00 - PROLOGUE
"A body was found dead at Suraksan earlier this morning. It was identified to be of Mr. Dae Chosung, a Korean History professor at Yonsei University. He was reported missing a month ago afterㅡ"
"Wow! That's so scary!" A high-school girl cried out as she handed Nayeon two bottles of banana milk. She rubbed her hands on her arms as goosebumps filled all of it. "Oppa, let me stay at your apartment for now. Okay? I'm too scared to go home."
I'd certainly target her if I were a killer.
"Of course," the guy replied, winking at her.
Nayeon rolled her eyes as the two in front of her started flirting with each other. The girl was clearly still in high school, judging by the navy blue uniform and the golden plate that said Kim Saeyeon. The boy, on the otherhand, was clearly a NEET. During Nayeon's shift at the internet cafe every midnight until morning, he was always present.
Remembering why she's here to serve customers and not to judge them, she took a bottle and scanned it. After multiplying it by two, she grabbed two straws.
"Two-thousand and six-hundred won," she read the total amount, trying to not give eye-contact. After the girl paid a five-thousand won bill, Nayeon handed her the change. "Do you want a plastic bag?"
Without even looking back, the lovebirds left.
Nayeon took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. Her temper was the reason she was fired at her job at the restaurant. Now, she was trying to control it. There was no way she'd be fired from any of her remaining jobs, too.
"The investigation in search for a suspect is still on going. Netizens are speculating if this is connected to the recent murder of actress, Nam Minyoung, and a taxi driver named Gwok Jung..."
"Umm.. Miss?"
Snapping out of her thoughts, Nayeon looked up to find a handsome young man wearing a fine white button-down in front of her. Letting her guard down, the man looked at her in the eye. Realizing she made such a big mistake, she directed her already wide eyes away and choked back a gasp.
She gasped for air as she her hands remained planted on the counter, supporting her from body from wobbling. Images of a girl wearing the same uniform that the previous customer wore flashed before her eyes. Ra Inna was carved on the golden plate below the embroidered school logo. Hands tied to a suspended rope, the girl wailed as a tooth was yanked out her mouth. A hand grabbed a plier and walked closer to the poor little girl.
"Are you okay?" the man asked, his rough voice sent shivers down Nayeon's spine.
Trying to control her breathing, she looked up at him and studied his face intently. His black, cat-like eyes stared back at her. Removing the disturbing image before her, she glanced at the cup of ramyeon on the counter. She proceeded to scan it, doing the usual routine as tried to stop her hands from trembling so much.
In order to avoid him finding her odd, she nodded with a faint smile. "I'm okay. Just a little feverish."
The young man smiled. "I thought you're going to faint."
Nayeon chuckled nervously, trying not to sound like she's faking it. She gulped before giving him one last look to ask, "Do you want a plastic bag?"
"No, thank you." If this man was normal, Nayeon would have probably melted by his smile.
Before leaving, he waved his hand to her. "Take care."
Psychopath.
The reverse images continued playing inside her mind. She didn't know who the girl was but that didn't change the fact that she's in grave danger.
Kwon Nayeon may look like an average part-timer who had life difficult financially, but there's a secret that she'd been hiding that set her apart from all the others. Just by looking someone in the eye, she could view flashbacks of what someone did within an hour ago in reverse.
This was why she always did her best not to look someone in the eye. All she wanted was to stay out of trouble. But she just couldn't stay put if ever she saw glimpses of adultery, harassment or theft through someone's eyes. She had been beaten up a lot of times because of she just couldn't avoid confronting the culprits.
But this was the first time in her twenty-six years encountering such a psychotic kidnapper.
Suddenly, like a bulb that lit in her head, she remembered about the recent murders that occured.
"Heol..." Bang Sooji, her coworker, exclaimed as she returned back to her post behind the counter. "Gwok, Nam, Dae... R might be next. Hey, Nayeon-ah, do you know someone whose surname starts with R?"
Ra Inna.
Nayeon frisked her phone from her pocket and dialed 112.
"This is the police station. Can I help you?"
