69| Supergirl

Kara had warned them that she wasn't the strongest flyer, Irene hadn't believed her thinking that maybe she was just doubting herself. However, it turned out that it was true.

Kara wasn't very good at flying. Not in the way Clark was, he always had so much control out of every movement he made.

It wasn't difficult to assume that Kara was simply afraid of how powerful she was. That she could possibly hurt someone if she used them incorrectly. She had only been on Earth for three years while Clark had lived here his entire life. He had almost 40 years to gain full control, it was only natural for Kara to try to suppress something that she considered dangerous.

"Its is so unnecessarily cold." Jimmy muttered as he wrapped his arms around himself to stay warm.

Jimmy had every reason to complain. It was freezing, it was one of the reasons why Irene had only been here once before. Clark had asked if she wanted to visit on multiple occasions but the main reason preferred not to was that this place was Clark's. It was the last piece of home he had left, and she didn't want to get in the way of that.

"Kryptonian DNA detected." The voice said as they large metal doors opened to welcome her in, she immediately recognized it as the voice of Jor-El, Clark's birth father. An android similar to the one that had attacked her that night in Ellesmere moved forward towards her. Clark had programmed her into the system, and she knew that it wouldn't attack her again. Though she couldn't help but remember that night so vividly. "Welcome back Irene Miranda."

Irene met Jimmy's eyes for a singe moment, both of them knowing why it had detected Kryptonian DNA inside of her. She didn't dare look at Kara's reaction not sure if now was the moment to explain to her what her relationship to Clark had actually been.

The world knew her as the reporter who discovered Superman, that was as much as Kara probably knew. And if Kara knew more she hadn't said anything just yet.

"Hello Jor-El." Irene replied as a hologram of Jor-El appeared in front. Looking back she motioned for Kara to step inside.

Kara seemed hesitant at first as she took a cautious step toward, the android moved towards her now as it scanned her.

"Welcome Kara Zod-El I've been waiting for you." Jor-El stated with a grim expression on his face, and it was obvious that he knew what had happened to Clark. Irene didn't know how, Kryptonian technology was way beyond her understanding, but he knew.

"Register James Olsen into the system please." Irene told Joe-El knowing the defenses in the fortress would attack Jimmy as soon as he stepped inside.

"Command accepted." His voice echoed around them as the android scannedJimmy into the system. "Welcomes James Olsen."

"Awesome." Jimmy muttered with an excited smile as he stepped inside.

"I know right?" Kara replied mostly to herself as a wide smile appeared on her lips. She continued continued to look around every corner in awe, like long forgotten memories were returning to her. "It feels like home."

They all silently followed Jor-El's hologram, whatever Clark's father intended for Kara he had to know why they were here. Or at the very least that the world

"Kal-El was meant to be a bridge between two worlds. In some ways he succeeded." Joe-El stated as he looked towards Irene, the meaning behind his words was clear. Clark had succeeded in brining humans and Kryptonian's together, that proof was growing inside of her. "Now that Kal-El is gone Earth is vulnerable. It needs you Kara."

Irene almost came to a stop when they turned the corner down a hallway that displayed different Kryptonian suits. There was only one missing, they one that Clark had chosen for his own.

That missing suit was currently in a box in Irene's closet, a large tear in the chest. Irene had washed out the blood and although she had been tempted to discard it she simply couldn't. It was a reminder of the night she had lost him, but there were far more wonderful memories associated with that suit.

Jimmy touched her arm in an attempt to comfort her, and it helped her keep her emotions at bay. It was incredibly difficult to pretend that she didn't want to just crumble, but there was something much bigger than her happening. Her problems in reality were so small in comparison to everything else, even when it felt like they weighed much heavier in her.

"I think we should give you a moment." Irene said knowing that this was something that Kara had to do on her own. That Kara had a right to discover herself on her own and without the pressure that Jimmy and Irene's presence would be. And if she needed them they would be on the other side of the doors.

Kara nodded before stepping into the room the large metal doors closing behind her.

"It's not much warmer in here." Jimmy muttered as they watched the doors close.

She knew that he was only brining up how cold it was to distract her from everything around them. They were currently standing in a room surrounded

"I told you it was going to be cold." Irene replied as she also wrapped her arms around herself. It was slightly warmer inside, but not by much.

"Didn't think it would be this cold." He countered as he began to pace down the hall for warmth. "You really think she'll find what she needs?"

Irene had no ideas what Kara would find on the other side of those doors. She only knew what little Clark had told her, that it held all the histories of Krypton. There had to be something there that would help Kara. That Jor-El would know what to say to help her. Just like he always knew what to say to Clark when he needed it.

"Let's hope she does."

"What are you going to call her?" Jimmy questioned after a long moment of silence. Irene looked at Jimmy raising a single eyebrow not sure exactly what he was referring too, she was too busy worrying about essentially everything to carry any kind of conversation. "I mean her superhero name. You need to give her one."

Irene wasn't even sure if Kara would want to be a hero in the way that Superman and Batman were. Maybe Kara only intended to help them and return to her normal life. Or maybe she wouldn't find what she was looking for and she would decide to not help at all.

"I don't know I haven't been feeling incredibly inspired lately." Irene admitted because no matter how hard she tried that spark that fueled her had dimmed. Even though it felt that it was gone altogether Irene refused to believe that it was true.

"How about Supergirl?" He suggested.

A small smile touched Irene's lip, it was a name that made sense. It was a name that people would find comfort in, one that they were familiar with. "Not bad. Not incredibly creative though."

"Rude."

"You should probably run it by her. See if she likes it."

They didn't know how long Kara had been on the other side of the large metal doors. But it had been long enough for Jimmy to have caught her up in all the office drama she had missed out on in the last three months.

Just as they both were about to grow impatient the doors opened causing both Jimmy and Irene to look at Kara with wide eyes.

"Wow." Jimmy almost breathless at the sight of her.

Not that Irene could blame him she looked amazing in the suit. It fit her well and she radiated all the power that ran through her.

The symbol shinned brightly on her chest. She wore a red skirt with red knee high boots. The Kryptonian suit that she had chosen was so distinctly her that there was no denying that she had been born for this.

Jimmy had been right. She was Supergirl.

"Can you give us a minute Jimmy?" Irene said needing a moment to speak to Kara without any extra pressure that Jimmy's presence could bring.

"Sure. I guess I'll just wander." Jimmy said as he looked around before walking into a random hallway.

It was until Jimmy was out of sight that Irene started to talk, even though she wasn't entertaining sure what she was going to say or what Kara needed to hear. What she did know was that she didn't want Kara making a mistake, because once the world knew about her there would be no turning back.

She would be burdened by the responsibility. And she had made a good life of herself, and maybe Irene didn't want to carry the guilt of ruining Kara's life.

"This symbol it meant something on your world. It means something in this one too." Irene said knowing that the world would see that symbol again and would be reminded of him. She could only hope that they had learned their lesson, that they wouldn't turn on Kara they way they had in Clark.

Kara looked around at all the Kryptonian suits surrounding them. The symbol of the House of El shining all around them. "Hope."

Irene nodded doing her best to control all of her emotions, the last thing that Kara needed was to deal with a crying stranger. "Clark started something. This world didn't understand him, they weren't ready. You're a second chance."

"You loved him." Kara stated and Irene could feel her breath get caught in her throat.

"Yes, I love him." Irene said because that love wasn't gone, even if he was. She felt that love with every breath that she took and she knew that no amount of time would change that. "He was my world."

Kara's eyes trailed down to Irene's stomach. Maybe she wasn't showing just yet but Kara did have the ability to not only hear the baby but see it too. "You're pregnant."

"Yes."

"I should have... I should have been there when he fought Doomsday." Kara told Irene with tears in her eyes, this was something that had been clearly tearing her apart for some time. "I was sent here to protect Kal-El and I failed."

"You didn't fail." Irene told her knowing that she had every right to live her life the way that she had wanted and that Kara had no obligation to seek Clark out. "You have the right to live your life the way that you choose. Clark made his choice."

Her words seemed to have eased Kara a little, as her eyes finally looked up to meet Irene's. There was a new confidence in her eyes, and Irene could only hope that Kara just how important she was. Just how much she can change just by existing.

"This threat. What is it?"

"There is this being Darkseid that coming. He's apparently already sent one of his conquerors here in search of these things called Mother Boxes that are supposed to help them take full control of Earth."

Diana had told her the story and even then Irene knew that she hadn't completely understood just how big and terrifying the threat was. She could only try to imagine, and she tried to simplify they story she barely understood.

"I've heard of Darkseid." Kara stated and Irene could help but feel relieved, because that meant that she must have had a greater understanding than her. "He was always more of a scary story they told Kryptonian children before they went to bed."

"Then you know how dangerous he is."

Kara nodded once the almost childlike expression on her face hardened. "Has he found any of the Mother Boxes?"

"We believe he has the one guarded by the Amazons." Irene replied knowing very well that as they spoke that they could have already found another. "Will you help us?"

"Earth is my home now. Of course I'll help. Though I don't really know how much help I could really be."

"I think you're underestimating yourself a little too much Kara." She told Kara knowing that maybe she didn't see her potential right now, but that she would soon. And she would t be alone. She would be with other who also had amazing abilities, Kara wasn't going to be alone in the way Clark had been. "You're going to do great things. You'll bring bring people hope."

Suddenly Kara wrapped her arms around Irene tightly. "Thank you."

Irene was stunned for a moment not having expected Kara to hug her, it didn't feel like she had done anything special. But she hugged Kara back regardless.

Jimmy brought his hands together the sound echoing loudly through the fortress. "Alright Supergirl let's go."

"Supergirl?" Kara repeated as she looked down at the symbol shinning on her chest.

"You don't like it?" He questioned instantly losing his love for the name.

Kara smiled a little and shrugged. "I like it."

"It's time to go meet the others." Irene said knowing that maybe this was too much too soon for Kara, but they simply didn't have time.
