74| Call To Stand

Irene couldn't bring herself to open her eyes until until her see touched the solid ground. Some part of her had been afraid that if she opened her eyes that she would wake up to find that it had all been a dream. But she could feel his soft skin under her hands as she held onto him tightly.

Clark slowly let go Irene once they had arrived and Irene was shocked to find that he had brought them to Smallville. But she slowly realized that this was Clark's first home, the only one that really mattered, because it was the home that shaped him into the man that he was now.

"You brought us here." Irene said softly as looked out at the now abandoned Kent Farm. She couldn't help but feel sad at the realization that he had come here to see his mother, and she wasn't here. Last time she had spoken to Martha she had said that she had lost the farm and was still in the process of moving out. "You remembered."

Knowing that he could remember his childhood home meant that his memories were returning to him was a relief.

"This is home." He replied softly as he looked away from her and to the farm.

Irene reached forward and taking his hand knowing that this all had to be overwhelming for him. Together they walked toward the house and Irene could still feel her heart beating rapidly in her chest. She had to admit that she was afraid that he didn't remember her. Although he had taken her here he hadn't said her name or said anything that pointed to him knowing who she was.

When they finally reached the front door Irene bent down grabbing they key that usually was under the welcome mat. She was relieved to find it still there as she opened the door, the last thing she would have wanted was to break in the Kent home.

It was heartbreaking to see the house almost entirely empty. There were still a couple of boxes that remained in the corner, and Irene couldn't believe that this had happened. All the family pictures and old school projects were gone. It was sad for a home that used to look like it had been to loved.

Clark was silent as he walked across the living room and towards the hallway. Irene immediately knew that he was headed to his old room, and knew that he would find it empty too. Irene didn't say anything as she followed him, watching as he looked around his empty room. The truth was that Irene didn't know what to say because for the first time she had know idea what he wanted to hear. What he needed to hear to make him feel better.

Irene stayed by the doorway watching him as he silently looked out the window. As the moment stretched on, Irene forced herself to snap out of whatever she was feeling. Clark needed her to be stronger.

"Your mother got behind on the payments. She never told anyone." Irene said as she began to look through some of the boxes for his clothes. Taking the first flannel shirt that she found Irene slowly walked over to him. Clark hadn't moved from his spot staring out the window, he was almost a statue.

When he felt her at his side he finally looked away from the window. "I don't understand."

"She's a proud woman, Clark." She replied knowing that Martha had to have been behind on the payments for months now but was never willing to ask her son for more help. Holding up an old flannel Irene held it out for him. "Here."

Clark looked at the shirt and it was clear that he was still confused from the way he looked at it, as if unsure what she wanted him to do with it. Although he still wasn't completely himself Irene could finally see a glimmer of recognition in his eyes as she helped him into his shirt.

Irene's hands were shaking as she began to button up the shirt. He looked down at her hands with the same confused look in his eye. He didn't say anything until she finished doing the last button.

"She loved it here." He whispered as he looked back out the window, and Irene expected him to be sad. But she was surprised to see a slight smile on his lips as if he was living out all of his memories again. "So did I."

Again Clark became silent, and Irene knew that she had to tell Martha now. That maybe she could help Clark through this a lot better than Irene could.

Stepping out of Clark's off bedroom Irene called Martha, and was relieved when she answered on the first ring. Martha understandably couldn't believe what Irene was telling here, it was something that Irene was still processing herself. And Martha didn't care about the specifics of how it was possible, she just needed the confirmation that he was back.

Irene wasn't sure how she was able to get through the phone call without getting overly emotional, that was a luxury that she simply didn't have at the moment.

When Irene stepped back into Clark's bedroom she felt herself panic for a moment when she realized that he was gone. But the panic only lasted for a moment as she saw him standing in the middle of the cornfield from the window.

She felt herself smile at the sight of him. He looked so at peace out in the field. She hadn't seen him that way in a long time, ever since the incident in the desert he had been carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Now he looked free.

Slowly Irene walked down the porch steps to him without even thinking. She was like a moth drawn to a flame, she just had to be near him. If he felt her coming nothing gave it away.

"Take that as a yes." He said softly never turning around to face her, and Irene wondered if he was even talking to her.

Irene stopped unsure of what he was talking about. He had to have still been confused he had only been back for two hours. "What?

"The ring." He clarified as he finally turned around. Irene didn't look away from him, but her fingers instinctively touched the diamond ring on her hand. Even when she had packed away all of Clark's things the night before she wasn't able to bring herself to take the ring off.

"You're really back?" Irene questioned slowly as she finally allowed herself to really hope that everything would be able to go back to normal. Even if everything was the farthest thing from normal possible.

Clark smiled as her and nodded, and it was like the wall of uncertainty inside of her crumbled. Instantly she started running to him through the cornfield and practically jumped into his arms.

He caught her in his arms and Irene could feel as he lifted them a couple of feet off the ground. Holding her for a moment her then pulled away enough to be able to meet her eyes.

Her eyes that were already beginning to fill with tear before he kissed her softly. But even as he kissed her Irene found that she couldn't hold back her tears any longer.

"You're crying." He noted as he brushed the tears from her cheeks as their feet touched the ground again. She really hadn't wanted to cry, she had never been much of a crier before. The emotions were all too much and she just felt so incredibly happy to have him back.

"I've just... I've just missed you so much." Irene admitted knowing that she would never be able to put into words the torment that his absence had caused.

The worst part was that she couldn't resent him for it. He had done the right thing. Even if it had felt like he had torn her soul right out of her body.

"I have a second chance, Irene. And I am not gonna waste it." Clark assured her as he pulled her into another kiss. Irene had spent the last couple of months missing the way Clark kissed her, and with every kiss from him she felt herself coming together again. For the first time in a long time everything felt right. Pulling away from her Clark placed cupped her face in his hands looking into her eyes. "Life for the four of us... I'm going to make sure it's perfect."

"Four?" Irene repeated unsure if she had heard him correctly, or if maybe he was still a little confused.

"Yes. Four." He said with a small smile as he looked down placing his hand on her stomach. It wasn't until his hand was on her stomach that she seemed to remember that she was pregnant. She hadn't even considered how he was going to react. But beyond that she slowly began to realize what he meant by four. "You didn't know?"

"I knew about one." Irene said feeling herself panic for a moment. She had been mentally preparing herself for one baby, now that she knew there was another she couldn't help but feel more nervous. "I was supposed to have my first appointment today."

Clark questioned and she could already see the panic and worry in his eyes. "What?"

"I'll just reschedule its fine." Irene assured him still trying to process the new information and knowing that he would fly them to the hospital instantly if she let him.

He relaxed a little but the worry was still there, but he didn't seem to be able to say what he wanted. "Does this change anything for you?"

Irene found herself immediately shaking her head. She knew that if she chose to terminate the pregnancy that he would support her decision. Even if he did want them to become parents, but over the last couple of days Irene had started to love the idea of becoming a mother. It had become something that she was looking forward to even if it hadn't been in her plans before. "No."

Clark rested his forehead against hers and for a moment they remained there taking in the feeling for being together after being apart for so long. And maybe for him it hadn't felt as if it had been almost four months, but he was aware of how his absence had affected her. "I love you."

"I love you." She said softly as she placed a hand on his cheek, and as much as she wanted to simply stand here and forget about everything that was happening she simply couldn't. The man that she loved be a a responsibility to the world, and right now the world needed him.

They had already been running out of time as it was. And if Steppenwolf didn't already have the last Mother Box he would soon. And that meant that soon they would all be doomed. Meaning that even though she just got him back she would have to ask Clark to put himself in danger again.

"What's wrong?" Clark questioned immediately able to see right through her.

Maybe Irene was a coward because she couldn't even meet he's eyes to tell him what was going on, he had to place his hand under her chin to force her to look at him.

"It's just... Bruce and the others. There's a reason they brought you back." Irene told him not even sure where to start. Everything happening was so confusing to her even now, and she didn't even know how to explain it to him. "There's actually a lot you need to catch up on."

Before he could say anything his head turned towards the road where a red truck was going down the driveway. Irene didn't need to have Clark's supervision or hearing to know that it was Martha driving down the road.

Clark looked down at her and smiled brightly. He took her face in his hands and kissed her forehead. "You called Ma?"

Irene laughed a little, feeling tears build up in her eyes. She hated that was becoming easily emotional, though she was going to choose to blame the pregnancy for that. "Of course I did."

They both watched as the truck came to a stop in the driveway just a couple of feet away from them.

Martha got out of the truck, frozen in place when her eyes finally landed on her son. There had to have been a part of her that hadn't believed Irene, but now she knew that it was the truth. That Clark was really back. "Are you really you?"

Clark started walking towards his mother, and it was clear that he was restraining himself from running to her. "I'm really me, Ma."

Martha laughed as she hugged her son tightly, and Irene stood back allowing them to have a moment together.

"Listen, Ma. They wanted me back for a reason." Clark began knowing that this would be especially difficult for his mother. "I need to find out why."

Martha nodded slowly tears building up in her eyes. No doubt fearing that she might lose her son again after only having him back for a moment. It was a fear that Irene shared knowing that Steppenwolf was so much more dangerous than Doomsday.

But this time it wasn't just going to be Clark, Bruce and Diana. Now there were more of them, and Irene had to believe that they were all strong enough together.

A/N: Can you believe that there are only five more chapters left? I definitely can't considering that I have been working on this story for about three years now. Genuinely so happy with all the love this story has been getting.
