58 | Losing Battle
The farther down that she continued to swim the more worried she got that maybe it was too far for her too reach. But then she saw the faint green glow from the Kryptonite and she swam faster until she finally had it in her hand.
Jimmy had been right the spear was heavy, and she was struggling to swim back up to the top. She almost made it, she knew she was close but just before she could reach the surface there was an explosion.
The sky suddenly turned orange and yellow, then in a split second debris fell into the the lake. Large pieces of concrete fell, one of them hitting Irene in the arm.
She tried to push through the pain and make it out again but there was too much debris in the way and she was running out of oxygen.
Jimmy's voice sounded like an echo underwater and she could hear him saying her name. But no matter how many times he called out to her it didn't change the fact that she had run out of oxygen and she no longer had the strength to keep swimming. She felt as the spear slipped through her finger because she no longer had the strength to hold it.
Everything around her was turning dark as Irene attempted to fight the urge to gasp for air. She felt as But just as she was about to lose the fight Irene felt as he wrapped an arm around her. Irene didn't need to open her eyes to know it was Clark.
The moment they were back to the surface Irene gasped for air, feeling lightheaded from all the time she had spent underwater.
"I'm here." Clark assured her softly as he set her down on the edge of the lake.
Jimmy kneeled down desperately de her and together they watched as Clark dived back into the lake. It felt like he was down there for far too long and although she knew that Clark wouldn't drown, she was afraid that the Kryptonite would weaken him to the point where he would have the strength to swim back up.
She could see the green glow approaching, but it's approach slowed and they could see Clark's body slowly floating it's way to the top.
"Clark." Irene said as she reached into the water, taking his arm. But he was too heavy for her to lift on her own. "Jimmy help me."
Together they pulled Clark out of the lake. He was completely unconscious but the spear was still tight in his grip. The Kryptonite was poisoning him and he still refused to let go.
Jimmy took the spear from his grasp tossing it a couple of feet away.
"Clark." She repeated softly as she brushed some the the wet curls from his face. It took him a moment to regain consciousness and she tried to smile down at him but the look on his face made it impossible. "Clark. Clark. Are you alright?"
He didn't say anything as he slowly sat up, looking across the island where Bruce and Diana were still fighting that thing. It was a losing battle and yet they kept fighting.
Clark turned his attention back to Irene, and he was simply looking at her with a slight smile on his lips. It was a sad smile, one that Irene had never seen from him. "I love you."
Irene looked across the island watching Diana continuing her fight against the creature. Then suddenly she felt her blood run cold as she realized what he intended to do. "No. No, Clark, you can't."
"This is my world." He told her but Irene didn't care what his reasoning was. It didn't matter, and maybe that made her selfish and cruel but she simply didn't care.
There had to be another way.
She knew that things were bad. But they couldn't possibly be that bad. There just had to be another way she refused believe that there was no chance.
That Clark had to do this to save them. Because if that was the case she didn't want to be saved.
"No, Clark, don't." Irene pleaded her voice faltered, but one look into his eyes and she knew that he had already made up his mind.
Clark reached out placing a hand on her cheek as he brushed away the tears that were already falling down her face. "You are my world."
She remembered his words that night on the balcony. The night of the bombing at the Capital, when he had told her that his world no longer existed.
"No. Please. Clark." She begged knowing that she couldn't do it. That she couldn't live in a world without Clark Kent.
That if he died so would she.
And she would beg him on her knees to stay. Her pride and dignity no longer existed, she didn't care. Irene would do anything to get him to stay.
"Jim." Clark said softly and before Irene could fully understand what was happening she felt as Jimmy wrapped his arms around her.
Clark stood up then giving her an apologetic smile before walking away from her.
"Clark!" Irene yelled as she attempted to fight Jimmy's hold on her, and his hold on her was so tight it was almost painful.
Irene continued to fight Jimmy as she watched Clark pick up the Kryptonite spear and fly toward the creature. She could see how difficult it was for him to fly with that spear in his hand. But Clark was fighting thought the pain the Kryptonite caused him.
She kept yelling his name hoping that maybe he would change his mind. That he would stop and try to find another find another way.
That they would find another way together. That they could do it because they were a team and they always figured it out.
But Clark didn't stop, he didn't even look back as he confide flying toward that thing. Diana it seemed had been able to contain it with a glowing lasso, but even Irene in her desperation and denial knew that Diana would not be able to contain the creature for very long.
It all seemed to happen in slow motion, every second was like torture as Irene watched Clark rushes and impales the creature with the Kryptonite spear. The orange waves of electricity coming from the creature turned green. And for one second she hoped that maybe that was it.
That it was over. That it was over and that Clark would live and they would go home together. That everything would be okay.
But the hope died in an instant as the creature suddenly stuck out impaling Clark in the chest with what looked like bone coming from its arm. In that moment it was like if she too had been impaled through the chest.
And she cried out his name again when she heard his cry of pain as Clark imbedded the spear deeper in the creatures chest. But that action caused the bone impaled in his chest to also go deeper.
His cry of pain shook the ground and she could feel it through her. She could feel is vibrate and Irene was sure it was the most painful thing that she had experienced.
And she knew it then. Even if she refused to to accept it.
Irene knew that Clark was gone. That in a matter of seconds she had lost him.
