Chapter Seventy Seven

Too much time has passed.

We've been sitting here waiting for hours and haven't heard a single thing on the outside. No banging on the wall and no screams that we can hear. The waiting was killing us. Me more so than Kyle, who ended up lying on the cot huddled in a ball staring into space before falling asleep.

I wished I could. But it was hard too when your mind refuses to stop worrying. I was pretty sure night had fallen by now or at least dusk. I don't know what I would do if it turns out that we were the only two who survived this hellhole. If Alex doesn't get back here by midmorning tomorrow, we were heading out on our own.

There will be no point being stuck here without the others. Sure, neither of us was probably well enough to defend each other but I was done waiting on looking for Jinsen. It was time to start the search for my boyfriend. Kyle wouldn't say anything against it since he can either follow me or stay here by himself and I doubt he'll want that.

"I guess I have no choice but to get some sleep." I whisper to no one.

Closing my eyes I try my best to fall asleep. To tell myself that without rest I wouldn't be alert when I'm out there looking for my other half. It helps, a little.

"Zared."

My body begins shaking as I slowly start to wake up. Opening my eyes I see Kyle kneeling next to me, his expression one of worry. Waking up fully, I quickly sit up forgetting about my side. Wincing with a hiss, I push his hands away as he tried to help.

"What is it? What's wrong?"

"I think someone's been here while we were sleeping." He whispers and I stare at him in confusion.

"What are you talking about?" I look around the shelter to see nothing different about it.

"They didn't take anything, which is weird. But the door was left opened, and I know we closed and locked it."

That got my alarm bells ringing. Looking to the door now I see it was just as we left it. Getting up I walk over to it. "Are you sure?"

Carefully opening the door, we get flooded with bright sunlight. Thank God it's daytime. Slowly looking out I don't see anything out of the ordinary. But that doesn't mean that what Kyle said wasn't true. If he said the door was left open then I believe him. The only concern is, is how did someone get in with it being locked and why didn't they take anything?

Looking back to him, closing the door once more, I frown. "That's strange." Was the only thing I could think to say.

"You're telling me. I nearly had a heart attack when I opened my eyes to find it slightly ajar. I thought you had gone outside or something, but you were still in the same position you were in last night."

I didn't like the sound of this. I didn't like this new thought that somehow, in some way, that someone was able to get in without either of us waking up. I wasn't a heavy sleeper and ever since being brought to this place I was more of a lighter sleeper than before. So, this kind of freaks me out.

"I was thinking, if Alex doesn't come back in about an hour, I think we should head out." I tell him, disregarding the door now.

No point in stressing on it if we plan to leave anyways. Whoever it was can take it, even though they didn't bother to take anything when we were asleep. Maybe by leaving they could leave us alone. The sudden thought of the men who tried to kill me and Jinsen flashed in my mind. What if there were others like them? They all didn't die after all.

What if one of them found this place, was able to break in and saw all the things that was inside but didn't do anything because they saw us lying here? Maybe they had been alone. But how did they travel in the night without getting caught by the monsters?

It took only another second to remember what that man had said. They don't get eaten because they provide the food for them. So, was the person immune at night? Were we now a targeted victim for them to use to stay alive?

I didn't like where my thoughts were going, and I knew it was best to leave now. Whether he wanted to or not.

"Actually, maybe we should start packing what we need and head out as soon as possible."

"But what if they show up when we're gone?"

I start grabbing things to throw in my bag as he says this. "We should be able to encounter them if we go in the direction they went."

"But wouldn't this place be safest for us? It has food and water. Plus it keeps those things out."

I can hear the desperation in his voice and if I told him what that open door symbolizes, he was only going to freak out more. I had to use my words lightly. I had to remember that he was still just a kid. Placing my hands gently on his shoulders, I try to get him to calm down even though I was feeling anything but that.

Looking into his eyes, I carefully say, "It isn't safe here anymore, Kyle. That monster knows we're here so it's best that we don't stay any longer. Honestly, we probably shouldn't have stayed overnight, but it couldn't be helped. We have to go."

He bites his lower lip, looks around one more time and nods his head in agreement. I knew he didn't want to leave, that he was scared, especially after what happened to him yesterday. But if we both wanted to survive then we needed to move on, with or without the others.
