Chapter Forty Three

My heart literally stops in my throat when I hear his name. I mean, not literally, that would be impossible, but you get the idea. My eyes turn huge when I snap my head in his direction to see him there, leaning behind another part of the building across the way looking scared, disheveled, and panic stricken to see us.

He was all alone and looked like he had seen way better days.

My heart picks back up and pounds against my chest to realize that he was indeed in this hellhole after all this time. But what the hell was he doing here of all places? He starts waving for us to head over to him while looking around everywhere.

At the moment, I chanced to look down at Zared and Leo, just to see Zared staring right at me intently. His face was expressionless before he looks away from me and back to Matty who was now starting to get frantic.

Oh. Right.

This wasn't the time or place to deal with our issues right now. Our biggest problem was to get as far away as possible. I turn to the girls with a frown when Christina whispers,

"Matty is a part of my group that got stuck here. We should head over to him; he may know how to get away from here."

He was a part of her group? Why didn't she say anything about him? Right, no one aside from Zared knew that I had been friends with Matty. Then he was the fourth member that was left behind? Which meant...

I look back over to him as he continues to wave us over. He must have witnessed what happened to the other three that were with him. Somehow, he had gotten away before they could have done the same thing to him. And to go through all that then be alone for an entire two days...my heart constricted with sadness and sympathy.

He had to feel so relieved to see us right now.

But we were currently in a serious predicament. Christina doesn't wait for any of us as she hunches low to run over to me and the guys. She stays as low as she could, making sure that she wasn't seen from the other side. Lacy hisses at her, but no one pays her any mind as we watch to see what the girl would do next.

"You can't be seriously thinking about running over there to him, Christy." Leo whispers feverishly at her as she settles next to him, looking back over the hedge.

"It's Matty. He'll know where we can hide."

"How could you possibly know that?" Zared asks her next.

"Because he's the reason we have survived as long as we have. He knows these streets better than anyone."

Huh. That was news to me. Matty always seemed to be the shy withdrawn type. One who would be a follower, not a leader. I quickly hunch down to their level with a heavy frown. "Not to sound like a dick, but if that's true then how is he the only one alive?"

It's true that I was happy to see he was still alive, but I found it odd that he was all by himself. Maybe something happened to where he couldn't help them, and the murderers didn't realize he was there.

"That's one of the things I want to ask him myself." She whispers and before anyone could stop her, she jets across the street as fast as she could.

"Cristy-damn it!" Leo hisses as he tried to stop her but was unsuccessful.

My entire body constricted with alarm waiting to see if something bad was going to happen, like her getting caught by one of those people. But she was able to make it to the other side. I watch as the two of them hug dramatically then start whispering frantically.

Then they stop and Matty once again looks around seeming to be a lot more determined than before. I guess he deemed the coast clear as he looks to us again and starts waving crazily to follow suit.

"Fucking shit." Leo whispers and immediately runs across the street just as fast as his cousin did.

Together they both crouch down as Matty was the lookout. I turn to face Lacy and Lani, nodding my head in the others direction. "Come on, we need to hurry."

Lacy pushes Lani ahead and together the two of them head off to join the others. I crawl next to Zared, who was still avoiding my gaze.

"Hey, you're still with me, right?" I ask him, getting his attention.

His eyes blaze with worry, yet conviction too. "I'm with you. You should go next."

"What, no way-"

"Jinsen, I always give in to you when you want things your way. Please, just...go. For once can't you just do this for me, please." He begs with a sigh.

Guilt slams into me and I'll admit a bit of concern at the way he was acting. I wasn't sure on what I should say to that. All I could do was nod at him. Securing my bag more firmly on my shoulder and my shotgun gripped in my hands, I wait for Matty's signal to run.

When he looks around and seems everything looked clear he nods his head and waves me to cross the street. I take a deep breath and double make sure I can't see anyone as I run as fast as I could to them. Once I hit the sidewalk, I take two large steps when Matty grabs my arm and slams me in his embrace tightly.

"Holy shit, Jinsen!" He gushes, his body trembling against mine.

I couldn't help the sudden stiffness of my own, since it was so unexpected that he would do that. As quickly as he did it, he let go and completely disregards me altogether as he turns back to where Zared was still crouching watching us with an uneasiness about him. I don't mean to get close to him, but there was only so much room to stay hidden as I made sure he makes it over as well.

I stare at my boyfriend while Matty once again looks around and waves him over. But just as he was heading to us faint voices carried over to us. We all immediately crouch low to the ground as Zared hides behind the hedge again.

My heart starts pounding hard against my chest as anxiety and adrenaline starts pumping through my veins. Carefully looking around the stone pillar that this building has, I see two people walking slowly towards where we were. My body freezes in place seeing they held sharp weapons that could clean a skull right in half.

They actually looked handmade, but it was too far to actually see them. One of them looked like some thick club of some kind and seeing it was beginning to make me hyperventilate. I stare back at Zared realizing he was all alone on the other side of the street. But if he runs now, they'll definitely see him.

His face was grim as he watched the two people as one of them slaps the other upside the head getting a growl of anger from that person.

"What the fuck man?!" He cried out, pushing the other guy hard.

I couldn't hear what the other was saying as he gets in the dude's face and whispers something heatedly. They were getting closer but judging by their obliviousness they didn't know we were over in this area.

I look back at Zared and he looks back over to us. He then starts waving us away and I was already shaking my head no at him. There was no fucking way I was leaving him behind. His antics get more determined as his face contorts in sternness as he sees I wasn't budging. I mouth at him, 'NO' with a sternness of my own.

He starts falling back and on instinct I move forward beginning to panic that he was moving further away from me. Someone grabs my shoulder, hissing, "We need to go, now Jinsen."

"No." I whisper desperately as I shove them off me rudely never taking my eyes off Zared. He waves again for us to get out of here, but I wasn't budging, still shaking my head determinedly. My blood turns cold when we start to hear footsteps getting louder towards us.

"Hey, did you hear something over there." One of them whispers loud enough for us to hear.

Full on panic and fear washes over me as my eyes widen. I don't hesitate to go to him immediately. But I never get the chance too as hands starting pulling me away from him, away from the one person I knew I couldn't be without.

I start to fight back as hard as I could as they literally start picking me up and forcefully dragging me away from him. "N-" I nearly scream out, but someone puts their hand over my mouth to shut me up.

I try so hard to get to him, to get them all the fuck off me as I watch him head back towards the entrance to the subway station. He then disappears behind one of the pillars that I had been at before. Tears start to swell in my eyes as I start thrashing to get them to let me go, but whoever the fuck held me was one strong motherfucker.

Apparently, there was a door just behind us that I wasn't aware of and still partly to the ground we rush inside. I don't remember much after that, wanting to get back to Zared, worried that he was going to get caught and I wasn't there to protect him. Horrible images start flashing into my brain at the thought of what they would do to him if I wasn't there to stop them.

The next thing I know I'm being dragged down a flight of stairs since I guess they knew if they let me go, I would run right back outside. Sobs were stuttering out of me as whoever's hand was still over my mouth. I still fought them, however.

It was dark where we were going and Matty led the way for us. I finally see him open an old door and wait for us to get inside. Once we were he quickly slams the door shut, leaving a heavy resounding separation of me and Zared.

That sounded way too definite in my ears.
