Chapter 8: The Hanging

Gabby and I woke up the next morning in a good mood. We were both equally more than happy to get some answers. I let her borrow some jeans and a hoodie. I also dressed casually. Some sweatpants and shirt. I grabbed my phone, keys, and an old digital camera.

Gabby looked at me weird when I put my small canon digital camera in my pocket. "A camera? What are we taking pictures of?"

"I'm not sure,"' I said. "Just in case."

I didn't want to tell her the truth on why I really brought the camera...I had my suspicions.

I ended up bringing the longboard down the road where I first met them, hoping they'd hear us. On the way down, I let Gabby ride a bit. She wasn't horrible either, until she ended up falling.

"Ow!" She cried out and held her knee. Sure enough she got hurt and was bleeding. I ran over to her.

"Is it ok-" I paused for a second. "That's a lot of blood."

"Are you two alright!" An old lady that had been watering her plants called from in her front yard. Quickly walking towards us, she pulled one thing out of her jacket pocket. It was a bandaid. She unwrapped it and put it over Gabby's knee.

The old woman smelled like cocoa butter and vanilla. She had short curly gray hair and light brown eyes. She wore baggy pants and wore a light blue jacket that had cool patches on it. There was a necklace with the African country on it.

"Might need some tissues for this, hun," she said in the most soft and comforting voice. "I had two grandkids. I always keep these on me." She took out another bandaid. "Guess I had an extra from some time in here. Come in. Let's wash this off."

We followed her into her house. Gabby stayed by the door trying to stop the bleeding from going down her leg with her finger. The lady came back with a cloth and peroxide. Gabby lifted the bandaid while the women sprayed her knee then wiped the access blood.

"My, my you two are so beautiful," she smiled then lead us to the bathroom to clean up. Her house was a small but comfy one. One of those places that was full of furniture and knickknacks. Lots of photos on the wall. Pinecone scented candles burning somewhere. You could smell bread in the oven. It was really cute.

"You two can call me, Old Williams," she said before walking out the door. Me and Gabby followed her to the living room where she gestured us into the living room.

"I'm Esther and this is my friend, Gabby." I told her. "I just moved her on Main Street."

"The house..." she paused and looked at me with wide eyes. She began slowly pointing towards the window. "up the road there?" She had this confused look on her face. "Oh no. Oh no, you have to go-"

"Wait-" I said standing up and looking at the picture on the wall. I saw the two twins. Marques and Keith?"

Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped. "How do you know them?" She asked then stood up. I almost had to catch her because she seemed to got dizzy.

"Ms. Williams!" I was about to catch her.

"Get away from me," she stumbled to the side. "Who are you? How do you know them?"

"What?" I said, confused. "They right next to you! I walked outside to show her and Gabby."

I pointed to the house and to my complete horror-to my shock there was no house. Just an empty space with nothing but dirt from where a house used to be.

"Marquess and Keith are dead," she said. "Have been for years."

"Weren't they your...grandkids?" I asked.

She took a few steps back slowly. "Child, you and your family need to leave that house. It's no good." She began looking around. "You'll go crazy. Insane. You'll go mad."

She was inside the house by now, locking the screen door but still looking at us. "You'll go crazy. Insane. You'll go mad!"

She slammed the door.

Gabby grabbed my hand. "We need to get away from here." She picked up the longboard and we walked back across the street. The two of us looked up at the empty space beside Ms. William's house.

"I can't believe this," I said. "There was a house there before, Gabby. I've seen it."

I quickly took out my camera and began taking pictures of the spot. The dirt and the empty space around it. 2 pictures. 4. 10. 20. Until Gabby asked me to stop.

"That's enough," she said. "I feel scared, can we go back to the house?"

I didn't say anything back to her, just quickly turned on the camera and looked at the pictures. All of them were normal. Each one except the last photo. The last one made me drop the camera. Gabby picked up and and I grabbed it before she could see it.

"I don't think you should look at this," I shook my head.

Gabby shook her head. "No, show me!" She took it back. She grabbed her mouth with her hand and nearly cried out in shock.

The photo was Marquees and Keith inside of a house hanging by their neck on their own chandelier and laying dead on the floor was a man and women that I assumed to be there father.

"What happened to them?" I whispered.
