56| Batman v Superman

The island where Blackgate Penitentiary was once located was entirely abandoned. It had been for years, long before Irene was ever born. There had been an undisclosed incident that had happened, there were people who said the island was cursed.

Now all prisoners in Gotham were mostly sent to Arkham Asylum or transferred to Stryker's Island Penitentiary in Metropolis.

Irene could see how nervous Jimmy was by the way he was tapping his finger against his camera. Of course she was nervous and scared to but she was able to hide it better.

The second that the helicopter landed Irene and Jimmy stepped off and ran towards the abandoned prison building. They did even have a second to hesitate, there simply wasn't any time. There was no way of knowing what exactly was happening in the building but they could hear it.

Could hear the crashing and the falling of rubble. They were fighting, it was easy to assume as much.

"Martha!" Clark's voice echoed through the empty building. He sounded desperate and afraid. Clearly he hadn't been able to convince Bruce Wayne to help him. "Find him! Save...Martha."

"Why did you say that name?" Someone yelled in response.

Irene started running faster annoyed that she hadn't had a chance to change shoes. The sound of her heels echoes throughout the empty building as Jimmy followed close behind.

She stopped at the sight of Superman laying semi-unconscious on top of a pile of fallen rubble. Batman seemed wearing some kind of steel armor, he had his foot on the base of Clark's throat. But it was the large spear in his hand that caused her heart to stop.

A familiar green glow came from it, and she had no doubt that it was made out of Kryptonite. Whatever fight had happened in the building had been extensive, and had weakened Clark. He wasn't moving and Irene ran across the room the room to him knowing that the Kryptonite made it impossible for him to properly defend himself.

"Clark! Clark I'm here." She yelled as she fell on her knees next to Clark. The Kryptonite spear was pointed right above his heart and Batman could easily kill him in one motion. But she wouldn't let that happen, Bruce Wayne would have to kill her too. "Stop! Please! Stop!"

"Why did you say that name?" Batman repeated the spear still tight in his hands. There was a desperate and tortured look in his eyes and she didn't understand why Martha's name affected him so deeply.

"It's his mother's name. It's his mother's name." Irene repeated desperately and hear her words seemed to cause Bruce to hesitate. Standing up Irene pushed him back. "Get off of him."

Batman took a couple steps back removing his foot from Superman's chest. He still looked haunted as he threw the spear across the room.

Seeing that look on Bruce Wayne's face. That fear and grief, he suddenly looked like a lost child. It was a look that was only on his face for a second, but it was a look that made Irene realize exactly what had just happened.

It was easy to forget that billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne had a horrible tragedy when he was seven years old. When Thomas and Martha Wayne had been killed in an alleyway. It was hard for her not to feel sympathy for him. For the pain that clearly still haunted him.

Turning her attention back to Clark she helped him back on his feet. He was still a little weak, but he was quickly regaining his strength again.

Irene placed her hand on the side of his face taking a closer look at the cut on his cheek, but it was already starting to heal.

"I'm okay." Clark assured her as he took her hand before looking back at Batman, half of Bruce Wayne's face was exposed. It looked like turning the fight half of the metal helmet he was wearing had been damaged. At least he had the decency to look at little ashamed. "Luthor. He wanted your life for hers. She's losing time."

"There's another problem." Irene stated as she looked between the two of them. The truth was that they would be stronger together, that both of them needed to take down Luthor together. That was the only way. "The scout ship seems to be drawing power from the city. It's got to be Lex."

Bruce placed his hand on Clark's shoulder stopping his from taking a step forward. "They need you at that ship. I'll find her."

Clark immediately shook his head in response. "My mother needs me."

"I'll make you a promise. Martha won't die tonight." Bruce stated firmly, and Irene knew that this was a promise that he planned on keeping.

Clark must have seen it too as he nodded in approval. Suddenly it was like both men had come to an understanding. They both knew that whatever fight they just had was behind them. That there were people that needed them both.

Bruce Wayne wasted no time in leaving to find Martha. And in a matter of minutes her opinion on Bruce Wayne had changed, and she realized that Barbara had been right. That Irene might have been too quick to judge him.

"Stay here. You'll be safe." Clark said as he looked between Irene and Jimmy. "Thank you for coming."

"Of course buddy." Jimmy replied with a smile as he placed his hand on Clark's shoulder.

"Stay here." He repeated, and from his tone it was clear that he was worried.

Irene nodded knowing that it was best if she didn't get in the middle of whatever Luthor was doing. She would only be a liability and a distraction.

Besides her an Jimmy were stuck on the island without Clark. The helicopter had left and there were no ferrys that stopped at the island.

He leaned forward pressing a quick kiss on her lips before stepping back and disappearing into the night sky.

"I know this is the wrong time. I just have to say that this is super cool." Jimmy muttered as he looked down at his camera. He began looking through his pictures and Irene hadn't even realized that he had been taking them this whole time. "You look pretty cool in this one."

He turned the camera for her to see the screen. It was a picture of her pushing Bruce back, and Irene didn't find it as amusing as Jimmy did. He looked at her noticing her annoyance before lowering the camera.

She was too worried to find the picture amusing. Sure they had Batman on their side now but Irene didn't know if that was enough. Clark had gone up against Zod and Metallo, but somehow this felt different.

Somehow Lex Luthor felt more dangerous than anything else he had faced.

"Come on." Jimmy said as he walked across the room picking up the Kryptonite spear. "Damn this thing is heavy."

"What are you doing?" Irene questioned as she followed Jimmy out of the building.

Jimmy didn't say anything as he walked towards a lake not far from the prison. "One less thing that can hurt Clark."

Irene's eyes widened as she watched Jimmy throw the spear into the lake. They watched as the green glow from the Kryptonite slowly disappeared as the speak sunk deeper under the dark waters of the lake.

She wished that it was that easy or simple, but she knew better. It was never that easy.

Looking out across the bay they could see the lights from all the buildings in Metropolis flicker until everything went black.
