Chapter 5 - Social Feeding Time
My groggy mind is still in a state of shock, reeling at the fact I've slept the morning away and now my nephew's football match is in less than an hour. Even if I high-tailed out of the apartment right now, the train and bus probably wouldn't get me there in time. A taxi is an option, but I don't even want to contemplate my account balance after how many drinks I guzzled last night. The thought of Justin's sad little face as he scans the crowd asking why his Aunty didn't show breaks my heart. Ugh, I need my phone.
"Kyra?" Jay prompts after a moment, concern etched in his handsome features.
"I'm OK, I just realised I have somewhere to be, but I'll never make it in time... Ugh, Justin's going to be so disappointed." Jay's hand immediately drops from my back.
"Justin? Is he your boyfriend?" I swiftly shake my head but then hate myself for the sudden movement. Goodness, I need painkillers and bacon.
"No, my nephew. Today is his first footy game, and he's beyond excited. I promised him last week that I'd cheer him on."
"Where's the match?"
"Steel Blue Oval."
"But that's only a 20-minute drive away. When does the game start?"
Internally I sigh; it's not so simple for someone solely-dependant on public transport. The train lines are a joke considering Perth's urban sprawl. Just as I'm about to explain, Elsie scurries back into the room, positively beaming as she brandishes her mobile phone.
"Oh my god, Kyra! You have to see Emberz FB page!" She bounds up to the island bench and shoves the device in front of me. I stare at the image displayed on the screen with raised eyebrows.
I remember posing for it, vaguely. We're standing on either side of Aiden as his arms wrap around our waists. The three of us are positively beaming at the camera. Damn, thanks to Elsie's wardrobes and makeup skills, I scrub up well.
"Wow, that's awesome!" Truthfully, it is an honour that the nightclub made us their cover photo. Yet, at the same time, a little voice in my head is surprised they didn't ask our permission to use the photo. Though perhaps I did sign a waiver last night. Goodness knows I was drunk enough — nothing would surprise me at this stage.
"It's so exciting we're literally the face of the club! I still can't believe it!" Elsie squeals while showing her phone to Jay. I hardly register his sweet compliments as my mind wanders back to Justin.
I could ask my sister-in-law Beth to pick me up, but she's still annoyed over my late appearance at Justin's birthday party last month. It didn't help that I forgot to bring a plate of food too. Juggling his present on the bus was hard enough, let alone a platter of sandwiches. Everyone seems to forget how hard it is to get around this city without your own wheels.
"I'm so tagging you in this Kyra." Before I can comment, the sound of a notification on my phone echoes through the apartments thin walls. "So, are you guys hungry? I'm starving! Oh, I know we could go to General Zhao's for Dim Sim." Elsie prattles on as she plays with her phone. My stomach churns at the idea. Hard pass on the Dim Sum.
"I'll have to take a raincheck on that. Sorry, but I really need to get going. I didn't realise it was so late." Elsie raises an eyebrow when a wave of pain makes me clutch my head again as what feels like steak knives carve behind my eyes. I'm never drinking again!
"Her nephew's football game starts soon," Jay explains while I cringe in pain.
"Well, why didn't you say so earlier. I can take you." Elsie's kind offer takes me completely by surprise. I had figured she'd be adamant about getting some food since she claimed she was starving. Plus, shouldn't she want to spend the afternoon with Jay, not drive my sorry ass around town.
"But Bassendean is completely out of your way..." Elsie shrugs her shoulders.
"Gives me a great excuse to check out the new shopping centre at the airport since I'll be almost there." Just as Elsie describes the mall in great detail, Jay interjects.
"Shopping is my queue to leave. I'll call you soon, Elle. It was... nice meeting you, Kyra." Despite feeling like death warmed up, his words and cocky smile bring a blush to my cheeks. Nice, our kiss was more than nice.
"Yeah, see you around, Jay." I manage to squeak out as he leans in and kisses Elsie's cheek. My gaze averts to the floor as a strong feeling of jealousy ensnares me. Unfortunately, my newfound feelings are entirely unreasonable, and I'm faced with the unhappy fact that I don't know when I'll ever see him again. Ugh, green is definitely not my colour.
After Jay takes his leave, Elsie insists I wear some of her clothes instead of my dirty work clothes from yesterday. I'm only too happy to comply, previously dreading the idea of business attire to an outdoor sports game. I would have melted in this heat for sure.
After throwing on one of Elsie's summer dresses and taming my hair as quickly as possible, we take the elevator down to the basement garage. It's kind of awesome Elsie's apartment comes with her own car bay, but I wasn't prepared for the slick convertible she sidles up to.
"Is that your car?" I gape at the fire-engine red sports car, feeling a fresh wave of envy.
"I wish, but no, it's my Dad's. He's going through another nasty divorce, so he's hidden a few of his assets in my name, makes it harder to take him to the cleaners." I restrain the deep urge to roll my eyes. Though it does explain the car, the convertible practically screams mid-life crisis.
"Don't know why he even bothers. Every marriage turns out the same way." I quietly ponder her words as she starts the car; the engine rumbles loudly, hurting my already tender head. It's no wonder where Elsie gets her fear of commitment from then.
Emerging out of the garage into the excessively bright sunlight, I want to cringe away even with my shades. The day may be overcast, but it's muggy, and I'm even more grateful for Elsie's choice of a summer dress as my back sticks to the black leather seats.
The city streets bustle with Saturday shoppers that it feels like forever before we exit the CBD and start heading North-East.
"Thanks again for driving me. Though I feel awful for interrupting your plans with Jay." Elsie laughs out loud, and I snap my head over and instantly regret the quick motion. Having downed two aspirin before we left Elsie's apartment, all I can hope is they do their job before we get to the game.
"What plans with Jay?"
"You know, General Zhao's..." Surely I didn't imagine all that in my grogginess.
"Oh, that... Don't worry; there were no real plans. To be honest, Jay isn't even a fan of Chinese food. Crazy right, but that was my subtle attempt at getting rid of him."
"What? You were trying to get rid of him?" Why on earth? I'm seriously beginning to question her sanity.
"Yeah, well, normally it's not a problem after a night together as Jay goes to the gym every morning. But for some reason, he skipped the gym and stuck around today." I tilt my head curiously at her profile as she stares ahead at the road. But why? I'd be trying to convince him to stay... and never leave.
Biting my tongue, I rummage in my handbag for my phone to check the time. My eyes widen as I glimpse the screen, 4:10. Navigating the City centre has taken longer than expected, but with any luck, we should just make it. Even so, this is certainly quicker than the train. Noticing the message and messenger icons, I unlock my phone to investigate; perhaps it's Beth checking up if I'm coming. My fingers freeze and my eyes bulge as I swipe down to reveal my notifications, "What the hell?"
"What's wrong?" Elsie asks but keeps her eyes thankfully on the traffic ahead.
"I think my account got hacked; I have 78 friend requests, no 79! And more notifications then I know what to do with..."
"No, That'll be because of Embrz. I tagged you in their post, remember? So now everyone wants to know us. My profile's going off too!" Elsie seems over the moon at the prospect while my stomach ripples with a sudden wave of panic. Or is that just queasiness? Hmm, best not hurl in Elsie's Dad's fancy car.
"Oh... Great." It doesn't sound exciting, only my version of a living nightmare. Why would anyone want to be famous? The peace of being a no one appeals a lot more to me. I begin reading some of the comments on our picture, but it doesn't make me feel any better, more like a piece of meat, really. "Seems we have some fans."
"Isn't it awesome! Hopefully, we'll stay on the VIP list forever now. I mean, we are the face of the club after all! We should go back next weekend and have more mojitos." I murmur my assent half-heartedly; in truth, the thought of alcohol at the moment has me turning a pale shade of green. Hopefully, I won't have to duck off to the restroom during Justin's game.
As Elsie pulls up at the sporting venue, I hastily unbuckle my seatbelt. "Sure you don't want to watch an under tens football game?" My brother won't be there as he's working away this week, but I'm sort of curious to see if Beth or Justin can tell us apart.
"Hmm. Tempting, but I'd much rather go shopping..." I don't exactly blame her for feeling that way, and we both laugh. She draws me into a swift hug which I happily reciprocate.
"Thank you again for an awesome night and the lift. Talk to you soon?"
"You know it! How about we grab a coffee before work sometime this week."
"Sounds great! Just let me know when," I chirp in agreement before piling out of the car and instantly miss the air conditioner.
"Bye, Kyra!" Elsie revs the engine before speeding off into the blazing hot afternoon sun. Heading into the venue, I pick my way through the crowd and manage to spot Beth. The game is just about to start. I made it. Perhaps I won't get the worst Aunty in world award after all.
