55 | No One Stays Good

Irene knew what it was like to fall through the sky. She remembered what it was like when she was trapped in that pod as she attempted to escape Zod's ship. She remembered the feeling of falling thousands of feet through the air. That had been much worse than this.

Clark was there to save her, he always was. This time she didn't know where he was but she had no doubt that he would come save her again.

And although Irene knew he would come, she also could help but feel terrified with every inch that she got closer to the ground. Closing her eyes Irene waited for anything or nothing at all. Whether it was the feeling of Clark's arms wrapping around her or everything ending she found that it really didn't matter.

She just wanted the terrible feeling of falling to stop. But she released an immediate sigh of relief when she felt a familiar pair of arms wrap around her. Slowly she opened her eyes again looking up to see Clark offering her a small apologetic smile.

He slowly put her feet on the floor ounce he had landed on the side walk.

Even if it was under terrible circumstances she was relieved to see him. Three days without hearing a word from him were difficult, but whatever he did in his time away seemed to have helped him. It was light some weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

Irene looked at him wishing that she could hug him, but they had already attracted attention of everyone on the street. After all Superman just saved someone after being missing for three days.

"You came back." Taking a step back Irene looked at him, at the shining emblem on his chest she knew just how wrong Lex Luthor and most of the world was.

"You doubted that I would?" He questioned looking at her in disbelief. Reaching out he gently brushed his hand to hers, knowing that he couldn't do more. Not with so many eyes on them. "I'm here. I'd never leave you."

She had to admit that there was a moment when he was gone that she had doubted that he would. Maybe it was cause she thought it would have been best if he just started a new life somewhere else. That he got away from everyone who wanted to hurt him.

"I think he has Martha." Irene told him knowing that they didn't have much time. If Luthor was willing to push Irene off the side of a building there was no knowing what he could do if he really had Martha.

Clark's face became serious again as he took a step back before flying back up. He was gone in an instant, straight to the rooftop of LexCorp, where Lex Luthor was waiting for him.

Admittedly she was anxious, still clueless about what Lex's grand plan was. The two of them had gone through so much and yet this get different. Lex's unpredictability made it all feel more dangerous.

It wasn't long before Superman had returned, the expression on his face spoke of just how heartbroken he was. For a moment Irene feared that he had just lost his mother, but it wasn't grief on his face. It was defeat, worry and anger all mixed into one.

"Irene. He has ma. I have to go to Gotham to convince him to help me."

"Who?" She questioned but the moment the word left her mouth she realized who he was referring to.

"Or he has to die." He continued struggling to say the words, almost like they were getting caught in his throat. Clark wasn't a killer and it seemed that maybe that's what Lex wanted to make him.

He wanted Clark to be a killer to prove just how dangerous he could be. But Irene knew Clark. And he would never hurt anyone, especially someone who didn't match his strength.

"Clark..." She whispered softly but he was already flying up, a look of defeat on his face. Like he had already accepted that he was going to fail.

"No one stays good in this world."

With those final words Superman was gone, off to look for Batman. And there was no way of knowing what exactly waited for him in Gotham. Bruce Wayne had made it clear how much he hated Superman, so would he help him?

Irene wasn't so sure. What she did know was that she couldn't stay back and do nothing. She had to go to Gotham too, because if Clark couldn't convince Bruce to help maybe she could.

Rushing towards the street she waved down a taxi, not wanting to waste anymore time. Everything would have been a lot easier if she had her phone which Anatoly had crushes with his bare hand.

"Daily Planet." She instructed as she closed the car door. Normally at this time of night there wasn't much traffic. Most people were off of work and already at home, but there was something wrong.

Turning on the taxi tv on the backseat she switched the channel to Metropolis 8.

"Soledad O' Brien is on the scene. Soledad, you're live on the air." What do you see?

"There's something happening at the ship. It's sending massive power surges." Soledad informed as behind her the site where one of the Kryptonian ships had crashed in Heroes Park could be seen.

It had been one of the larger ships that had been deemed both to expensive and impossible, so instead a large dome had been built around it. Now it sat a couple of feet away from the Superman statue, and would always be a reminder of what had happened that day.

But now electric surges could be seen coming from the dome, like maybe the ship had come alive again. Irene looked out the taxi window and realized that the lights in all the building in the city seemed to be flickering.

This was all Luthor's doing. It had to be part of his grand master plan against Superman. But it was still a mystery what exactly his plan was. The only thing that was certain was that people were going to get hurt.

Returning to the Daily Planet took a lot longer than Irene liked, but the second she paid the driver with the money that she luckily had in her coat she rushed inside.

"Perry!" Irene exclaimed, relieved that he hadn't gone home for the night. "I need a chopper to Gotham. Call the heliport."

Perry turned around looking at Irene like she had lost her mind, and maybe she had. But she needed him to do this for her.

"Chopper?" He repeated in disbelief. "We can barely afford a bicycle. You want to chase a story? Go to the ship. Superman's probably there already."

"Perry, it's not for a story." Irene urged not caring how desperate she must have sounded. At the moment she wasn't beneath begging for help.

Her editor-in-chief finally met her eyes. There seemed to be some understanding, like he could imagine exactly what was happening. For a moment Irene wondered if maybe Perry knew.

Irene wouldn't be surprised if he did. There was a time where Perry White was one of the best investigative journalists in the field, he had three Pulitzers to prove it. But if he did know he didn't say it.

"Chloe, get her a chopper to Gotham. And forget the heliport, put her on the god damn roof." Perry ordered and Irene immediately began running back towards the elevator. "On the roof, Irene!"

By the time that Irene had finally reached the roof the helicopter was already waiting for her. From this high up she could see the Bat-signal clearly, Clark was already there. And there was no knowing what was happening now.

"Wait!" Someone yelled behind her, and Irene was shocked to see Jimmy stepping onto the roof. He had his camera in hand, and he seemed to make no attempt to hide the nervous expression on his face. "I'm coming with you."

Irene shook her head not wanting to put her best friend in danger again. "Jimmy this going to be dangerous."

"I know." He replied confidently as he walked past her and got inside of the helicopter.

She knew that there was no changing his mind. Jimmy Olsen was just as stubborn as she was and he going to go with her no matter how dangerous the situation was.

"Where are we headed?" The pilot questioned once she and Jimmy were fully seated.

From the rooftop Irene could see that light up in the sky from across the bay. It was a signal that everyone in Gotham knew well. To most it once meant hope that Batman was going to save them, to the criminals in Gotham it meant that they should fear what was about to come.

Irene pointed at the large bar the illuminated the night sky knowing that was where Superman and Batman were going to be.

A/N: There's only 5 more chapters left! They are going to be a little more action packed as we head to the end.
