63| Never Love Again

Irene looked at herself in the mirror as she furiously brushed her teeth. It was like her morning sickness had gotten worse since she found out she was pregnant. She couldn't help but wonder if maybe it was all psychological, that because she knew now it would only get worse.

But she was trying to eat more knowing that starving herself as she had was only putting herself and the baby in danger.

That was why she had scheduled an appointment with her OB-GYN at the end of the week to make sure that everything was okay. That her negligence hadn't hurt her baby.

But she didn't want to go to the appointment on her own. Asking Jimmy or Angel to go with her didn't feel right, and that was because she knew that she wanted Martha there. Irene couldn't have her own mother with her, and Martha was the closest thing she could get to that.

Most importantly Martha should be a part of her grandchild's life, and Irene felt terrible for having not told her yet. Of course she knew that her reaction would be positive, that of course Martha would be happy. But Irene felt as that it had taken her so long to tell her.

Irene picked up her phone, knowing that she couldn't put it off any longer. But the moment she did there was a knock on the door.

When she opened the door she expected to see Bruce Wayne again, that he had come back to try to convince her. He seemed to stubborn enough to do that. Instead it was Diana Prince who was at her door, looking as out of place as she clearly felt.

"Diana?" Irene said softly unable to hide her surprise. Out of the list of people who she thought could possibly be at her door Diana wasn't one of them.

There was a relaxed smile on her lips as she studied Irene. "I was wondering if you would like to go out for lunch?"

"I'm not.... I'm not really dressed." Irene replied slowly and although it was surprising that she was her it was even more surprising that she wanted to go out for lunch.

And even if it was ridiculous Irene couldn't help but feel self conscious. Because Diana was standing in front of her looking incredibly beautiful and Irene was looking as awful as she felt.

"That's alright I'll wait." Diana replied and there was something about her tone that said that she wasn't going to take no for an answer.

"Alright, give me couple of minutes." Irene said as she opened the door wider to let her in.

It didn't take Irene long to get ready, and for them to walk to a restaurant only two blocks away from her apartment building. The walk was mostly spent in silence, though that was mostly due to Irene trying not to focus on the Superman banner across the city.

Three months later and Metropolis still mourned Superman. They felt his absence, after all he had become part of their daily lives. The used to read about Superman on the Daily Planet everyday, instead now the read about the crime rates going up sense he disappeared.

Metropolis was changing.

"How about a glass of wine?" Diana suggested as she looked at the wine menu.

Normally Irene would have loved a glass of wine. But that was completely off the table now.

"Not for me. Water would be great." Irene told the waiter who nodded before walking away. The restaurant that Diana had taken to her looked fancy and was definitely not the kind of place that Irene was used to eating at.

An awkward silence settles between the two women and Irene wondered if Diana even wanted to do this. "Did Bruce tell you to come?"

The surprised look on her face was all Irene needed to know that Bruce was not involved in this. "No. I've been meaning to check on you. I would have done so sooner but... it isn't easy for me."

"What's not easy?"

"Seeing your grief. I believe I see myself in you a little too much." Diana admitted and Irene could see it in her eyes. She could see Diana's grief, could see what Diana probably saw in her.

It seemed like this meeting was more for Diana than it was about Irene. Which Irene was actually relieved about considering that she was tired about the focus being on her. "Who did you lose?"

"His name was Steve Trevor." She replied a small smile on her lips as she said his name. Like it was bitter sweet to talk about him. "He was a soldier."

Irene thought back in that photograph of Diana taken during World War I, there was a reason the the photograph was so important to her. Now it seemed to make a little sense. "He was one of the men in the picture. The one from 1918."

"Yes. He was the love of my life. He is the only man I have ever loved." Diana stated firmly, and Irene understood her completely. Clark had only been part of three year of her life but that was enough for Irene to know. She knew that she would never be able to live again, Clark had been it for her. It seemed that Diana had found that kind of love too. "That night... I wish there was more that I could have done."

Irene shook her head understanding why Diana and Bruce felt guilty, but she also knew that there was no reason for them to feel that way. For her an Bruce to blame themselves.

"Diana I don't blame you. Clark did the right thing. He did the only thing that could have been done." Irene told her knowing that there hadn't been a moment where Clark hesitated. There wasn't anything Clark would have changed about that night, he would have sacrificed himself repeatedly to make sure that people didn't die.

"The world needs Superman." Diana stated.

"I don't leave my apartment because every time I do I get angry. I look around and his symbol is everywhere. It's on t-shirts, it's graffitied on walls and the banners around the city. And all I can think about is how hated him just before... and they mourn him now that he's gone. Now they love him."

"This anger you feel is normal. It will pass." Diana said and it was clear that she understood what Irene was feeling. It was almost surreal that she could have something in common with someone like Diana Prince. "I will not lie and say that the pain will go away but it will fade with time. It will remain a dull ache."

"I don't know if I'm comforted by that or not."

Diana smiled and it was the kind of smile that Irene felt that she needed. It was a hopeful smile, one that told her that things would get better. "You could start be returning to work."

"I haven't... that drive I had to find stories and answers is just gone." Irene admitted and the thought made her sad, because Irene used to love going to work. She was so passionate about what she did, and writing used to bring her so much joy. Now that feeling just vanished.

It was like everything that once brought her joy only made her more empty inside because she could no longer find joy in them.

"And yet you have questions about me."

It was like Diana could see through Irene, because of she had questions. There was so much that she didn't know about Diana. She was sure the a simple lunch wouldn't be enough to get to know her. "I don't like having questions. I like answers."

"Ask." Diana insisted.

"You're not like Clark. You're not Kryptonian. And something tells me you just aren't any meta-human." Irene stated knowing that although there was so much that the world don't know about meta-humans there was more to Diana that just that.

There was a wisdom to Diana, and she was a warrior how it seemed had lived hundreds of years.

"I am Diana of Themyscira, daughter of Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons and Zeus the god of skies."

Irene wasn't sure what she was expecting Diana to say, but it certainly wasn't that. After Clark nothing should have surprised her anymore, but hearing that Ancient Greek gods not only existed but that Diana was one of them shocked her.

It made her realize that there was still so much of the world that she didn't know about. That there was a lot more that she could discover.

"Wow. If an Amazonian warrior Demi-god princess can't find love again after over 100 years I am definitely screwed." Irene finally said causing Diana to laugh.

"When you put it that way I suppose you are."

She didn't know Diana's story, but she couldn't believe that she had spent over a hundred years in hiding. Not when there were hundreds of years of history when the world needed someone like her.

"Diana the world did need Superman." Irene said remembering what Diana had told her earlier. She was right the the world needed a symbol like Superman even if the hadn't known it at the time. "But he's gone now. And I think the world needed you too."

Diana sighed, there was haunted look in her eyes like if she was reliving the past in the present. And maybe she was because history had a tendency to repeat itself. No one knew that better than Diana.

"After Steve... after the First World War I turned my back on humanity. I could not understand how humans had the capability of being so selfish and cruel to one another."

"I guess a lot of us can be selfish and cruel. But Clark believed that everyone deserved a chance to be saved." Irene replied and she realized then that Clark had changed something in Diana just like he had in Bruce. And she wondered what Clark would tell Diana now, but what Irene did know is that he wouldn't want this world to remain unprotected. "I also think that there are a lot of little girls that could use a wonder woman like you to look up to."

Someone needed to fill that void that Superman had left behind, and Diana could do it. Because Irene needed to believe that there had to be some greater reason for Clark dying.

That maybe his death is what would inspire people to be greater.

A/N: Alright next chapter is when things are really going to start kicking off. I really enjoyed writing this chapter between Diana and Irene.
