[40] Time

CHAPTER 40- Time

Wilmer's POV

I looked out the window of the plane and wiped at my eyes again. I have no family, my wife hates me, my daughter must think I'm a pig. I didn't want Demi to get hurt in this. I honestly thought that Maria was lying when she told me that I have a daughter. I checked my phone again, unsurprisingly there was nothing from Demi. I'm on a plane to New York to go meet my daughter, who I had out of an affair with a woman who stole the life out of the woman I love. It was nerve wracking, and I tried not to hate them, but it was nearly impossible. Instead of blaming me, I blamed Maria. Why did she have to contact me? Why couldn't she just leave me alone and live our lives separately. If it weren't for her Demi and I would still be okay. If it weren't for her I would be sure of my marriage.

I took a deep breath and stared at the wooden door in front of me. I'd called Demi when I landed and when I got to the house but it wasn't surprising when she didn't answer. So, I knocked.

"Who is it?" A woman's voice called.

"It's Wilmer."

The door opened immediately and I stared into the eyes of Maria Estalla. The woman I cheated on my wife with eighteen years ago.

"Wilmer! Hi! I'm so happy you decided to come!" She kissed my cheek as my body remained unmoving. "It's nice to see you! Alicia is so excited!"

I forced a smile, and followed her into the dingy apartment. It was obvious that they were struggling financially and I couldn't help but wonder if this was the point of the visit.

"Alicia! Come down here!" I heard a door open upstairs and a loud voice yelled down.

"WHAT MA?" Maria sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Alicia come down for a minute! There's someone I want you to meet!"

I held my breath as a figure walked down the stairs and came into the light. I had to hold in my gasp, she looked exactly like me. the same skin tone, thick lips and dark brown eyes.

"Who're you?" She said in a tough voice that had obviously been used alot in the streets of New York City.

"Alicia sweetie is this Wilmer. He's the man I told you about. He's your father." My eyes widened at Maria's blunt statement. I thought Alicia had known I was her father. the teenager was looking at me with disgust.

"You can go now. I don't wanna talk to you. You fucking left my mom and she had me." Her eyes were hateful and Maria gasped.

"Alicia! Don't be rude!"

She barked a laugh, "What's he gonna do? Ground me? Beat me?"

I frowned, and couldn't help but compare her to Izzy at home, they were so different, Izzy was everything I wanted in a daughter, but this girl... She'd obviously been through alot, but I hadn't expected this.

"Go upstairs Alicia. Wilmer and I have to talk."

The teenager smirked at me and disappeared into the dark hallway. Maria sighed and rubbed her face.

"Okay so I lied to get you here Alicia didn't know you were coming."

I rolled my eyes, "Right. So why did you ask me to come here?"

She looked up, "She needs to go to college Wilmer. I can't provide that for her."

I could feel my wallet grow heavier in my pocket.

"Maria... I don't know-"

"She's your daughter Wilmer. She needs to get educated so she doesn't become like me. Please."

I sighed, and took out my checkbook, "How much."

Maria bit her lip, "Ten thousand."

As I put the pen to the paper a loud boom sounded, and the door was broken down.

"NO!" Maria screamed, and I felt myself being tackled to the ground along with Maria next to me.

"What the fuck?!" I stopped struggling against the officer's hold, not wanting to get in more trouble. "Maria what the fuck is this?!"

She smiled evilly, "Sorry."

"What do you mean I can't leave?! I didn't do anything!" I said angrily to the officer outside of the cell. The handcuffs were digging into my wrists and I was so confused. No one had told me anything. Finally, a door opened and an officer walked in.

"Mr.Valdramma. I'm Officer Keys."

I forced a smile, "Hi."

He sighed, "Maria Estalla is a long time con artist. We've been looking for her for awhile. You being in her presence and about to write a check is not good for you. Guilty by association. It's a two year sentence, but five hundred bail."

I groaned, "But I didn't do anything! She told me I was the father of her teenage daughter so I came down to meet her. I had no idea she was a con artist!"

The cop raised an eyebrow, "How would you be able to have a kid with her?"

I looked down, "I slept with her eighteen years ago."

He nodded, "How long've you been married?"

I closed my eyes, "Nineteen years."

The cop chuckled, "Wow. You really are an asshole. I'll let you get that phone call now but if I were you, I wouldn't call your wife. She's probably filing for divorce right now."

I felt my heart break at the thought of it, "Please don't say that to me."

He shrugged, "One more thing, Maria doesn't have a daughter. She's done this exact con many times. College tuition, necessary surgery, it's all her tricks."

My eyes widened as did my smile, "Oh my God that's such a relief. Thank you."

He led me over to the phone booth where I slowly dialed Demi's number, desperately praying she would pick up.

"Hello?" I nearly dropped the phone as Demi's voice rang through it.

"Demi it's me-"

"Wilmer you need to stop fucking calling me."

"Demi baby please don't hang up I need you to listen to me. Can you do that?"

She hesitated, "Fine. You have two minutes."

I took a deep breath, and the cop next to me hit my shoulder, "You need to hurry up. Thirty second phone calls."

"Demi I need you to come to New York."

"Are you fucking kidding me?! I'm not going anywhere near that bitch unless you want me to get arrested for murder."

I smiled, Demi's still Demi.

"Baby I'm in jail. I need you to come here. Please I'll explain everything but just come here I'm at the 12th precinct. I love you so much baby it's all gonna be okay."

I could hear her shallow breathing through the phone, "Demi I love you and I need you right now. I wouldn't ask if it weren't important. Please."

"Wilmer... I'm sorry."

The dial tone rang through the phone and I stared at it blankly, not believing that she just hung up.

"Don't worry brother. She'll come." The cop next to me said with a smile. "She'll come."

~*~

"Aye! Valdramma! Let's go." I got up, not believing my ears as the guard unlocked the handcuffs and I rubbed my sore wrists.

"What's going on?"

He led me to the front of the police station, "You're free to go."

I looked to where he pointed and saw Demi standing there, arms crossed and still extremely pissed off.

"Hermosa... you came."

She held up her hand, "Wilmer I came because I didn't want Izzy's dad rotting in jail. That's it."

I furrowed my brow, "What are you talking about?"

Demi raised her glasses and looked into my eyes. I could see the bags under them along with the red-tinge that came with lot's of crying.

"I want a divorce."
