Chapter 15

Harry's eyes lost its lovely green colour as his pupils dilated and glowed bright red. His curly locks receded into his skull, only to be replaced with a strip of black fur from the centre of his forehead down to the back of his neck. A pale green colour took over the human colour of Harry's skin. Harry stood on his feet on the mattress as his already long legs extended. His height had doubled in the past few seconds.

Harry snarled at Louis, who fell backwards in fright. "Haz?" Louis called out. His lower lip trembled. "Hazza!" Louis squalled. What a fool he was to think he could conjure the boy out from the vicious beast!

"Harry, please, stop it!" Louis' voice quavered. Harry growled threateningly. A high-pitched shriek escaped from Louis' lips. Louis scrambled to his feet and bolted out of the room. Harry followed closely behind. His tall body slammed into the wall as he ran around corner, chasing after Louis. He recovered from the impact quickly, continuing his pursuit of the prince who was so desperate to get away.

Louis grabbed a sword from the assembly of a knight's outfit, displayed in the corridor. "En garde!" Louis shouted as he pointed the weapon at Harry. Harry stared at the shiny blade for a moment with his blood red pupils. He swiped the sword from Louis' hand, clenching the blade in his two rows of razor-sharp fangs. Harry flung the sword onto the floor behind him. It landed on the ground with a sharp metallic noise.

"Not en garde. Definitely not en garde!" Louis cried as he turned around and took to his heels. His heart rate rose. Louis did not turn around to see if the monster was on his tail but by judging from the noise created behind him, Louis did not have to. Harry collided into decorations that lined the side of the corridor. Exquisite vases toppled and crashed into each other, falling like dominos and smashing into smithereens as they hit the hard floor. One would think that with so many obstacles, Harry would have a hard time catching up to Louis but the gap between them was not getting any wider.

Louis ran out of the castle. The cold night air hit his face. Louis did not look where he was going. He knew that as long as he was out of Harry's reach, he would be fine. Louis found himself headed straight for the forest. It was a bad idea to go in there but it was too late to turn and change his path, considering the giant demon that was hot on his heels.

Darkness surrounded Louis. "If I can't see him, he can't see me, right?" Louis thought to himself silently as he crept deeper into the woods. The canopy of leaves blocked all light. Any direction Louis turned, all he saw was black. He exhaled in relief.

Louis leaned against something warm and wet. He turned around to see two red dots glaring at him. "Speak of the devil." Louis muttered as he pushed his way past trees that grew in the most inconvenient of ways. Thick, sturdy roots snaked along the forest floor, waiting to be tripped over by the careless prince.

Surely enough, Louis' foot was caught in a root. He collapsed onto the ground, landing on his front. Louis held his hands out but they were little help in breaking his fall. Louis moaned in pain. Harry approached the prince who was lying helpless.

Louis scrambled to his feet. Harry swiped a hand at Louis. Louis ducked. Harry missed but hit the trunk of a tree. The tree snapped in half like a twig. The upper half of the broken tree slammed onto the ground, mere centimetres away from Louis. A loud boom echoed.

Harry lunged onto Louis, pinning the prince to the ground. Louis squirmed as the white drool foaming in the demon's mouth dripped down, hanging uncomfortably close to his face. Louis' breathing was heavy. His chest was constrained by the long fingers of the monster. Harry picked Louis up, holding the small boy with one hand.

Louis spotted a lamp in the distance. In the darkness of the night, it looked like the sun. Louis had found a light at the end of a tunnel. Louis bit the hand that held him. Harry released hold immediately. Louis landed on his front. He pushed his hands against the soil, getting himself up on his feet. Louis had scraped his knees during the fall. Blood ran down his calf. Louis yelled as he approached the man holding the lamp, "Father, help!"

Niall whipped his sword out of its scabbard. He let out a throaty battle cry as he thrusted the blade into the breast of the demon with no hesitation. Harry screeched in piercing agony. He tossed his head back as he roared. Harry lumbered away with the sword, speared in his chest. Blood dripped onto the ground as he walked.

"Louis, are you hurt?" Niall asked.

Louis stared blankly at Harry as he walked away. "Yes, I am hurt." Louis answered Niall's question. Louis' knees were bleeding profusely and his body ached like crazy but none of that compared to the pain he felt in his heart.

"It's Harry." Louis mumbled.

"What?" Niall was confused.

"The demon is Harry. He transformed. I don't even know how he did it but he did. Harry is the demon!" Louis rambled. "Father, I'm so sorry that I accused you."

"It's okay, Louis." Niall patted Louis' shoulder. "Let's get you back to the castle so that we can dress up your wounds."

"Don't mind me for asking, but what are you doing out so late in the forest?" Louis questioned.

"Come here." Niall gestured for Louis to follow him.

"Where are we going?" Louis asked.

"Not far." Niall responded. He stopped at a big oak tree. He held the lamp up to illuminate the trunk. On the bark, there was a carving of the king and queen's names. A heart was carved around the names.

"Your mother and I used to come here all the time when we were young." Niall mentioned. "I don't know why but she always preferred the dark of the night."

"Yeah," Louis chuckled.

"I miss her." Niall muttered.

"I miss her too." Louis sighed, leaning his weight on a hard object in the dark.

"Louis, don't sit on that." Niall scolded. "That's your mum's grave."

Louis got up and realised he had been sitting on a headstone. He rarely visited his mother's grave. It made him upset when he did so he only went on special occasions, like her birthday.

"Louis, what are you looking at?" Niall asked, noticing Louis staring into the distance.

"Nothing." Louis shook his head. "Let's go back home." The king and the prince headed back into the palace.

At dawn, Harry returned to the castle from the forest. In his hand, he dragged the sword he had been stabbed with, with its blade soaked in blood. Harry pressed a hand over his wound on his chest. His face was twisted in agony.

Louis glared at Harry. Harry hobbled towards the prince. "Come no closer," Louis warned, "Or there'll be consequences." Harry stopped in his tracks.

"Put the weapon down." Louis instructed. Harry obeyed the command and rested the king's knife at his feet.

"Why did you attack me?" Louis asked.

"Lou-" Harry tried to speak but Louis butted in. "Don't call me that." Louis spat. "Call me 'your highness'."

Harry continued, "Your highness, I didn't mean to, I promise. I would never hurt you. It's just, when I don't sleep by 8, I turn into this monster."

"That's why Modeste told me not to stay up late, isn't it?" Louis asked. Harry nodded hesitantly. Louis raged, "You knew. You knew you were a demon. You kept it from me. You lied to me. Was that your reason for coming here? So you can murder me?"

Harry teared up. "Your highness," Harry cried. His voice was shaky. "I didn't come here to hurt you. I love you."

"Save your tears and your words. They're probably fake anyways." Louis said coldly. Harry did not stop. Harry hugged Louis and sobbed.

"Harry, stop." Louis backed away uncomfortably. Harry leaned onto his chest and held Louis tightly.

"Just let me say I'm sorry because I am." Harry sobbed but Louis doubted the sincerity of Harry's words.

"Let go of me." Louis insisted. He pushed the boy off him. Harry fell onto the floor. Louis stared down at him. "You and your family will be banished from the kingdom." Louis declared.

"No," Harry protested. "My dads are innocent. They did nothing wrong. They have no clue about what I become. It's not fair on them."

"Fine, your parents get to stay," Louis decided to be empathetic. "But you shall leave before sundown."

"That's in less than twelve hours!" Harry cried.

"Do I look like I care?" Louis' voice was lacking emotion. Harry swallowed a lump in his throat. A tired sigh left Harry's lips. He accepted his fate. He decided to leave without kicking up a fuss.

With that, Harry left the palace.

I'm a friend, your friend. We can stay up late together. We'll stay up very late. In fact, I think we'll stay up all night.
