E-shoplifting?
Here's another shameful confession. And I'm not sure if you'll think of me the same way again.
I shop at Amazon often. Recently I ordered 3 bags of my favorite ground coffee (Lavazza crema e gusto). It was supposed to be a good bargain, until I received the items. The bags were supposed to be sealed and airtight. They were not! I received 4 bags instead of 3, but the extra bag was cut open, the ground coffee was spilling all over the package. And of course, because it wasn't airtight, the coffee did not smell fresh. It was weak, old, and stale.
So of course I had to return it, but I did something stupid. I thought I'd open one of the closed bags to try it. Hoping it didn't taste so bad. And it wasn't that bad.
Then I realized I couldn't return the bag after opening it, but guess what? The order said it was 3 bags and I received 4. So I returned the other 3 bags, and kept the one I opened.
I decided to use the opened bag until I get refunded and order new ones. I guess I wasn't thinking, or maybe in the moment I felt entitled to do so, because they made the mistake and I felt I should be compensated somehow.
I did use that coffee a few times, and I felt awful for doing so. The nagging guilt emerged again. But the damage was already done. I was a thief!
I got the refund on my Amazon account and got fresh, new coffee grounds, but I still feel bad I used that coffee.
Just wondering what would you guys call that situation? I still have it in my fridge and my thought to relieve my conscience is to throw it in the trash. Not that it will change anything. But I can't undo what is already done.
Yours truly,
the king of thieves,
MB
