20. The Night Will Be Over Soon
"I understand you. I've seen your kind! The worlds full of you!" He thrashes a bit. "I'VE been you! The worlds full of violence. Death.." He shook his head the best he could and looked at you as you got ready to respond, "And it's supposed to be now. This ain't a fucking fairy tail with an happy ending James. We can't 'live in harmony' or whatever bullshit comes flying out of your mouth next!" Clementine steps closer, kneeling at him, "It may not be killed or be killed.. but it's pretty damn close!" You finally release him and stand up, he follows up after and brushes his pants off. "I'll find my own way. And if you ever need help, ask someone else." He turns down a random tunnel and disappears into the darkness.
"He doesn't get it like we all do." AJ says, walking to be in front of Clementine. "Trust me to tell which people are bad. That I won't ever use my gun because I like it." Clementine crouches down to him. You back a little away, since they were having a seemingly heart to heart talk. Clementine glanced at you for a moment before paying attention to AJ once again.
"But only to keep our friends safe." Clementine was silent for a good moment, "Okay." That's when you tune the conversation out, going back to Tenn. Shivering once you reached him, "Feel that?" You nodded, feeling goosebumps form on your skin. Even with Mitch's jacket it wasn't enough to block out the cold.
Wait. You mess with the jacket sleeve, piercing your lips together into straight line. When you get back to him you'd have to remember to hand his jacket back, you noted. Clem's mouth was moving and that's when you realized you zoned out for a minute. "—Out." She was referring to the pathway Tenn and you felt cold air for a good moment. Everyone jumps as they turn from where you all came, hearing the walkers sounds become louder. "He left his mask behind." You turn towards the kid as he waved James's mask around. Clem takes it, looking it over for a brief minute before gesturing towards the supposed exit. "Come on." You nod, deciding to stick behind the kids just in case something snuck up. You all run out, barely missing the walkers flooding into the cave. They were hella persistent.
It ends up being the way, luckily enough. The stars shining brightly above, practically congratulating you all for making it this far. You watch the torch blow out due to the wind that gushed by. Clementine tossed the stick carelessly and kept walking. You pause, watching AJ give Tenn an odd look. Tenn looked worried as the younger kid walked off to follow Clementine. You both remain a bit farther away, looking at each other nervously. You had no idea what that kid was thinking, but just from that gaze, it kind of concerned you. Especially after realizing what that kid is capable of. "Coast is clear." She calls out, searching for anything that'll put a dent into escaping. You've decided you all have been here long enough. You couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. You and Tenn follow behind, slightly lingering to stay behind the other two. "If the shore is that way.. the school is probably that way." Clementine says, pointing in two different directions. After a few seconds, you all started walking again.
"Aasim was the last." That gathered everyone's attention, "Huh?" He nervously played with his sleeve as he spoke, "The day after AJ killed Marlon. You already know Violet, me and Y/n here voted you to stay. Aasim was the last vote." Clementine put a hand on her hip as she went over the boys words. "Wait, that means.. Omar voted us out? And.. Ruby?" He nodded, "Uh.. yeah." AJ let out a displeased hum. The new learned information made him upset. "It was heat of the moment I'm sure. Don't take it to heart." You wave it off, "After all, you did just kill an important person to them." AJ tilted his head back and forth as he agreed. At the time, Marlon was an important person to them at least. "What made you think of that?" Clementine inquires, standing up as straight as she could. "Aasim said you knew how to survive. He could just tell the school would be safer with you there." Tenn explained, you nodding afterwards. You were piecing it together slowly. "I voted for you because I liked you. But his reason, it was better." Tenn rubbed his shoulder a brief moment, looking at you then back towards the two, "I just thought you should know. Aasim was right. We were safer." You nodded, agreeing with him. "I felt.. safe and secure with you guys. You already started to feel like family to me. That's why I wanted you to stay." Clementine gives you both a slightly sad look, before she thought of a response. "That's really nice of you guys to say. Tenn, thank you." She gives an acknowledging nod to you, thanking you silently as well even though you barely spoke other than explaining why you wanted them to stay. "That's okay. Now that we're out of danger and going back home, it just made me think of it." To be fair, he had a point. Plus, it's nice to have these little moments. You enjoy them, much more rather than having moments with some random guy trying to kidnap a child because he thinks he can teach him to be nicer in a world full of flesh thirsty monsters.
"I like Aasim." AJ gives a toothy grin once he says the man's name. "If Marlon was still in charge, we'd be taken to wherever. Or even dead." Ten's face grimaces, "Or sold us off one by one." You mutter, catching Clem's attention who nodded. "Instead, we fought back. Because you showed us how." You could tell Tenn was beginning to admire Clementine as he looked up at her, his eyes sparkling slightly in the dim light. We weren't safe with Marlon. Even in his "safe zone" we were just... hiding.." He looked about to continue before rustling was heard, alerting everyone and gathering a shaky gasp from Tenn. Clem and you gather up front, knives out towards the place of the noise.
Surprisingly enough, Louis came out of hiding with his hands up. A small smile dusting his features as everyone's eyes go wide. "Louis!" AJ doesn't waste a second to run up to him and hug the man. Clementine and you follow after, hugging him as well. Tenn was slightly hesitant, but got in the group hug as well. A slight chuckle from Louis lingering in the air. "You're not dead. That's good!" Louis entices once everyone pulls away from each other. "Did everyone else escape?" You linger behind Clementine, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Damn right. They took that cart and hauled absolute ass back to the school." Clementine paused, looking up at Louis slightly confused. "But you came to look for us." Louis smiled, looking over at you for a brief minute, "For the record, Mitch would've came too, If I didn't stop him. I didn't want anyone else to get hurt." You nodded, thanking him. Mitch didn't need to be put through anything else. Louis looked back to Clementine, bringing up her hands to hold them. "Thought I'd lost you." He lets out a relieved huff, "Only for a minute." Clem responds. "Longest damn minute of my life." Clementine lets out a small laugh, letting go of each others hands. AJ raised a brow at them before going back to smiling. Tenn looked at you making a grossed out face jokingly. You both snicker, looking away when Louis and Clem look at you two.
"It's over, Clem. The raiders are gone, and we've got everyone out alive. Ruby said Violet's eyes aren't infected, so that's good too." You let out a silent cheer, deciding you had to check up on her as soon as you could. "They'll all be waiting for us back home." Home. You grin cheerfully, you couldn't wait to belly flop onto your bed. Doesn't matter how much you hated doing it before, this is a fucking celebration. "Any idea which way that is?" Clementine questions, a hopeful grin on her face. "I haven't been out here in a while, but I think there's a bridge.. that way." He points once he stops looking around. Honestly it could've been worse, so knowing somewhere familiar is better than not. "It's the fastest way back." He concludes, looking the area over. "Let's go." Clem takes the lead, going ahead of everyone. everyone else follow behind closely.
It was a long comfortable silence. It seemed to be almost like a ten minute walk at the least. After a few nervous glances from Louis directed to Clem, he started talking about his past. About a house. You couldn't collect all the details, but it seemed important to him. Their conversation was so awkward and cute. You couldn't help but imagine what it would've been like to build a home with Mitch. Probably would be stupid and not work but hey, it'd be stupidly fun.
"Can I help?" Tenn asked once the two got their purple nine hundred and fourteen floor house with statue of Clem settled. "Of course you can. You're in charge of painting." Tenn's face instantly brightens up, cheerful even. "C'mon. We got a home to build." It took a little while, but the structure of a building finally became visible. "Okay, just take your time and keep moving forward." Clementine says as an attempt to motivate you all. You all follow along, walking across the bridge. Also keeping an eye out for the creaking sounds just in case.
You all hop over the truck in the way, making it to what was almost the end of the bridge before you noticed it was broken. It was quite a far jump. A jump you didn't want to make. Heights weren't always your things, climbing? Sure. Jumping over a large gal that could kill you? No thanks. "That's.. far." AJ jumped and looked behind him as wind blew by. He let out a sigh and look back towards the edge. "Really far." Tenn adds, also looking over the edge. Louis shrugs, hope evident in his face, "I think we can jump it." Clementine nods in agreement, "Yeah I think we can. We just need to—"
"Never mind the darkness."
That singular sentence creeped all of you the fuck out. If this were a horror movie you would've instantly ran away, but due to the dent in your path, you couldn't do a thing. To your displeasure.
"Never mind the storm."
Everyone takes turns looking at each other before turning around to find the source of the sound.
"Never mind the blood red moon."
The girl you all thought was dead came into view. Her bitten off cheek and bloody clothing shining brightly.
"The night will be over soon."
Her voice cracks at the end. She was no doubt in pain. But there's was nothing you could do. Not that you wanted to help her anyways. This was a bitch who needed to stay dead. Tenn took cautious steps calling out to her, "Minnie!" He stopped though, once he saw the walkers crowding her. His face was full of terror, you looked around as everyone's face's seemed to have drained of color. Replacing their features was fear, something you knew all too well.
"Finally.. I found you."
