmet of Fate on her head, despite his sister's intervention. "Zatanna, no!" He was too late, watching as she transformed into Doctor Fate. Sighing in defeat, he tossed the gem to her. "Catch, Doctor!"

Tossing the gem to the young magician, Zatanna-as-Fate  caught it and spoke an incantation at the same time her father did in the adult world, merging the universes back into one. Klarion glared at the other sorcerers before shrugging. "Boy, they sure don't make evil sorcerers like they used to. I was hopeful with you, Scarlet Witch, but you proved disappointing." He snapped his fingers and Teekl came running to him, transforming back into a cat as he ran. A portal appeared next to Klarion. "See you later, armadillos. Unless I see you first!" 

He jumped through the portal, leaving Scarlet Witch and the rest of the magic users behind with the Justice League and the team. Scarlet Witch turned to see the team and the League approaching her and the other sorcerers, who were close to unconsciousness on the ground. She gulped, backing up. Scarlet Witch felt someone behind her and looked, seeing Robin standing there with his arms crossed over his chest. "Going somewhere?"

Scarlet Witch paused, thinking her options over before smirking. "What if I told you that this whole splitting the world ordeal was just the distraction?"

"For what?" Robin asked, reaching for her arm. 

Scarlet Witch winked. "Where's the fun in telling you, cutie?"

Sestra...

What? 

Go before I need to capture you.

Alright, alright. I'm sorry about your friend, I tried to stop her, I really did.

I know. Thank you for the effort.

Scarlet Witch snapped her fingers and disappeared in a haze of red, leaving behind the four adult sorcerers and the heroes. Quicksilver turned to watch with the rest of his team as Zatara approached his possessed daughter.

"Fate! Great Nabu, release my daughter!" Zatara called up to the hovering teen.

"No." Quicksilver felt his stomach drop as Zatara stared at his daughter. "Hear what the Helmet wants in these hours. The world needs Doctor Fate and the girl's natural affinity for the mystic arts makes her the perfect candidate."

"You can't do that!" Artemis yelled.

"She has her own life to live!" Quicksilver added.

"Kent would never allow -"

Fate cut Kid Flash off. "Kent did object strenuously, so I released his spirit to the afterlife. He is gone."

Everyone exchanged a look, unsure of what to do until Zatara stepped forward. "Take me instead. My skills are already at their peak.  My body is physically stronger, better able to withstand the strain of your power."

"All true. But if I remove the Helmet, what guarantee have I that you will don it?" Fate asked.

"My word." Zatara then spoke a backwards incantation.

Fate lowered down before Zatara and removed the Helmet, revealing Zatanna. "Dad!"

"Zatanna!" They hugged for a minute before breaking apart, Zatara taking the Helmet from his daughter. He kissed her forehead. "Remember...I love you." Zatara turned to the team and the gathering of Justice Leaguers. "Take care of my girl."

"You have my word." Batman said solemnly. 

"No, please! This was my fault!" Quicksilver came up to comfort Zatanna but she brushed him off, going towards her dad as he lifted the Helmet over his head and placed it down. "Dad, don't! Dad!"

Zatara was transformed into Doctor Fate, ignoring his daughter's outstretched hand. He turned to the chained sorcerers, lifting them in the air. "Leave these to the Fate." Doctor Fate disappeared with the sorcerers, leaving behind a devastated Zatanna. 

She collapsed to the ground, Quicksilver and Artemis at her side immediately as everyone looked on in pity. 

Mount Justice

Pietro, Artemis, M'gann, and Robin were helping Zatanna carry her boxes into her new room at the mountain, setting them down for her to unpack. 

"And my room's right next door if you need anything." M'gann said, turning to the ebony haired teen. 

"Thanks, I, uh, could use a little alone time, okay?" Zatanna spoke in a far off voice, staring at the boxes in front of her. 

"Of course." Artemis nodded, her, M'gann, and Robin exiting the room right away.

Pietro hesitated in the doorway, turning to look over his shoulder at Zatanna. He frowned slightly before exiting the room, leaving Zatanna to cry over the loss of her father. 

I usually do my author notes at the beginning of the chapter but I didn't want to potentially spoil anything ((even though this went basically exactly how the episode did, lmao))

Anyways, I was wondering if I should do a chapter between this episode and the next ((Coldhearted)) and have it focused on Wanda and the ramifications she may face due to her actions? Oui or non?
