Chapter 1
They were huddled around a small campfire, the rain dripping from under the forestry making it harder to keep alight. That usually wasn't a problem for the fire mage, but after a harder mission that left them feeling more tired, it was increasingly difficult for the pink-haired male to keep the flame alive. They had lost Lucy, Happy, and Erza in the forest when there was an ambush, and they had an item that could drain the magical essence of anyone that came in contact with it. That person was the infamous fireball of the guild, but that wasn't what confused Gray. It was what the firestarter was mumbling underneath his breath with his distant gaze set on the flickering fire. Gray attempted to make conversation; asking about why Natsu froze when in the battle, some small talk about how they were going to annoy the guild at one of its upcoming events.
Said flame-head simply stared unresponsively at the dim lighting. Gray sighed, as he never knew how to act when Natsu grew distant. Memories played across the dragon slayer's cloudy eyes like waves across the ocean- continuous and possibly lethal. As the pink-haired male muttered unheard words, Gray leaned closer, hoping to catch the words quietly uttered. His movement must have been too sudden, because said male jolted away and stared into Gray's eyes lacking focus and intention.
Natsu blinked slowly, his emerald eyes snapping into focus as his attention was drawn to the brush behind Gray, and with no hesitation Natsu shoved Gray to the ground, narrowly missing the arrow that embedded itself into the tree. They stood and prepared for an attack. With a shout of surprise, Gray was grabbed from behind and held in a firm grip, a cold blade making itself known to the young male. A cloaked figure walked out of the bushes carrying a large bow and arrow. The pale moonlight did little to hide the sinister smile upon the stranger's face. Gray called out to his friend with concern, only to have the blade dug deeper into his jugular, cutting off his speech and drawing a thin line of blood. Natsu looked at the figure and stiffened when the person pulled back their hood, revealing a man in his late thirties with a large burn over half of his face. The man smiled, revealing small wrinkles at the corners of his eyes and mouth, and with deep malice lacing his voice, he spoke seven simple words that made any brave mask Natsu had, crumble.
"So, Natsu. It's been a long time."
