73| Superman Returns

Irene hadn't worn any of her work clothes in a little of three months, and now as she tried to zip up her skirt she realized that she was going to need to start buying new clothes.

Her small bump had gotten bigger in the span of a week, and maybe if she hadn't almost starved herself from grief the last couple of months she would have been showing a lot more.

She had been wearing sweaters and  loosely fitting clothes the last couple of days not wants Bruce and the others to know. But she had no reason to hide it anymore.

Irene could see the shock on all of her coworkers when she stepped out of the elevator. For most of them they hadn't seen her since Clark's funeral, that had been thirteen weeks ago. And now she was back, and she was very clearly pregnant.

She was sure that most of them were too afraid to come up and talk to her. Probably afraid that they would scare her away. Instead they all offered her welcoming smiles before turning back to their work.

"Irene you didn't say you were coming back to work." Cat said as she pulled her into a tight hug. There was worry in her eyes but also relief.

"I'm just here to drop something off for Perry." Irene clarified know that her being her was more of an impulsive decision. "I have a doctor's appointment in two hours. I just couldn't push this off any longer."

"You ready?" Irene questioned.

"Maybe you should talk to him alone first." Jimmy suggested, and Irene knew that he was right.

Perry would probably have a lot of questions for her, or maybe he would want to terminate their contract considering she had been away from work for so long.

Unlike before Irene knocked before entering the editor-in-chief's office. She didn't have the luxury of simply bursting in like she had done in the past.

"Miranda." He said casually but he couldn't successfully hide the surprise clear in his eyes. Whether it was the fact that she was back after so many months or the very now very obvious bump she now had. "Sit."

Irene walked across the office and took a seat across from his desk. "I know it's been over three months chief but I would really love to come back to work."

"Don't call me chief." He replied sternly and Irene couldn't help but smile a little feeling like things were going back to normal. She hadn't even realized how much she had actually missed Perry. "Glad to have you back Miranda."

"I already have a pitch for you." She stated eager to get started, after so many months away she realized how much she had needed this.

"Let's hear it." Perry said as he leaned back against his chair ready to hear her pitch.

"The Justice League." Irene stated confidently because after hours of arguing with Jimmy about a name that suited the team they were finally able to settle on Justice League. "I'm thinking we introduce each member separately before presenting them as a team."

"The Justice League?"

"Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman," Irene began as she set the individual photos that Jimmy had takes on his desk one at a time. "Cyborg and Supergirl."

"The Justice League." Perry repeated as he tested the name one last time before nodding. "I like it."

"Jimmy is my co-writer on this. So I expect him to get paid accordingly." She continued knowing that she was rusty with her negotiation skills, but needing to be clear on what she wanted. "We already wrote the piece on Supergirl. You'll find it in our Dropbox."

Irene and Jimmy chose to focus on Supergirl first because they had already discussed with Kara whether or not she wanted to go public. The other might need some convincing and also setting guidelines on how much of their backgrounds they wanted to make public. Kara had made hers very clear as she wanted to keep her secret identity.

"I'll talk to Olsen to negotiate his pay."

"I'll officially be back to work tomorrow." Irene clarified satisfied with how everything was going. She knew from the beginning that this story was something that Perry would have never been able to turn away. It was too big. "Jimmy and I will have the piece on Batman ready for you then."

Perry nodded but something in his expression had changed. It seemed that there was something that he wanted to say, but that he was struggling to find the right words.

"What Kent did for this city... the sacrifice he made," Perry began and she could see how difficult this was for him. "he was a real hero. This world was lucky to have him."

Irene didn't know what to say. Some part of her had always suspected that Perry knew, but hearing him confirm it shocked her. "You knew?"

"You forget I'm a Pulitzer prize winning reporter too." He said with a slight smile and Irene had to admit that she was grateful for his words.

"How could I forget?" Irene replied, she had admired his work long before she worked at the Daily Planet. "I'll see you tomorrow."

It's felt as if there was a huge weight lifted off her shoulders when she stepped out of Perry's office. Like maybe it was possible to move forward and not stay so heavily stuck on the past.

Irene stopped at the sight of Clark's empty desk, and found that seeing it didn't tear her apart the way she expected it to. Of course the hurt and grief was still there, but she finally felt a little at peace.

"How did it go?" Jimmy questioned as he stood beside her, she could see that he was nervous. It wasn't guaranteed that Perry would even agree to publish, even though Irene knew that he would never turn away such a big story.

But this would also be Jimmy's first time being credited as a writer and not just the photographer of the piece. It was a big step in his career.

"He wants to see you to negotiate your new pay." Irene informed him, happy to see the bright smile that light up his face. The last couple of months hadn't been easy for him either and Jimmy deserved this.

"Really?" He asked again needing additional confirmation. Irene simply nodded in response, before Jimmy pulled her into a quick hug. "Tell me how your appointment goes."

Jimmy practically ran into Perry's office, and she could only hope that he would be able to negotiate himself a good raise.

Irene began walking towards the hospital, admittedly feeling a little nervous about doing her first ultrasound. It felt a bittersweet. She was excited but found there was also a loneliness in it.

The sound of an explosion cause Irene to turn around in the direction of the sound. People on the street began to panic around her, but Irene simply felt her heart stop in her chest.

There was a figure in the sky. Just a couple of blocks away in the direction of heroes park. The figure remained in the air for a couple of moment before disappearing between the buildings.

Before she could even begin to process what was happening she found herself running down the street and pushing past people in her way. Irene didn't stop running until she finally was a street away where the police were forming a perimeter around Heroes Park.

Clearly there had been an extensive fight in the park,  as she ran through an opening in the perimeter she could see some of the members of the team laying unconscious on the ground.

When Irene finally saw him flying a couple of feet above the ground she felt herself freeze for a moment. It was like all the side had been sucked out of her body.

He was only wearing some tattered black pants. The black pants that they had buried him in thirteen weeks ago. And Irene could feel herself panic, he clearly wasn't himself. He would have never attacked Diana and the others even if they were strangers to him.

Irene didn't react until she looked across the park to where Clark's focus was set. Batman was leaning against an abandoned police car, it wasn't until she saw Clark's glowing red eyes that she realized what was about to happen.

"Wait!" Irene yelled as she ran forward, and maybe she was being reckless. Or maybe even a little naive for believing that Clark would never hurt her even when he clearly wasn't himself.

"Irene don't."  Bruce warned, but Irene ignored him as  she stepped in front of him.

"Clark please." She pleaded as he finally looked down at her. His eyes were still glowing red, but the angry look on his face softened a little. "Please."

Irene watched at the red faded from his eyes as they returned to that shade of blue that she loved so much. Only that there was a pained expression on his face, he was confused.

Clark didn't look away from her as he slowly lowered back to the ground until his feet touched the grass.

"It's me." She said closing the distance between them until she was standing in front of him. Even though he was right in front of her there was some part of Irene that couldn't believe he was real. That maybe this was all just a dream and she would wake up without him by her side again. Unable to help herself Irene reached forward and placed a hand on his cheek. "Clark."

He continued to look at her clearly conflicted and confused. Irene realized then that he didn't know who she was and that broke her. Still she held her composure as much as she could, even when she felt a single tear roll down her cheek. The last thing that she wanted to do was scare him away by getting emotional.

Knowing now that he wasn't going to hurt her she wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him to her. She wasn't sure whether she was doing it for his benefit or her own, what she did know was how amazing it felt to have him in her arms again.

"Let's go." She whispered softly as she could feel him slowly become less tense. Irene felt relief wash over her when he wrapped his arms around her bringing her even closer. "Let's go home. Please."

Clark held onto her a little tighter as he buried his face in her hair, and Irene ran her fingers through his hair in an attempt to continue to soothe him.

"I'm here." Irene assured him because maybe he also needed to know that she was real. "I'm here."

There was no knowing what was going through his head, or what he even remembered. All that mattered was that he was back, and whatever was going on with him they would work through it together.

They were always stronger together.

Suddenly they were up in the air flying far from Metropolis and although Irene didn't know where he was taking them she had faith that everything would be okay.

A/N: The moment that you have all been waiting for had finally arrived. Trust me I have missed Clark just as much as you all have and I have been anxiously waiting to write this moment. Hope you all enjoyed it.
