Hey, I'm Abigail Olley. I know what you're thinking, and yes, my parents are James and Lucille Olley, famous movie stars. I'd prefer if you didn't mention that though, thanks.
I just turned 16 years old, and all my life I've dealt with the messenger. My boyfriend, who only dated me to say he dated the daughter of a famous person, dumped me through a meathead jock I didn't even know. I was told by my father's secretary that my parents weren't coming to my middle school graduation. As you can see, my life is just peachy.
My only real friend was a guy named Chris. He never mentioned my home life, and he got me. He was never rude to me when I made stupid book and movie references. But, as I said my life is great, so he had to move all the way across the country to Oregon.
Anyway, I sit with my next best friend, who only first talked to me because of my parents but turned out to be really nice and not shallow at all, at our lunch table.
"Abby, are you going to homecoming next week?", my best friend Ellie asks urgently.
"I don't know El. Maybe. No one has asked me, and I have nothing to wear, and... I'll go if you want me to," I sigh defeated as I see her puppy dog eyes.
"You're the best Abby!"
"Yeah yeah, I know," I laugh a little, returning to my bologna and cheese sandwich.
"No one has asked you to go yet? Are you sure?", she asks raising an eyebrow.
"Yes El, I think I'd know if a guy asked me to homecoming," I reply like I'm talking to a 1st grader.
"Geez, just wondering. I never can tell with you, you know. Oh! Like that time you showed up to school wearing your shirt inside out!", she said before bursting into fits of laughter.
"Hey! I said never to mention that!"
"Well, you say a lot of things I don't listen to, like that time in freshman year, when you liked that guy and I told Chris, and he threatened the guy," she again burst into a fit of uncontrollable laughter.
"I'm leaving before you tell the whole world how they can make fun of me," I reply pretending to leave.
"Aww come on Abby, you know I didn't mean it. I'm sorry."
"Fine. But only because you apologized."
She gasped. "Abby, I think someone's here to see you," she says in a sing-song voice. She suddenly jumps up, taking her lunch with her, and plops down at a table on the other side of the cafeteria, to sit with her volleyball teammates.
"Wha- Chris?!" I ask/gasp/yell as he sits on the bench in front of me.
He smiles his dazzling white smile that makes my heart run laps. No, I don't have a crush on him, don't even dare ask. Wait... Well... No! No, no, no, I don't.
I stare at him my jaw hanging open, as I take him in before he leaves again. I look at his wavy brown hair that perfectly contrasts with my straight blonde hair, his sparkling clear blue eyes that, again, contrast with my hazel eyes. I look at his face, slightly older and more defined than before, and briefly my eyes flutter to his lips, soft and pink.
He laughs, "Miss me?" I leap up and give him a tight hug, silently breathing in his pine scent.
"Maybe... Why? Did you miss me?" I ask laughing, happy that he's here. We sit back down across from each other.
"Yeah, you're my best friend."
"Really? Still?"
He scratched the back of his neck, "Uhh... Yeah. I don't have that many friends, the closest I have to a best friend is a guy named Josh. Only because in basketball practice I threw the ball to him, but I broke his nose."
I snorted, then covered my face, then laughed.
"You still do that," he grinned.
Was it just me or was his cheeks turning a light shade of pink? No, stop dreaming Abby. Dreamers' hearts get broken.
I asked him the question that's been bugging me, "Not that I don't like it, but, why are you here in New York?"
His smile fades, "Um, my parents are divorced now, so it's just me and dad. Mom stayed in Oregon, but dad moved here," he explained.
"What?! You're staying here? Like, for good?", I couldn't believe this.
He laughed, "Well, yeah. I mean, unless I should move to another school-"
"No! I-I mean... Just... I missed you."
Suddenly, before he responds, Ellie comes bouncing over, "Hey Chris! What took you so long? You were supposed to arrive yesterday! Do you know how hard it was to keep that from her for a whole day?"
"Back up! You knew?!" I yelled, surprised.
"Well, yeah. He wanted to surprise you because-" she was interrupted by Chris leaping up and smacking a hand over her mouth, his eyes wide.
"Hehe... Uh... I should go see the principal now. Ellie! You're leading me!" He drags Ellie out of the cafeteria.
Hmm... What is he hiding?
