Chapter 6
Louis had nothing to do in the morning. He had his riding lesson in the late afternoon but did not have anything to keep him occupied until then. He decided to pay Harry a visit down at the bakery. Before Louis could leave the castle, King Niall stopped him. He asked Louis when he wishes to get married to Harry.
"I have not proposed to him yet." Louis admitted.
"Well, why the hell not?" Niall huffed.
"Isn't it a bit too abrupt?" Louis questioned. "I've only known him for a couple days. Plus, with the recent killing in the castle, it is not exactly the ideal time to have a wedding."
"What nonsense!" Niall exclaimed. "Louis, there is no better time to marry Harry."
Louis thought about it. Niall remarked, "Better hurry it up before someone else comes along and steals your man."
"I have not even gotten a ring yet." Louis said.
"Fret not." Niall spoke. He instructed Louis to open his palm. Niall dropped two rings in the middle of Louis' hand. Louis stared at them. He recognised them as the King and Queen's wedding bands. They had cost a fortune, or so Louis had heard. The rings were made with precious metals and carefully handmade. The diamond was shining brilliantly despite its age. Louis wondered if it had been polished recently.
Louis demurred, "But these are y-"
"Yours." Niall insisted, interrupting Louis. Niall pushed Louis' fingers gently so that they curled into fists, with the rings inside. Louis locked eyes with Niall. Niall smiled and nodded. Louis thanked him.
Niall sauntered down the corridor to his throne room. Louis got into the carriage and set off to find Harry.
"Aww, Lou! You came just to see me?" Harry gushed in an exaggerated manner when Louis stepped into the bakery.
"No, I came here to get a cake." Louis said sarcastically but he could use a sweet treat so he went along with his fib. "That one, please." Louis requested, pointing at a cake in the display. It was a circular cake, topped with chocolate frosting. The icing had a light dusting of confectioner's sugar. Louis began to salivate at the sight of it but quickly licked his lips and swallowed so nobody would notice.
Coins clattered against the countertop as Louis dropped them out of his hand to pay for the cake. Harry shook his head and said, "Don't bother with the money. It's on the house."
Louis pushed the money towards Harry. The small metal discs grated against the surface of the counter as Louis moved it. Louis insisted on paying for the cake.
Harry snatched up the coins and put them in Louis' hand. His fingers brushed against Louis' palm as he did so. "I said, 'It's on the house.'" Harry repeated himself.
"I can't take it for free." Louis stood his ground firmly. Harry rolled his eyes.
Harry leaned over the counter and kissed Louis on the mouth. He cupped Louis' face, pulling the prince closer. "There. That's your payment." Harry said when their lips parted. Harry was going to get the box that the cake was sitting in to pass it to Louis but Louis darted behind the counter and grabbed Harry by the waist.
"Wait, I haven't left a tip!" Louis shouted. He tiptoed so that his face could reach upwards. His lips were pushed against Harry's. Both his eyes were closed. Harry picked Louis up by the waist so Louis did not have to stand on his tippy toes throughout the kiss. Louis' legs hung in mid air. Louis held Harry's head, kissing him passionately. Their chests were pressed against one another's. Louis felt comfortable in Harry's warmth.
"Harry, is that Louis?" Both boys heard someone call out. Harry's dad walked out through floral curtains, from the back of the bakery. Harry set Louis back down in the ground. Harry's face turned bright pink at the realisation that he had been caught making out with a boy by his dad. Louis noticed Harry's embarrassment and bit his lip to stifle his giggles. He did not hide his laughs very well. A look of affection formed on his face as he smiled fondly at Harry.
"Oh, your highness!" Harry's dad blurted. He quickly bowed in politeness. He pulled Harry to the corner of the bakery. "Harry, when you said that you met a nice boy named Louis, you could have specified that he was the prince." Harry's dad whispered through gritted teeth. "I would have baked a cake specially for him.
"That will not be necessary." Louis overheard their conversation and said. He would not be able to finish the cake by himself and had barely anyone to share it with, besides his dad and, maybe, Modeste. In fact, he had doubt about being able to finish the cake that he picked out. Besides, Harry is giving him the cake for no cost. Louis should not be greedy.
Louis stuck his right hand out to shake Harry's dad's. Harry's dad took Louis' hand firmly in his, but not squeezing too tightly, and shook it. "The name is Liam," Harry's dad introduced himself. He excused himself for a moment. Liam walked through the curtains and yelled up the staircase that was behind the wall.
"ZAYNIE, GET YOURSELF DOWN HERE!" Liam's voice resonated up the stairs.
"Do I have to?" Someone from upstairs whined. Liam sighed deeply.
"Yes, you do." Liam uttered. He turned to Louis and said. "Hold on, my husband is coming down VERY, VERY SLOWLY!" Liam raised his voice on the last three words and used a passive aggressive tone.
"Oh, piss off!" Zayn shouted. "And quit calling me, 'Zaynie'. It's embarrassing."
Louis held back his laughter.
"Harry isn't our biological son." Liam stated the obvious. "That wouldn't be a problem with you, I believe." Louis nodded.
Zayn appeared through the curtain. His eyes widened when he saw the prince. He yanked Liam behind the curtains by the elbow. Muffled arguing was heard from where Louis and Harry were standing.
"Harry did not mention that Louis was the prince!" Zayn whisper-shouted.
"That's what I said!" Liam responded.
There was a short pause before Zayn gasped. "What if he executes us for being gay?"
Louis interrupted their conversation, "Sorry to eavesdrop but I've talked to my dad about it and I believe he's removing the law against same-sex marriage. If he doesn't, it'd be the first thing to go when I reign."
"You hear that babe? We could be actually married." Zayn rejoiced, hugging Liam and jumping up and down. Louis left them to have their mini celebration.
"So, you talk to your parents about me?" Louis smirked at Harry. Harry blushed furiously.
"Oh, he talks about you a lot!" Zayn poked his head through the curtains and commented. Harry's face turned even redder.
"Yeah. He has not shut up since three days ago." Liam added.
"Dad!" Harry cried in embarrassment. Both his parents laughed.
Liam took over Harry's shift to let him hang out with Louis in his room, which was on the second storey of the shophouse. Harry gave Liam a hug and thanked him before sprinting up the staircase to Louis, who was already halfway up the stairs.
Zayn nudged Liam and whispered, "How long do you think before they start banging?"
"I give it a month." Liam betted. "Wait, but just in case," Liam said. He cupped his hands around his mouth and hollered, "Keep it down if you're doing anything up there!"
"I don't say anything when you and Dad do it." Harry taunted.
"Oh please! You sleep like a baby. You don't hear anything." Zayn scoffed.
"You don't even hear me when I tell you to do the dishes." Liam added. "In fact, there are some pans in the sink that needs washing."
"Yeah, you're right. I can't hear you." Harry agreed sarcastically and went into his room.
Louis was already in Harry's room, sitting on the bed with his legs crossed. "You know, when you said that your room was smaller than my bed, I didn't really believe you." Louis commented. Harry's single bed fit from wall to wall. Other than the bed, there was also a small closet. That was about it. A pile of clothes sat unfolded at the end of the bed. Louis recognised his jacket, tossed on top of the pile.
"Nice to know you've been treating my jacket well!" Louis sniggered.
"Sorry," Harry uttered, taking a seat on his bed. "Uh- You can have it back if you want."
"Nah. Keep it. I think it looks good on you." Louis commented. He did think that Harry looked dashing in the garment, except for the fact that it was too small due to their difference in size. However, Louis would not admit that, to avoid being called tiny again.
"Sorry about my folks, Lou. We're very open about sex." Harry laughed."They're embarrassing but parents will be parents, you know?"
Louis shrugged. He smiled and asked, "Did you just call me 'Lou'?"
"Yes. If you don't like it, then too bad!" Harry taunted. "Because I'll be calling you 'Lou' forever and ever."
"That's fine by me," Louis chirped, "because that means you'll have to be with me forever and ever."
The mewling of a cat was heard. Louis turned around and saw a kitten jump from the window sill onto Harry's lap. It curled up and closed it eyes. The cat purred softly as Harry stroked its fur gently with his fingers.
"Who's that?" Louis asked about the cat.
"She doesn't have a name but she comes through that window to visit me very often." Harry said.
Louis reached out to pet the young feline. The cat yelped and swiped her claw at Louis to scratch him. Thankfully, Louis retracted his hand fast enough to avoid the sharp nails of the cat.
"Rude!" Louis remarked. Harry laughed uncontrollably. The cat reverted back to laying peacefully on Harry's crossed legs. Louis scorned at the cat.
"You jealous or something?" Harry teased. Louis' frown fell to a neutral expression.
"I am not." Louis turned his nose to face the ceiling. Harry diverted his attention to the cat. The kitten nibbled his fingers in affection.
"Okay, yes, I am." Louis blurted out. "Shoo, kitty! Get your own man. This one is mine." The cat hissed and darted out the window.
"Wow, I've been your boyfriend for a day and you're already so possessive!" Harry teased jocosely. Louis rolled his eyes. Harry ruffled the hair on Louis' head. A strand of hair hung loosely in Louis' face. Louis blew upward sharply to move it away. Harry playfully disheveled Louis' hair again.
"I hate you so much." Louis grumbled.
"Shut up. You love me." Harry giggled and poked Louis' cheek. Louis stuck his tongue out childishly.
"And I love you back." Harry said and kissed Louis.
