23. That Familar Blue and White Cap
"I'm going fishing! Wish me some good fishies!" AJ waves everyone goodbye as Rosie followed behind him. You're glad he listened to take her with him. Even though it took a little convincing. You wave back, putting your hands in your pants pockets and looking around. The place was nicely cleaned up. Bags of food littering the tables, newly found weapons, Utensils and dishes that Omar insisted they should grab on a supply run not too long ago, even a few papers filled with Tenn's drawings were there.
It had been a good few weeks, the weather was a lot nicer and even though there weren't any singing birds, the sound of crows worked the same way and honestly made it a little more comforting. There weren't as many walkers nearby as before, but everyone still had to be careful.
Clementine walked outside, well.. used her crutches to get outside shortly after AJ left. You don't think you were ever going to get used to seeing her without a leg. Seemed not even a few days ago that she was running, walking, climbing and stuff of the sort. But she was alive. That's all that mattered.
"Oi!" You turn, looking at Willy who waved at you from his current spot next to Omar. He gestured you to come over, so you did. "Whatcha need Willster." He shakes his head, "Don't call me that." He says, trying his best to act annoyed. Though, the small smile from him gave it away that he didn't care. "Mitch taught me how to carve! And I made this! It's a horse!" He shows you a very pointy stick. You snicker and pat his back, "Good job bud. Man.. that's some horse you got there." He rolls his eyes, trying to focus back on his work as you try to calm your laugh. You look glance around quickly, looking for that a specific someone. "Yo, Will." He stops what he's doing to look at you, "Hm?" He sets down his stuff for a second to brush his pants off from the wood chips. "You seen Mitch? Haven't seen em all day." He just shrugs, "I.. THINK he's at the uh— greenhouse? Ruby and Violet went too. Ruby wanted more of that weird plant stuff and Violet just tagged along." You nod, saying your goodbyes to him and waving to Omar to make your way to the greenhouse.
Though you stop for a minute, seeing Clementine trying to make her way up the stairs. Louis wasn't yet in sight so you went over to help her instead. She didn't exactly need help really but it doesn't hurt to be there just in case. She giggles once she makes it to the top of the small amount of stairs. "Thanks." You nod, "Need to go up the rest of the stairs inside?" She shakes her head after barely thinking for a second, "Nope! Louis told me if I need him he'll probably be in the piano room." You make a small 'Ah' noise. Before you go, Clementine quickly tells you to wait, so you do. "I appreciate you coming back for me and AJ, ya know?" You give her a small smile and pat her head, grimacing a bit once you remember again that she used to wear that original blue and white hat. You don't say anything about it, deciding to not remind her. You wave to her as she makes her way to the piano room and then you finally start making your way to the greenhouse. Hopefully Violets doing well, you haven't talked to her in a few days due to her having to stay in bed.
It didn't take long to get there, due to nobody else approaching you and the pathway is quite short. The greenhouse door was wide open and when you peak inside, only Violet and Ruby are there looking through the plants. The greenhouse looked actually clean this time, nothing was overgrown, the glass looked cleaner, the floors weren't littered with dirt and walker bodies.
Ruby was the first to notice you, obviously, and said hello. You greet her as well, watching sadly as Violet asks who's there. She's getting her vision back slowly, but it isn't great. She can make out figures from what you heard. Violet smiles once Ruby says it was you and stumbles over, looking for you. You cut her searching off by running up to her and hugging her tightly, she instantly reacted by squeezing you back.
"I haven't seen— er— heard from you in so long!" She stammers happily, giving a toothy grin. You decide to not acknowledge her little mess up in the sentence and just mess with her hair, "Yeah, it's been a while. Wish I could've visited you sooner Vi." You look around once again, "Mitch in the lab?" She nods, making a gesture with her hand. "Idiot said he needed to see if there was anything else useful in there since he's been "procrastinating" his exploration these last few weeks." You nod, giving her a pat on the shoulder and directing her back to Ruby, placing her hand on Ruby's shoulder so she knows who's there.
"And how are you doin' on this fine day Miss Ruby?" The whole sentence was a bit of a joke, but Ruby just rolled her eyes and shrugged, "Actually I'm pretty good. These plants have been giving the soups more flavor, supply runs are a lot more successful, Aasim—" She tucks a strand of her loose hair behind her ear and chuckles a little bit. You raise a brow and smirk as she smacks your shoulder, "Aasim has been so sweet to me since the start of our relationship." You let out a 'Hell yeah!' And give her a high five. "If he wasn't being nice I would've fed him to the walkers." She shakes her head, an obvious grin on her face. "Yeah well not today, unfortunately." She jokingly whispers the last part. You both snicker, you even hear Violet let out a laugh next to you.
Footsteps approaching gather everyone's attention. "Thought you wanted to stay within the sight of the school today? What's the occasion?" Mitch smiles at you, "Eh, thought I'd visit my idiotic boyfriend to see what his stupid ass is up to." He fake gasps, putting a hand over his heart dramatically. "How rude of you! Ain't you the one who almost died the other day because you decided to play whack-a-walker with Louis?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." You shift your weight on your feet. He sighs, using a cloth to wipe his hands off. "But anyway, just wanted to know what you're up to." He motions you to follow him into the lab, so you do. The place was nicely set up, just as the other room was. "You've done a lot within a short amount of time." He moves the igniter on one of the tables, the one you recognize was used before the fight of your lives. "Thought I'd pretty it up a bit. Even in my eyes it was too ugly for me."
"Damn." He acknowledges your mutter immediately, "What? I didn't call you ugly." He grins, "I know, but ain't that a little harsh? Even for this place? Wasn't used in years." He shrugs uttering something about it not mattering. And you could agree on that. After a moment, he decided to change the subject, "I was at first looking for more propane tanks. But then when there wasn't any, I decided to look for other things and tidy this old place up. I'll probably be here a lot since I like it, but not too often. Honestly feel like I'm working a whole ass scientist job in here." You silently agree, looking over to the spot next to the door where Mrs. Martin was found a while back. Certainly you felt bad for not burying her, but Ruby didn't seem to hold it against you all for too long.
The rest of the few minutes were silent, with Mitch just doing god knows what while you stood there. You weren't sure what to do since everyone was pretty much busy. "You going to come out to the courtyard soon?" Mitch looked up at you for a brief moment before going back to what he was working on. And it seemed to look like an explosive. "In a little bit, sure. Why not?" You nod, walking over to him and giving him a kiss on his cheek. He chuckles, grabbing your chin and gives you a quick peck on your lips. "See you in a little bit." He nods as you exit the room, saying your goodbyes to Violet and Ruby on your way out.
You decided to sit and wait for AJ to come back by sitting at one of the tables. Louis was already outside, and sitting with you. He went on about how Clem would come outside soon and the fact that he was given the map of the place by her. "During one of the supply runs, Aasim found some people. Wanted to know if you wanted to come." You shrug, "Who else is coming?" Louis looks around quickly, "If I can get maybe Willy in place of Violet, Aasim is obviously coming, and I was hoping you. Maybe Mitch could come if he decides Willy shouldn't." He grins, "Maybe he'll join us for you." He winks, you're close to smacking his head and it was last minute decision but you decide to. "Ow!" He grumbles, "Focus on your own relationship, Lou." He snickers a bit, going back to talking about the map.
You watch as people made their way outside the gate, including Willy, Ruby who returned from the greenhouse with Violet, Aasim, and Omar. Louis mentioned he was going to go keep watch in a moment but decided to talk with you first. After a little while, he eventually did leave to go do that. Violet decided to keep you company in the meantime.
After maybe an hour or two, you hear the gate finally open. Everyone walked back in, AJ following them all with Rosie trotting in front, staring behind her at the bucket full of fish. You smile as AJ puts the bucket down, now noticing Clem who was standing behind him. "I believe this is the first time seeing her out of bed?" You nod at Violet, "Yeah, oh— what's he got?" You squint a little bit, noticing the familiar blue and white hat. "He found her hat, small world." All of a sudden Violet sniffed the air, "I smell something cookin'." She grins, "That's because there IS something cooking. Cmon, we can help Omar out." She nods, standing up alongside you and accompanying you there.
You glance at Clem and AJ again, who have decided to go to the tire swing set up a little bit ago by Willy, Clem, and you. AJ seemed to be having fun, which was in fact the goal. You and Violet reach Omar, discussing with him a short conversation before announcing the food was done. Didn't take long at all. "I'll help set up!" You heard Tenn call out, AJ running after him to help.
You feel arms wrap around you and a head being laid on top of your own. "I made ittt." Mitch drags out the t, making you let out a little snicker. "Finally, almost thought you were going to die of your scientist bullshit." He waves his hand, dismissing the idea, "Nahhh, I'd rather die from hugging you instead." You lightly kick his shin, making him let you go. "Rude." He huffs and yells out a surprised 'hey!' As you drag him to one of the tables that were now set up. "Geez, Ain't even realize I'm starving." Mitch mutters as he takes his seat next to you. Everyone joined within a few seconds, chatting along the way.
Within the first few minutes, everyone already resorted to making this dinner fun. Willy flicked his food at Omar, making everyone laugh, Ruby burping loudly then AJ adding to it making Clem scold him, along with Mitch silently being grossed out. You nudge him, letting out a small burp yourself. He groans annoyed at your antics. "That mad at me already? I haven't even gotten started." You shove him, almost making him fall off the seat if he didn't use his hand to stop his fall. "Dear— stop." You raise a brow and smirk as you helped him back to sit right, "That's a new one." He chuckles, brushing his dirtied right hand from the dirt off onto his pants, "What? The name? Unless you want me to call you a Prince or something I suggest you deal with it." You roll your eyes, finishing your food. "Yeah yeah, you and your meaningless threats." You stand up, grabbing his dish as well once he finished. "I'm not the one being dramatic." He grins, messing up your already messy hair. "Lord have mercy."
"Ain't the lord dead?" Mitch inquires, following you to where you placed the dirty dishes, "Good gosh don't say that dumbass, you'll probably get sued by Ruby or something." Ah yes, the respectful Ruby slander almost became daily. "Highly doubt I'm even able to." Ruby more or less so appears behind you, nudging you before heading back to the table. "I'm gonna go chat with Willy to see what I missed, wanna come?" You shrug at him, "In a little bit." You smirk, "Wait till he shows you his hand carved horse." He snickers looking over at the kid, "I'll tell you my thoughts about it when I see it." He gives you another quick kiss before he's on his way to talk to Willy. You cross your arms, looking around noticing most people had already finished. In fact, Louis, Clem, and AJ were talking. A map in Louis's hands. You watch them for a little bit, until Clem and AJ go off on their own, Louis going away as well to do god knows what. Maybe you'll be able to find some people you know along the way. The ones that helped you out when Tamara and Gracie—. You release a small sigh, not bothering to finish the sentence. Looking around, this was a better place than you'd thought it end to be. You've got a whole family right here, and you wouldn't ever give it up.
