Chapter 7: Lies

Mom and dad ended up calling me downstairs for dinner. I was hoping it wouldn't have anything to do with what happened with Gabby and Kass. I was wrong though. As soon as I got downstairs mom and dad had the most annoyed look on their face. Kass was sitting in a chair pretend cleaning her nails and doing her best not to smile. She wanted me to get in trouble, I could tell.

"What is with you?" My mother walked from the doorway into the kitchen towards me. Dad followed behind her. "Esther, now is not the time to be playing tricks on your sister or your friends. I really liked that you had someone over. Why play a prank on them?" She said.

I wanted to melt into the floor right then and there. This ruined any chance I had to bring up a house cleansing or a possibility that there was negative energy in the house. Just my luck.

"Mom," I sighed. "dad. It wasn't-"

"Bullshit!" Kass yelled. She got up and looked at me.

"Kassandra," dad shook his head at her. "no use for the language."

"She needs to grow up," Kass continued. She was really flustered up. I could tell because her face was turning pink and she wanted to yell but she kept stopping herself. As a sibling, I knew she wasn't just angry at me but at something else.

"Alright, fine," I said then turned to mom. "I found out that people died here. This house was literally rebuilt and fixed up. No one told me!"

Dad stepped in. He was angry. I could tell because he grabbed his beard, sighed then shot me a look. "That doesn't mean scare people and play pranks, Esther."

"You didn't even tell us that, dad!" I realized I yelled that to him, but I was upset. They were acting like it wasn't possible but also hiding facts.

"Someone died here?" Kass's jaw dropped. "That's gross."

Mom rolled her eyes. "Seriously," she eyed my father as if he said the worst thing. She stormed off way from us and to her bedroom. Dad didn't seem to want to talk to us anymore so he went outside.

Me and Kassandra eyed each other. I didn't even know what to say to her. I walked away and went into my room. I was too upset to play guitar so I just laid in bed. I saw a few text messages and missed calls from Gabby. That last text message was her saying that she was coming over and that she wanted to tell me something. I told her to come over.

Gabby sat down on my bed. She was so pale like she had seen a ghost and  she had her hands crossed. I didn't know what to say to her because she seemed so traumatized. I sat next too her and placed my hand on her shoulder.

"Everything...okay?" I asked her.

She looked at me with almost teary eyes. Before letting out a deep sigh, she cried. "I had a scary dream. It was so real," she covered her eyes. I was about to hug her but she continued. "I couldn't move in my dream. I watched..." she choked on her words. "I watched this thing pull your eyes out of your socket."

"Gabby-"

She opened her hand and showed me a piece of paper. I read it and when I saw it, I couldn't believe it said.

You're next.

The paper said.

"What is this?" I asked her.

She shrugged and shook her head. "I woke up with is in my hand." She said. "My mom didn't believe me."

I wanted to say welcome to my world. But I didn't. Gabby was in serious distress. She was shaking uncontrollable. "I believe you," she whimpered while looking up at me. "I'm sorry I didn't. I'm so scared."

I took the paper and crumbled it up. "You're going to be okay," I said. "We'll find out what's going on."

"How?" Gabby asked me.

I thought about it for a second then I had an idea. "The boys!" I said to her. "I saw them when we were at the creek. We can ask them for their help."

"The boys?" She said with a confused look on her face.

I told her about the two twins I had met. She got some hope and wiped her tears. "Yeah, we can ask them!"

"Perfect!" I said. "It's late now but we can talk to them tomorrow.

She made a sad face. "Can I spend the night here?" She asked.

I nodded. "Of course."

"I'm too shook up to be alone."

I understood her. I was too. Angry, confused, and a little scared. The whole thing was frightening but I remained calm. I didn't know what was up or why all of this started happening suddenly but I felt confident there was an explanation.

Suddenly. I had an idea.

"Gabby..." I smiled. "I'm going to introduce you to the twins."

"The ones I couldn't see in the woods?" She asked.

I nodded. "Exactly."

"We'll go tomorrow!" I told her.
