Chapter 19: What I'm not
(Not everything is as it seems. Keep that in mind while reading this chapter.)
(Possibly a really sad chapter up ahead. Keep that in mind.)
Zack's POV~
I was currently lying down on Brian's chest once again. I've gotten used to giving Brian a chance, and even though I didn't want him to notice, I think he did. He hasn't been keeping both arms around me, just one. He also now let's me go anywhere around the pack house by myself. He probably knows I'm not going to try and escape anymore.
I hate to say it, but I'm starting to get attached to Brian. When I'm not making such a fuss to push him away, he's really not bad as an alpha. Or bad as a person in general for that matter. Call it Stockholm syndrome all you want. Maybe that is what I'm going through. I can't be too sure of anything anymore after discovering the fact werewolves exist.
Brian at the moment was taking a break from the numerous amounts of paperwork he's been doing. All of which seemed to either be peace treaties with packs, trade agreements with packs, and so on. I mean, I'd get tired too if I had to sign multiple documents.
Soon, our rest came to a halt as the pack's guard entered the office. Brian instantly got up and I stayed by his side as he stood up. He obviously wasn't happy that his break was interrupted. Must be tough life for an alpha.
"Sir, we found this thief in our kitchen trying to steal food in a disguise. He's a rogue. No name has been asked yet." Brian nodded and walked over to the rogue werewolf.
"What's your name, huh?" The rogue stayed silent.
"Tell me. What's your name? And maybe I'll spare you and let you wander off into the woods again." The rogue growled before answering.
"My name is Zack. Zack Henderson. Born a lone Wolf and raised a rogue." He said with a bit of malice in his voice.
I noticed his hair covering his eye. Reminds me of myself when I went to school. Come to think of it, about a year has passed when Brian found me. I'm now 18 since I was a senior in Drake Star Highschool.
It seems Brian noticed his hair covering his eye. So he walked over to him and brushed his hair out of his face with his hand. This left me and Brian both astonished as we saw what was behind his hair. A crescent moon around his eye. Just like me and Brian. Brian got shaky.
"N-no. This.. it can't be." Brian sighed. "Take him to a more comfortable dungeon for now. I need some time."
I was about to follow him, but he turned to me. "Z-Zack... stay here.. I'll be back..."
I nodded and sat down at his desk in the now silent filled room. What's going on?
Brian's POV~
I ran out of the office and ran to the garden where the moon goddess shrine was. I desperately prayed to the moon goddess with a deep weight in my chest.
"Moon goddess, please hear my voice and answer my question! You helped me once, please help me again! I found a wolf rogue that shares the same birthmark that my mate Zack has! His name is also Zack! Tell me, what's going on?!"
My prayer was answered as she appeared. She looked down at me with a look of sadness almost. "Brian, alpha of the Northern Lights Pack. There's a simple answer to what is going on, but it seems a simple answer could only be told by someone who knows the answer to it."
I nod my head. My chest hurts so bad. And so does the back of my throat.
"Brian... The human that saved you from that hunter that day.... is not your mate. You used a werewolf's wish to be saved. I granted that wish. I didn't grant the wish that you'd find your mate that day. It was a coincidence that made you think you had found your mate. The human that saved you could have been anyone. It wasn't me who chose who it was that would save. It was me who caused the scenario with a non-specific human. That human you've been keeping isn't your mate."
I felt tears fall from my eyes. My little Zack... Isn't my little Zack?
"I'm sure this is hard news for you. But you have to let him go and be with your true mate. That werewolf rogue. Zack Henderson is your mate. Zack Andrews is a savior of yours, but is not your mate."
I nodded with tears falling from my eyes. I... I have to let him go?
I walked back into my pack after ending my moon goddess prayer. I sulked as I walked back into my office to see Zack Andrews sitting there. He came over to me and asked if I was okay. I gulped nervously.
"Zack, can you please give me some time alone? I need to... think about something right now." Zack seemed surprised, but complied regardless. He then left my office, probably to see Eric and Travis.
I sat here at my desk and rubbed the sides of my head in confusion. How can this happen? How can I have taken in the wrong person? Maybe I can let him stay in the pack? No... Then I won't be able to focus on my real mate...
What if I let him go, but come to visit? Maybe I can do that. Yeah, I can probably do that. But he has to know that I'm not his mate. I'm sure he'll be overjoyed with the news.
I got up and walked out of my office and to where Eric and Travis' room was. When I entered the room, I see Eric and Zack talking to each other. Eric was once again in a straight jacket as Travis held onto him and lightly nuzzled him as they talked. I gulped nervously as I entered the room and Zack's attention was now on me...
"Zack... Please come with me into the woods... We need to... talk." Zack nodded his head as we walked through the woods. We stayed silent as we walked through the woods. A deep sadness filled me as I had to tell the human I thought was my mate that he isn't. It's been a year since I've had him, only to find out he was not my mate? This hurts like hell...
We stopped at the edge of the woods. The place we first met. The place where he saved me. It seems he recognized the area too as he looked at me.
"This is where I saved you from that werewolf hunter." I nodded my head.
"Zack... I have... good news to share with you... from your point of view maybe." Zack looked at me with confused eyes.
"Zack... I'm letting you go. Back to your home. For your freedom." Zack seemed to be confused.
"B-but why? It's been a year, and every escape I tried ended up with you catching me. You smiled every time you did at your victory. You held me close with so much love in your eyes. Why are you letting me go all of a sudden?" Tears came to my eyes and it started to rain.
"Zack... My little Zack... I'm sorry. You're not my mate. The moon goddess gave me a mate with the same name. My wish to be saved was granted, but my wish to find my mate wasn't."
He looked heartbroken. I knew he was growing on me. And now it hurts to tell him the unfortunate news.
"N-no. That can't be right. I am your mate. You held me close, you took care of me, you even kidnapped me because you thought I was your mate. You freaking saved me from a very harsh fever that could've killed me! I am your mate!"
I cried more as he began to leak tears as well.
"Zack... I want to believe you are. I really do... But the moon goddess' choice can't be broken... You're not my mate. So, as the alpha of the Northern Lights Pack... Thank you for saving me... And... I'm sorry for keeping you hostage for a year for no reason... I promise to come visit you every once in awhile... Not as a lover, but maybe as a friend."
"Brian please! I'm a half fox now! I can't live out in the human world anymore! Please, if I'm not your mate then at least welcome me as part of your pack!"
I bawled my eyes out as I fell down to my knees. "I'm sorry! I can't! You're not my mate! And if you stay, I can't love my real mate!"
"Brian! Please forget your real mate! Let me be your mate!"
"I'm sorry..." I shifted into a Wolf form and ran back to the pack house as tears ran down my face. Memories of Zack Andrews flooded my mind as I ran back. The tears kept falling and my heart continued to break as I ran. But I didn't look back. I have to be with my true mate. Zack Henderson.
Zack's POV~
I fell down to my knees. I just lost him. Again, I'm losing someone I cared about. Maybe I did love him. That has to be it, right? Why else would I be feeling heartbroken again? I haven't felt this hurt since my parents died. I bawled my eyes out as the rain fell in the woods.
I got up and went back to the home I had. Only to come across even more bad news as I saw a sign, resulting in more tears falling from my eyes...
"Sale pending."
