Chapter 4: Outta Breath
Susanna's heart was pounding like a big bass drum in her chest. A strange feeling fell over her like a heavy curtain. Surely it was merely because of her nearly being hit by a car. But somehow that didn't seem quite right. A light had been on in the car and she had thought she recognized the man driving, but how could she? The license plate had been from Tennessee, she had been able to see that much as she lay in the muddy ditch at the side of the road.
Slowly standing up, she made her way to the road again. That car had given her an idea, however. With a quick prayer, Susanna prayed that if it was God's will and another car was to come around the bend of that curve, she would hitch hike for the first time in her life.
Before she had finished the prayer, headlights came. And instantly she wondered if she had made the right decision. The car pulled to a stop in front of her and the window rolled down. "Hey. Do you need a ride somewhere?"
"Yes." Susanna said, wondering where this was coming from. As she came around to the passenger side of the car she remembered her mud covered dress. She paused with the door open. "My dress. It's muddy. I'll ruin your car."
The guy driving the car gave an easy smile, pulling a blanket from the back seat. "Here. It's all good."
Susanna felt heat rush into her face. Was she crazy? That didn't stop her from pulling herself into the seat of the car and closing the door behind her. This day hadn't exactly been what she would have planned. So why stop now?
"Where are you headed?" The, if she had to admit it, incredibly cute man driving the car, asked her with a friendly smile.
"Away," The words left her mouth and hung in the air for no reason.
He eyed her dress, but didn't mention it. "Anywhere in particular?" He joked.
Susanna felt some of the tension leave her shoulders as she laughed. "Not really. Anywhere. As far as it is far away."
"How about Tennessee?" He said, his eyes know back on the road, giving Susanna some time to eye the contents of the car. Dog toy. No trash. And a Bible tucked in the back seat.
She smiled. "I love Tennessee."
He seemed happy with her answer. "Well. Tennessee it is then."
