11. Plants and Wires
It took a good while for Ruby and Mitch to make it to the area, but they made it. Real shocker. Ruby approached the door with you, Mitch, and Clementine following her. "Guess I didn't realize how long it's been, how much it's changed." Ruby tries the door but it seems to be either locked or something like a table is against it. Probably just locked.
"Uh, that's not budging." Mitch points out, "No shit captain obvious." He gives you another glare as you give him an innocent smile. "Alright, Mitch. You gonna stand there sulking all day or are you going to do something useful." You almost cheered her on, almost, you controlled yourself. "Well we need that barbed wire, any other way in?" Clementine asks as Ruby shakes her head. "Not that I know of." Mitch's brows furrowed and he turned, going to the side of the greenhouse. Clementine looked around and then started talking to Ruby. She seemed sad, you couldn't blame her, she seemed to love this place. You heard something about her pa and her knowing most animals and plants, stuff like that.
You follow to where Mitch went, he seemed to be looking up at something on the roof. You don't say anything as you walk around him, looking around for anything. A few seconds later, Clementine comes around the corner and something about her looks off. "Now how the hell did you fit a whole ass boar skull in your pocket? Full on Minecraft inventory right there." She giggles and shrugs at you, "Not sure." Absolutely baffled. She walks up to a window, "Can't see shit." You hear her mutter. "There's too much condensation, you won't be able to." Mitch explains, you then notice Ruby peer around the corner, "Condensation? That's a big word for you!" Mitch rolls his eyes and tells her to shut up. You thought it was pretty funny though. "Man, give me your dictionary, I need to learn a few more words than you." Mitch sighs, trying to ignore you.
But nah, you weren't done. You sneak up behind him and playfully jump on his back, he lets out a yelp as he grabs the side of the building to keep himself standing upright. "What the hell?!" You wrap your legs around his waist and your arms around his neck tightly, not wanting to let go. "Give me a piggy back ride peasant." Mitch rambles a string of curse words directed to you. His face looked a little red. Maybe he had a headache or something, you weren't too concerned. He'll live. He wasn't gonna give you your piggy back ride, but that's too damn bad you weren't gonna let go for at least another minute. He sighs and hooks his arms under your thighs to keep you from falling instead of throwing you off. Clementine, who witnessed the whole thing, walks over trying to contain her smile. She looks at the ladder and then notices a broken window at the top, which you notice too due to the height you had being on Mitch's back. Before she speaks though, Mitch does first. "If we survive the raiders, you and me are going to have some words." Clementine shrugs, "Let's survive first then. Also, I bet we could get in through that window." She points at the broken window. You heart Mitch whisper something along the lines of 'Smartass' directed towards Clementine. "Good spot Clem." Ruby says as she rounds the corner. "Sorry to break up the fun but either Mitch boosts you up there or one of you help me up there." Mitch paused for a second, somewhat loosening his grip on you before tightening it again. "Wait, Make her go first." By her, he meant Clementine. "We send the one we don't mind losing." Damn, you gave him a rough smack on the head for that one. "I'll drop your ass if you do that again." He whisper threatens. You were tempted. Ruby instantly scolds him but Clementine agrees anyway, "I'll go first, I don't mind." Mitch looked a little shocked, "Figured you'd fight it." Mitch let's go of your legs, letting you drop down and onto the ground. "Thanks Clem." Ruby says, backing up to allow you and Mitch to hoist Clem up onto the roof with the small help of the latter.
"Holler if one grabs you. Otherwise we'll come soon as you give the all clear." Ruby says, "Guess we'll know if the door opens." You shrug as Clem hops inside. "You good?" There was a semi loud sound when she landed, "Yeah, I'm alright." You hear her say. It went silent for a good second before you heard groaning and then a thud, "Clem?!" You shout, as Ruby and Mitch go to the door. You follow them, wondering if the door was open yet. Ruby was worried too, banging a hand on the door trying to get Clem's attention so she would respond. You still heard groaning and no response from Clementine. "I'm fine." You finally hear her say, "Oh thank god." Ruby sighs in relief. She once again goes silent and you still here groaning. Eventually you hear two more thuds.
"More walkers? Are you alright?" Ruby asks worriedly. "Do you hear any more walkers? She got them, relax already." Mitch grumbles, crossing his arms. "And open the door." He adds on quickly. "Take all the time you need Clem." You say just to get Mitch riled up. It seemed to work too, he facepalmed and slowly dragged his hand down his face. Drama queen. You hear Clem move something out of the way and then the door opens. The three of you walk inside and look around. Just like Ruby said, it was definitely overgrown. It also had a gross smell, when it hit your nose you nearly gagged. "Not bad." You hear Mitch say to Clementine. She just ignored him. You stay where you are and watch Ruby walk past the plants, naming all of them. She looked so happy. "Let's find that barbed wire, and anything else that's useful." Mitch says, breaking up the little moment. You all separate, looking at your own things. You hear Clem talk to Ruby and Mitch, Ruby being happy that the overgrown herbs will give them a different flavor to the food, and Mitch wanting to see peoples guts get ripped out by the barbed wire. Interesting. You take your finger and draw a little smiley face on the glass, green stuff coming off the glass and onto your finger making you wipe your finger off on your pants.
"Find anything?" Clem asks, looking at the smiley face you made. "That deserves an award." She chuckles, making a smiley face on the glass next to yours herself. She also wipes her finger on her pants afterwards. "Not as much as Tenn's drawings do." She nods, agreeing with you and walks away. You watch her walk up to a cabinet and follow her. She somehow pulls a pry bar out of her back pocket and use it to open the cabinet. "Nah, now how the fuck did you fit that in there." Once again, she gives an innocent smile and shrugs, opening the cabinet. Mitch and Ruby both walk over, looking inside too. Three things of barbed wire rested on the top shelf. While fertilizer rested on the bottom. "Barbed wire. Lots of it too." Clementine put her hands on her hips, impressed.
"That should keep the raiders from climbing our walls. It's sure as hell enough." Ruby says looking satisfied. "Hey we can use these." Mitch says crouching down looking at the fertilizer bags. "What for?" Clementine asks, you already knew, "Bombs." You gave her the short answer. Mitch nods, he looked excited too. His excitement made you feel happy. He looked so cute too just then. You freeze, going over your words. Oh lord. You hoped you weren't falling in love. No time for love in the apocalypse. No time. No time at all.
A hand waves in front of your face trying to gather your attention, and it works. Clementine looked at you, her concern showing but you waved it off as it being normal, you zone out a lot anyway. "It's the kind of stuff I made back home." Mitch says standing up and smiling. "He used to blow shit up all the time." You confirm, "That's why he's a troubled Youth." Ruby says, "Guilty." Mitch throws his hands up and then stuffing them into his pockets. Mitch then starts walking a little bit away, in thought.
"I just need some propane and something to create a spark. Then we'll have ourselves a nice little homemade explosive." He sounded a little psychopathic during the last little bit of his sentence but you could care less. He was really happy so you wouldn't sink his boat. Ruby then walks away as well, leaving you and Clementine.
She gestures you to follow her and you do, which she led you to a shelf covering a hidden door. "Wowee." You look at her, she seemed to want to move it out of the way. Why not? "If I remember right there's a science lab through that door." Mitch comes up behind you both and inspects the door. "Maybe there's propane in there." At this point, you've all been lucky enough. There probably is.
"Come on, help me move this thing." Mitch goes to the side of the shelf while you and Clem grab one of the shelf's. You all decide to just make it fall over instead of pushing it aside. Once it's out of the way, the dull red double door is now very noticeable. Hopefully it's not locked. Mitch puts his ear up against the cracked glass, listening for what your assuming is walkers. "Okay, let's see what's inside." He says after a moment and backs away from the door.
Clem and you look at each other to see who's going first. She was the one who dropped into the greenhouse so you assume it's your turn to do the investigating. You slowly open the door as Clem hands you the knife she must've killed with the walkers earlier. You already had yours but you didn't bother to switch blades.
You walk in, getting about maybe three seconds to look around before you're wrist is grabbed, making you drop the knife and feel your heart pounding out of your chest. The walker had a good grip, you yanked and even punched it's arm to get it off but it didn't seem to let up. Luckily since it was trapped it couldn't do anything except keep you there. So it wasn't that bad. You fall backwards and onto your butt once the walker hand is detached. You instantly shake it off visibly in disgust. You look up at Mitch who held the knife in his hands as he backed away from the walker and held out a hand to you, which you took and stood up. "Thanks. Did something good today did you?" He rolls his eyes but you caught his lips turning into a small smile. He stops though once he realizes Ruby and Clementine were with you both.
"What's going on? Are you alright?" You rubbed your wrist, which Ruby looked at. Small redness. The worst it could end up being was a small bruise. It was definitely manageable so you weren't worried. You were about to respond saying you were good before Mitch did for you. "We had a scare, that's all." Mitch walks away, going to investigate the lab more. Ruby shuddered, you watched as she walked up to the trapped walker. She muttered, 'Oh no.' Clementine almost immediately asked 'What?'
"Mrs Martin. Our nurse. At the school." Oh shit. THATS Mrs Martin? You felt even worse for Ruby now. "She stayed, when all the others left." Suppose she was talking about the teachers and adults. So she was the only adult there with them. Maybe she was a mother figure to Ruby. Kind of seemed like it. "God.. she looks.." Ruby doesn't finish her sentence, her face was reddened like she was about to cry. You hug her from behind and feel her lean back into your chest. It's been a while since you've given someone a proper hug, so this was nice. Usually the hugs you gave were during joking matters, but this wasn't funny. It was hopefully comforting to Ruby which it seemed to be. "You can barely recognize her." She mumbles, still keeping her gaze on the dead woman.
You turn your head and lock eye contact with Mitch, who was crossing his arms and staring at you both. He looked upset maybe it was because of the teacher's death. Yeah. Maybe. "I'm so sorry Ruby." Clementine says walking a little closer to the both of you. Ruby pulls away from you slowly and backs a little bit away to show she just needed a little space but she appreciated the action. "I j- I just wish I could make her look like she used to." She turned to you three, "One day we came out looking for food, And walkers attacked us. Thought we could fight them off but there was.. just so many." She stopped talking, looking around to see if we were paying attention and then continued, "Mrs. Martin told us to run, so we did. She taught me everything I know about medical work. I don't think I can.. take care of her. Would you?" She looked over at Clementine, "Sorry." Clementine shook her head, "Of course. You shouldn't have to be put through that, ever. She's in a better place now and is happy to know that you're still surviving and taking care of people." You could see a faint smile on Ruby's face, but it disappeared as fast as it came. She then walked away, putting her head in her hands. You could hear a few sniffles come from her.
You looked from the walker to Clementine who was looking for the knife. Mitch walked over and handed it to her, almost forgetful he used the knife to cut the walkers hand off. She takes it and walks over to Mrs. Martin. She gave her a look over, taking in the sight of the walker before she plunged it into her head. Killing her. Ruby flinched from the sound of the walker dying and Clementine grunting once the knife hit where she was aiming. "You okay?" Ruby glanced at you before nodding, "Yeah, just need a minute." You understand. It never got easier.
"Come on guys, help me find that propane and we can get out of here." It was a rational idea. You wouldn't have to see the body anymore and you could be with the other kids. Hopefully you could talk to Willy even once you got back. Maybe with Omar too. You haven't talked to him within a few days.
You all split up, going to separate areas to look for the propane. You notice Clementine walking to a beaker filled with something, she instantly gagged and made a sound like she was going to be sick. Probably shouldn't smell and eat random at least a year old stuff you find. Lesson probably not learned. And then the girl stuck a whole ass fly trap in her pocket. She's definitely got a whole void or something in her pockets. She then picks something up and calls out to Mitch about it. "Fuckin-A. Was hoping there'd be one of those! That's an igniter. We can use it to create a spark." That thing was hella old from what you could tell, it was rusted, would it even work? "Now we just have to find propane, we could blast those motherfuckers to hell." You roll your eyes as Clem gives him the igniter. To be fair, you wouldn't mind seeing a big explosion. Hopefully it would be like a whole firework.
You walk over to the ground cupboards near Clem and notice the propane tank very slightly sticking out. There was no door attached to the frame. You grip the handle bit and pull, it was quite stuck. "Oh sweet." You hear Mitch say as he walks over to help. His right hand brushed against your left as he helped you yank the tank out. You let go of it, dusting your hands off now noticing the grayish-blackish dust that coated it. Hopefully that worked too. It looked as old as the igniter.
"Good find. Now we have everything we need." He puts a hand on your head, messing up your hair and walks away once you swat his hand. Clementine comes over to you and helps fix your hair a little bit, hopefully it looked decent. "We should get back and tell the others." He says happily. "We should bury Mrs. Martin first." Ruby says crossing her arms. As much as you wanted to agree with her, you couldn't. The body is old and decaying, probably would fall apart as soon as it was buried. Mitch seemed to gather the same idea except a little more thought out.
"Bury her? Why bother. It's a walker." Well to be fair you all did bury Brody. "Help me drag it out back. We can burn it." Clementine pulls out the igniter and you take it from her after asking for it. You didn't want to be a douche and just snatch it. "No. Mrs. Martins the reason we're all alive." Mitch wasn't convinced, "And?" He puts the tank down, his arm getting tired you could tell. "And she should get a proper burial here, next to the greenhouse she loved. That way the others won't have to see her like this." You look at Clementine for a decision. Mitch and Ruby start arguing a little bit about it before Clementine states her answer. "We should burn her." Ruby gave her a very upset look, "Ruby look, she's been dead a long time. She's not a person anymore." Ruby said nothing as she walked out of the lab, frustrated.
"Stupid. We've all seen people die. Can't fall apart over every one." You shake your head, she was grieving, she can't help it since she knew Mrs. Martin so well. Mitch then picks up the propane tank once more. You three walk outside after you and Clem grab Mrs. Martin's body, passing Ruby on the way and setting her down. You light the igniter which in fact surprisingly worked after a few tries and light her body up. You stare at the fire for a moment before Mitch speaks up.
"It's better, you know. To get it over with." Clementine nods, it's not very visible. "You get caught up in who people used to be and you can't deal with what's in front of you." Some people just can't kill walkers because they're reminded of what they once were. You think of it as doing the walkers a favor. Believing their souls or something are trapped in their bodies. You just left it at that for you to be able to kill them. And it's been working just fine. "I'll tell everyone when we get back. That I changed my mind." You both look at Mitch, confused as a smile planted itself onto his face. "We need you." You could barley contain your excitement, jumping up and down, stopping once the two look at you. You cross your arms and smile instead. Clem laughs before thanking him and walking away.
You all walk back inside, gathering everything you could which was surprisingly everything. "Think it'll be enough?" Ruby asks, walking out the door. "Hopefully. And that means Lilly and her people won't be able to climb the wall." Thank god for barbed wire existing. "They'll have to come through the gates. We can plan for that." Clementine exits next with you following. Mitch then walks out, "Straight into a fiery explosion of death. Assholes won't know what hit em'!" You all exit the area containing the greenhouse, casting one last look towards Mrs. Martin before leaving.
Before you know it, it's night time. You were able to rekindle your friendship with Willy within that time after you all got back. He was the same old Will. You even spoke to Omar about food and spices for a bit. Stuff like that since the findings of herbs in the greenhouse. Definitely a perfectionist, the way he described what his ideas were and how they should taste.
The crickets were extremely loud that you could hear it throughout the school. Louis passed by your open room door with arms full of shirts. Probably for AJ since his shirt is probably ruined from the gunshot. You looked from the door towards Mitch who looked ecstatic, knowing he could make bombs again. "Happy to blow people up are we?" He instantly nods, "Who isn't?!" You shrug, probably no one. No one cares what happens to the kid snatchers at this point. You've been thinking, maybe you did want to see them suffer.
"Hey Mitch?" He looks up, "Yeah?" You couldn't believe you were asking this from him, "I need advice." He raises his eyebrows at you in surprise. "What for?" You sat up, "Is it bad to fall in love during the apocalypse?" His surprised face fell into confusion. "What? You like someone?" You hesitantly nod, he sighs and hangs his head low, deep in thought. "Well.. if it makes you feel any better, I think I fell in love with someone too." Maybe you did have a chance. "Who?" He shook his head with a smirk, "Wouldn't you like to know." He lays back down on his bed, as do you, cuddling up to your pillow. "I don't think it's bad to. Although, even I'm trying to push those feelings down. I probably won't ever confess if I'm being honest. I just don't want to get hurt because of my feelings." You nod, understandable. You were nervous of getting rejected too. He then looks over at you, "Who do you like?" You smile, "Wouldn't you like to know." You mock jokingly, and close your eyes. You hear shuffling, ignoring it. You then feel arms wrap around you. You open your eyes to Mitch hugging you. It was a bit awkward because of the angle but you didn't mind. "I haven't known you for a year or more, but I think you and me are a better duo than Louis and Marlon." You chuckle, messing up his hair for revenge earlier. He rolls his eyes, there wasn't a need to fix it since it would probably end up being like that in the morning. Right, you all had things to do, to set up and get ready. "I'll see you in the mornin'. Maybe I'll help you with your bomb project." He walks over to his bed, climbing in and under the covers. "I look forward to it." And that was the end of the night.
