EPILOGUE: So Begins The End
In many ways Irene had never imagined herself in this position. For the longest time getting married had never been in her life plan. All that had ever mattered before was her career. And although that was still one of her priorities it was like now there were so many other possibilities.
Now she was standing outside of the barn on the Kent Farm watching as Kara and Cat slowly stepped into the barn. They were her only two bridesmaids and that meant that at any second it would be her turn to step inside.
Irene and Clark had stayed true to keeping the wedding simple and small. They didn't need anything else, and considering that they had pulled everything together in a week she felt as if it was perfect. The simplicity of it was perfect for them, and all they needed was the people that were essential to their lives.
Inside the barn she expected only their coworkers from the Daily Planet and all the members of the Justice League. Though no one from the Daily Planet would have any idea that they were under the same roof as the superheroes that saved the world.
"Estas nerviosa mi nina?" Her mother asked a look of genuine concern in her face. Although her mother practically adored Clark, Irene knew that she would support whatever decision she made.
Irene nodded as she tighten her grip on the bouquet in her hands. She wasn't nervous about marrying Clark. Because in a world of so much uncertainty the one thing that was clear was that she wanted to marry him.
Irene could only assume that her nerves were being driven by fear. The fear that something would happen and ruin everything.
"You aren't having doubts are you?" She continued to question after not getting a proper response from her daughter.
"Of course not." Irene said quickly knowing that there wasn't anything that could keep her from marrying Clark Kent. "I'm just worried I might trip going down the aisle."
Her mom chuckled softly as she reached forward adjusting one of the curls that was framing Irene's face. "Mensa."
Before Irene could say another word her mom was taking her arm and they were stepping inside the barn. It felt that he heart was about to leap out of her chest as they began walking, she couldn't even look to the side to see who had actually decided to attend their wedding at such short notice. Suddenly the joke she had told her mother about tripping felt incredibly real.
But her uneasiness seemed to melt away when she met Clark's eyes. There were tears in his eyes as he looked at her and in that moment Irene knew just how right Clark had been all those months ago when he had brought her here and told her how it should have been impossible for them to have found each other. But here they were against all odds and it there was no other explanation to it other than fate.
Irene looked away from Clark for a moment to look at Angel and Jimmy who were standing behind Clark as his grooms men. She was surprised to find that there were tears in both of their eyes too.
The ceremony slipped by much too quickly because before she knew it the time for them to say their vows had come. Irene had spent hours writing her's and even now she felt that they weren't finished. Because there really weren't enough hours of the day to put into words everything she felt.
Irene looked down at Clark's hands surprised to find that they were shaking. She found it odd considering that Clark didn't tend to be nervous, and he was no stranger to grand declarations of love. In all honesty she didn't know what else there was for him to say. He had told her he loved her in the most beautiful ways in the past and she didn't know how he could possibly say anything else.
"Irene, everyone here can attest to the way you have the ability to change someone's life. It is a privilege to be able to say that you have changed mine. Irene you are the sun." Clark began before he paused and Irene could see how much he was struggling to keep his tears at bay. He had never been one to hide his emotions, but with all their loved ones watching it wasn't that simple. "You hold the universe together just by existing. There isn't a day of my existence that I won't love you, and I promise to love and adore you each day like it is my last. I never thought that I would find my place in the world until you found me, and that's because my place is by your side. And I vow that no matter what I will always come home to you, and that I will find you in every lifetime. I didn't know I could ever find you more beautiful but then now you are about to become a mother... you have already given me everything and I promise that your happiness will always be my priority."
Irene quickly wiped away a tear that had fallen down her cheek, her had really wanted to force herself to not cry. She had always been an ugly crier, but his words had completely overcome her. She wasn't even sure if her words could compare to his.
"Clark, everyday since I've met you has been an adventure. I was happy before I met you but now I feel incredibly alive." Irene began fighting back the tears, and now she deeply regretted allowing Clark to go first. She could feel herself being overcome by emotion and she wasn't entirely sure if she would be able to get thorough her vows. "You are absolutely everything. Everything I didn't know I was dreaming of and everything I could possibly love. I love how you make every moment feel special. And I love how you make me feel like I'm everything too. There is nothing more beautiful than knowing that is forever and knowing just how wonderful our future will be. I promise to always be the person you can come home to after a difficult day. There will never be a day that you won't feel like you're at home by my side."
The day seemed to be going by too quickly for Irene's liking. She tried to hold onto every single moment not wanting to ever forget a detail. After saying their vows it was as if a weight had been lifted off their shoulders, and now they were all dancing and enjoying themselves. Irene had never had a party like this, she could remember when she was younger how badly her had wanted a quinceañera. But they had never been able to afford it.
Clark was dancing with Martha while Irene was slow dancing with her brother. This was already the third sonf that they had danced together, though they were doing more talking than dancing. They had been so busy the last couple of days they hadn't had much time to talk about things that weren't wedding related.
"May I?" Bruce asked and if Angel did mind he didn't show it as he nodded and stepped aside. Irene was surprise how civil Angel was considering that he wasn't much of a fan of Bruce Wayne, even after she had told him everything Bruce had done for them.
"I'm glad you were able to make it Bruce." Irene told him honestly, because after everything she couldn't imagine this day without him. The only reason Irene and Clark were able to get married was because of him, because he never gave up on the idea of bringing Clark back.
"Gotham can take care of itself for one day."
"Any leads on Luthor?" Irene couldn't help but question. As much as she was enjoying every second of the day it was still impossible to ignore the fact that while they were here celebrating, Lex Luthor was now free an undoubtedly planning his next move against them.
Bruce remained silent, and for a moment Irene couldn't help but feel slightly irritated by the idea that he could be ignoring her question. He had never been one to hide information from her before. "Irene, you shouldn't worry about any of that. Not today at least."
"Tell me. I won't be able to enjoy tonight if you don't." Irene countered knowing that she would only sour Clark's mood if she asked him. The last couple of days leading up to the wedding he had mentioned anything regarding Lex Luthor or the other escaped criminals, even when he had been going out everyday in search of any leads. Irene knew that he wanted to protect her from any stress, but she felt that she couldn't just sit back and wait.
Bruce sighed knowing that she wasn't going to drop the subject. When Irene wanted to know something she simply couldn't stay in the dark about it. "The team and I have been searching. Exhausting every resource but still nothing."
"What is he planning?"
"I don't know yet." He admitted and Irene could see how frustrated he was by the fact. Lex Luthor was too much of a powerful and intelligent man to be on the loose. The longer he was free the more time he had to cause more damage. "But I will figure it out. I'll find him Irene I promise you that."
Irene smiled and nodded knowing that Bruce would keep his word. That he would do everything possible to find Lex Luthor, but she found that she couldn't also sit by and wait for them to find answers. She also had the ability to do something about it, though she knew better than to push the subject any further. It was all a problem for another day.
Because after all that they had been through Irene and Clark deserved this. A day that was just about them and not everything that was threatening what they had.
"Why have you been so kind to us Bruce?" Irene couldn't help but question because Bruce had gone above and beyond for them. He hardly even knew her and he was doing everything possible for them without hesitation.
"Clark was right," He began as they continued to sway slowly to the music, Irene had never been much of a dancer but it was clear that Bruce had dance lessons in the past. "you really do have the ability to change people's lives."
Irene didn't have the chance to ask him exactly what she had done because suddenly Cat was pulling her away from Bruce. "Come on Irene it's time to cut the cake!"
Cat, Martha and her mother had coordinated most of the preparations for the wedding. Admittedly Irene had never been the most organized person, but Cat certainly was. In fact Irene couldn't help but wonder if maybe Cat should have been a wedding planner instead of a reporter.
Irene had to admit that most of the day she had been craving the cake, now she felt as if she couldn't have enough of it. Once everyone who had gathered around to watch them cut the cake went back to their tables to enjoy their own slice of cake, Irene practically began to devour hers. She had never been much of a fan of cake before but now it tasted heavenly.
Once Irene finished her slice of cake she looked up to find Clark staring at her. "What?"
Clark simply smiled as he leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss on her lips. "I just can't believe I finally get to call myself your husband."
Irene couldn't help but smile too. She still hadn't entirely wrapped her mind around the fact that she could now call Clark Kent her husband. That she was now his wife.
"I never thought it was possible." Irene said softly in honest disbelief. When she had accepted to co-write a story with Lois Lane over two years ago she had never thought that it would cause her entire world to change forever. Now she couldn't possible imagine anything every being any different.
"What?"
"To be this happy." She replied honestly because although the world around them was difficult and imperfect what they had wasn't.
The truth was that their lives together were just beginning. They would never fully escape the fact that there would always be some kind of threat in their lives. But the last couple of years were proof that they could face anything together. Not even death itself could keep them apart. Whatever life threw their way nothing would tear them apart. Irene and Clark had so much to look forward to now and nothing could take that away from them.
A/N: It has been a long journey finishing this story and at the end I think it's one of the stories that I am most proud of. It does feel like there is so much of Clark and Irene's story that is left to tell and although I do plan on writing a sequel. You all have been requesting it and I have actually already published the book already it is titled Something Darker. But overall thank you all for this three year long journey with this story. You have all shown it so much love and I am so grateful. It was your love for this story that motivated me to finish it in the first place and not remain just an idea like so many of my other stories.I hope that this was a satisfying ending, I know that I definitely cried a little writing it. Hope you continue to support me by reading any of my other stories.
