Mommy Come
I walked up the bright pebbled path way up to the oak wood door. I took the keys out of my pockets carefully. I then stuck the key into the keyhole. It made a faint click sound. I squeezed the brass door knob and opened it slowly trying to minimize the noise. However my discretion was for nothing because I heard tiny foot prints on the white carpet.
A small little girl appeared. Her long brown hair swayed back and forth so calmly. Her eyes were bright brown with anticipation to see me. She was holding a teddy bear missing a button for an eye. She held him with one arm. I was able to make out a small sparkle in her eyes.
"Mommy!?!"
"What's wrong darling baby"
"I'm scared *sniff* I hear a scary, scary, monster. He's very angry at me. *sniff*"
"Baby, there's nothing in there." I gave her a sympathetic smile.
"It's real! Mommy please, let me sleep with you." She was in full tears.
I put down my purse onto the hardwood floor. I then started to walk up to Eliza. When my foot left the hardwood kitchen and onto the carpet filled hallway, Eliza sat down.
She sat cris cross applesauce, and had her hands on her swelled up eyes. Eliza was truly afraid. I then stopped walking and began to run to her.
When I approached her I put my hand on her shoulder and said to her;
"I'll show you that there's no monster"
"NO! Mommy he's really mad at you. He didn't like the last time you checked. Please don't go in there!"
I ignored Eliza's foolish babbling and walked into her room. It was as cold as ice and there seemed to be a odd mist in the air. I grabbed the light switch and lit up the darkened room. I saw her bed. It seemed like she had jumped on it a million times.
"Please. Don't!"
"He's under your bed Eliza?"
"Sometimes, other times he's in my closet and other times he sits in the rocking chair and stares at me"
Even though I knew he wasn't real, I was worried for Eliza. This was a lot for her to say just to tell me there's a monster.
"He stares at you?"
Eliza said nothing. She just nodded like a bobble head.
"He doesn't hurt you right?"
She lifted up her small white sleeve to reveal, a large cut along her arm. I squatted down and grabbed her arm.
"What happened, who did this!"
"The monster! He's angry! He told me that if you check for him he'll hurt me again"
I didn't know what to say. Did a monster really do this. No it can't be, it couldn't have been. She must have cut herself when she was playing. Go into my room, I need to tell her that. I opened my mouth but, my words were gone.
Eliza looked at her bed.
"He's watching us."
Then Eliza started to talk to her bed.
"No please, I don't want to. Its not my fault. It's hers." She then pointed to nothing in the sky. Just the wall as if someone was standing there.
"She told me to do it. She said it would be funny. I'm sorry!"
"Eliza. Who are you talking to?"
"The monster. He doesn't like jokes, he doesn't like Suzy as well. He doesn't want another sister." She turned to my belly and pointed.
I looked down and put my hand on my belly. How did she know I was pregnant and was naming the child Suzy.
"Hide her. He's going to take her. He's going to eat her. He tells me every night." *turns head to the bed*
"I didn't know. You never said not to tell her."
"Go into my room with daddy."
She got up out of her seat. She walked to my door and opened it. Then walked into the room. I looked at her bedroom.
"What the hell is she talking about?!?"
I then ignored all her warnings and walked slowly into her room. I was about to look under her bed when I herd a strange noise come from it.
I could only see darkness so I came closer.
"Mommy I said NO!"
I turned and saw Eliza. Her body was shaking. I turned back to the bed. And then Eliza again. I walked to my bedroom. This monster isn't real, Eliza is just playing a joke. It had to be.
When I walked into my room it was warm. I got on my bed, after I took off my shoes socks and such before going into a deep sleep.
I awoke to a deathly scream. A tall figure was in the doorway. It walked to me oddly. Like it's muscles were all in different places. It stumbled to me and whispered into my ear.
"Eliza warned you. She wasn't supposed to. Now she needs to be punished."
Then I awoke again. I looked around it was all but, a dream. I never knew my daughter could make me that scared. I got out of my bed and then my room.
I walked slowly and sleepily to the kitchen. I grabbed a carton of eggs. Cracked a few open and plopped them onto the pan. I was still a little bit shaken up. That dream wasn't so much as scary but, strange. The sizzle of the eggs calmed all suspicion however.
Then on the corner of my eye I saw Eliza. She was rubbing her eyes.
"Mommy did you see him too?"
I didn't understand what she meant. I just kept listening to her.
"What did he tell you?"
"Eliza please, cut it out."
"Ok Mommy"
I flipped the egg to hear the sizzle. My nerves weren't being calmed. I didn't like thinking about this. I then got a plate out of the cabinet and placed the egg on it. I scrambled it and gave it to Eliza.
"I got to go to work. Daddy is going to take care of you okay"
"Yes Mommy but,"
"I'll be fine and there are no monsters it's all in your head."
I walked out the door and went to work. I walked down the pebbled pathway and into my red car. I drove off, swiftly.
