Chapter 16: Reunited

Hiccup's POV

"I'll miss you, dad. So much" I told my father as I wrapped my arms around him.

"I'll miss you too, son" My father smiled at me as he ran his hand through my hair. "And never forget that I'm watching over you"

I nodded at him with a small smile as I hugged him a little tighter before pulling away.

"Bye, dad" I waved at him as I walked backwards, and he slowly started fading away.

I opened my eyes with a low groan as I felt a tightness in the middle of my back and my chest. I took a deep breath, only to find that it increased the tightness in my chest. I looked down to find myself shirtless, a bandage wrapped around my chest.

Bits of my memory came back to me as I sat up in the bed with another groaned and looked around the room.

I was in my own bedroom, alive. I furrowed my brows as I remembered what my father had said before I left him: "And never forget that I am watching over you"

I glanced over at the dark figure at my bedside and my frown turned into a wide grin.

"Hey, Bud" The sleeping dragon opened his eyes instantly at the sound of my voice.

Toothless stared at me for a moment before he jumped all over the room, flashing his gummy smile.

The dragon eventually calmed down and come over to me, only to run his big, slobbery tongue all over me.

"Toothless, you know that doesn't wash out!" I scolded the dragon jokingly as I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him in for a hug.

The sound of a door opening downstairs caused me to pull away from the night fury, who sat happily back down beside me as we waited for whoever was downstairs to make their way up.

Light footsteps rose slowly up the stairs before stopping abruptly upon stepping inside the room.

I felt my heart skip a beat as I laid my eyes upon her, the most beautiful I had ever seen.

"Hiccup?" Astrid asked, her brows furrowed as her ocean blue eyes locked onto me.

"Miss me?" I asked her as I opened my arms.

The blonde stood there for a moment, mouth agape and hands hanging down at her sides as she just watched me.

She stared at me for another moment before her lips bent up in a smile as she ran towards me and threw herself into my arms.

"You're alive, thank the gods!" She smiled as her hand ran through my hair and she buried her nose in the crook of my neck.

I winced as the tightness in my chest once again alerted me of its presence. "Yeah, I am. Gods, how I have missed you"

She pulled away from the hug, a warm smile on her face as her ocean blue eyes shone. She let her hand slip into mine as our eyes met.

"Thank you, once again" Her golden hair shimmered in the sunlight that entered through the window.

"For what?" I asked her, furrowing my brows as I had no clue what she was talking about.

"For saving me, you muttonhead, from Scauld's ship" She gave my hand a squeeze as memories flooded my mind.

Our eyes were locked on each other.

Suddenly, Astrid cleared her throat before letting my hand go and standing up. "I... I should probably get going now"

"Get going? Why?" I asked her as I repositioned myself.

"Don't you remember? Hiccup, we are broken up, I shouldn't even be here ..." She said, turning away from me.

I furrowed my brows at her. "We don't have to be broken up, Astrid. Why don't we just get back together? I thought we agreed that this was all just one big misunderstanding?"

"Hiccup ..." She sighed as she shook her head. "I think a small break might be good for us"

I blinked rapidly as my mind refused to process what my ears had just heard.

"I really have to go now, Hiccup. See you later" She turned away from me before rushing down the stairs.

My heart sunk in my chest as I glanced over at Toothless. The dragon let out a sympathetic coo.

I scratched the dragon beneath his chin. "At least you'll never want a break, right bud?"

The night fury turned his head away from me as he avoided my gaze.

"Ha ha, very funny" I narrowed my eyes at him as I earned yet another lick from the night fury.

It didn't take long before the door downstairs opened, once again. I had secretly hoped it would be Astrid, coming back to say that she didn't want a break after all, but I was slightly disappointed when Gothi waddled up the stairs rather than the girl of my dreams.

The older woman jumped slightly at the sight of me, living and breathing. I explained everything to her, before assuring her that I felt fine.

Gothi quickly came to terms with it, and by the time she left my house, I no longer had a bandage wrapped around my chest.

I glanced down at the scar, my finger hovering over it. The scar had healed quite nicely, but my skin still felt as tight as it had earlier.

I got dressed and turned all my attention to the night fury beside me. "So, you wanna go flying, bud?"
