Chapter Forty Five

I carefully look around the building to see no one there. Breathing a sigh of relief I try to figure out how the hell I was going to run to the front of the subway station when the street was wide open space, and the building was a good fifty feet from where I was at.

The building I just came out of was large as hell, making it longer in length than the subway station. If Zared was in there, I prayed to God that he just hides in the lobby and didn't chance to go down below. I don't think my heart could handle him being on his own with something like that.

"Look, over there is the back entrance. Hopefully its unlocked and we could just slip right on in."

Matty's voice was just barely above a whisper next to my ear. He was right behind me nearly plastering his body on top of mine as I was hunched to the ground, with him leaning over me. Normal world me would have been completely ecstatic of the closeness, but monster world me just wanted him to back the hell off.

Readjusting my shot gun comfortably I tell him, "There's nowhere to hide if it's locked. We'll be sitting ducks for those fuckers if we're caught."

While the others decided they wanted to chicken out and stay down below and hide, Matty was the only other volunteer that tagged along with me. I was actually shocked to be honest. I figured he wouldn't dare slip back out again after what he had experienced with the looney bins that were walking around.

But I take a chance anyways. Zared needed me and time was being wasted enough. Looking around one more time, wondering where those other two had gone off too, I don't inform Matty and jet across the street as fast as I could. I hear him hissing at me, but I was already far enough to not hear what he had said.

I slam against the building, my heart racing like crazy from that little exertion with a burst of energy. I look around the side again to still see no one about. Looking to Matty I wave him over and he quickly follows without hesitation. Once he gets next to me, I try the door and thank my lucky stars that it opened right up.

I falter from heading inside as it was near pitch black. Though I internally was freaking out, I round up all the courage I could muster and rush in without a backwards glance. If there were monsters in here, then I'll just have to hope and pray that I could defend them off so I can get to Zared.

The sunlight from outside doesn't fade and I frown, turning to see that Matty has yet to walk past the threshold. He stared inside with fear filled eyes, hesitating on taking a single step inside. I knew he was fighting himself on whether to follow me or not. I didn't blame him it was a hard decision to make not knowing what could possibly lie in this place.

"Matty?" I whisper and wince when my voice carries throughout the place.

The building was like a terminal, the clerk counters with open space like any train or airport station held. Just beyond that were escalators that went to another ground level where I was sure the subway cars were placed.

This place was a lot bigger than I first thought it was. And while the glass front doors shed some light from outside, it was still quite dark. But at least there weren't too many places that creatures could just hide in. Still I clutch my weapon close to me in case I needed to use it.

When he still doesn't make a move, I sigh irritably. I didn't have time for this. I walk up to him and whisper, "It's okay. You don't have to come if you don't want too. Head back to the others and once I get Zared we'll both come back to you guys."

I go to turn back when he says, "No. I'm going. I won't leave you by yourself. And it's Zared. I want to make sure he's safe."

My heart twisted a little. It wasn't that I didn't forget how he felt about my boyfriend, but that was just it. He didn't even know that he was my boyfriend, and I couldn't help feeling a little guilty that it was me that Zared liked and not him. I should care, and I probably will eventually. But right now I didn't.

Getting Zared back was all that mattered to me.

He finally walks through and closes the door, shutting out the light making the place even darker. I can barely see his face as I indicate for us to stay silent. He nods his head and together we move forward. The floors were tiles so keeping our steps quiet was kind of difficult. Looking around I don't see anything that provided that anyone has been here recently.

I wanted to call out his name, but that was way too risky. So, how was I going to find where he was hiding if he didn't know I was here looking for him? Matty taps on my shoulder then points to something to my left. I stop and stare. The void like stairs were pitch black below and creepy as hell. I prayed that he didn't decide to go down there.

Turning away I head to the front doors instead. It's possible he never even made it in here in the first place, which could cause a real fucking problem. Carefully walking up to it, trying not to expose myself, I peek outside.

I didn't see anyone, the place completely abandoned. I was worried that I had no idea where those two people had gone off too. They couldn't have disappeared that quickly, right? I slowly reach for the handle and turn it.

It was unlocked.

Letting it go I step back again and look around a second time. This time I choose to look higher up at the buildings. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Not like I really could since it was too far to see anyways. Gritting my teeth I debate whether Zared came in here or not. If he did, I would assume that he would be sitting around the common area, and he would have presented himself by now seeing the two of us.

Or...he could have gone down to the subway cars. I look back to the escalators. No, there was no chance he would face going down there alone. One, I found it hard to believe he would leave me behind like that and two, he knew we went into the building next door, so him going down there wouldn't benefit him getting to us at all.

Then where the hell is he?

I couldn't help the overwhelming emotions rolling over me at that moment. He wasn't here, but he was nowhere outside either. There were murdering lunatics out there hunting us down and there were monsters desperately wanting to eat us at every chance they got. I was tired, my foot was throbbing, and my throat kept tightening with the constant tears that wanted to flow.

I was angry, upset, and I was scared.

The feeling of wanting to go home hit strong. But most of all, I wanted to see and hold Zared again. Not even away from each other for twenty minutes and already I was freaking out without him. I take a deep breath and decide to try my luck out front. He had to be somewhere around here.

As soon as I go to open the door, Matty stops me. "What are you doing?!" He hisses at me, his eyes looking a bit wild.

"I know Zared, if he hasn't made his appearance by now then it's likely he isn't in here." I stress.

"I told you; I saw him come inside before we went through the door." He presses, covering my hand tightly.

I frown. "And I'm telling you, he isn't in here."

"We haven't even looked, Jinsen."

"We don't need too, Matty. Zared isn't stupid to go down there. He'll be trying to figure out a way to get to us in the other building if he can."

"We don't know that for sure-"

"I do. Zared won't leave me behind." I nearly bit out in rising annoyance and anger at this conversation.

"You'd be surprised what people you think you know would be capable of doing in this place." He mutters and I stare at him.

He looked a bit bitter, and I wasn't sure on why. "Matty...did something like that happen to you?" I ask carefully, wanting to know.

"All I'm saying is people aren't who you think they are. Don't be so quick on being sure that you can rely on them."

A flare of anger burst through me hearing him think that Zared would ever be a person like that. Even if it wasn't me, he still wouldn't leave someone behind just to save his own ass. I was damn sure of it.

I go to voice my opinion, but something catches my eye outside. "Hey what is..." My words die as my eyes turn wide in alarm. It was a small child running, crying their eyes out as they try their hardest to outrun one of the men that was hunting us down. He was hysterically laughing, toying with him as he chased them.

A flash of adrenaline and protectiveness slams into me as I completely throw caution in the wind and open the doors just as I see Zared come out of nowhere slamming his entire body into the guy, both of them crashing to the ground with a grunt.

The kid kept running, tears streaming down his small cheeks. My heart stuttered to a stop when I see Zared and the man fighting on the ground, with Zared yelling at the child to keep running. I don't hesitate to run out the doors, unmindful of Matty calling me to come back.

Running as fast as I can, fear and terror comes in wave after wave when I see more of them running towards us from the other direction. They were closer to Zared than I was, and I was afraid I wasn't going to make it to him on time.

"Zared!" I scream out, my breath coming in hard and fast as my lungs burned to get to him.

He jerks at the sound of my voice, his eyes widening to see me coming after him. I don't stop even when another one of the men finally catches up to them and starts pulling my man away from the other one, who was holding his nose with blood everywhere. Tears start brimming my lashes as pure fear causes my heart rate to skyrocket like crazy.

"Get the fuck off of him!" I couldn't help screaming, watching helplessly as they start dragging him and kicking him in the stomach.

I finally reach the one that held him, and I immediately throw my fist into his face, nearly tripping over Zared and the one that was behind him.

"No, Jinsen!" Zared grits out as he tries to get to me.

A searing pain hits my back and I fall to my hands and knees, my breath lodge in my throat as I try hard to breathe. I look up to see more of them coming.

"What the fuck!" The one I hit in the face rages at me.

He then walks up and kicks me right in the gut, making me land right to the ground. Pain washes through me like a lightning bolt and my vision wanes from the impact. I hear Zared struggling. The same guy reaches down and grabs a fistful of my hair, yanking it back making me cry out.

"Stay away from him! Don't you fucking touch him!" Zared sounded so angry as he thrashed and kicked to get them off of him.

The guy that smelled like blood and body odor yanks me to face Zared head on. I reach to his hand to try and pry his fingers off me, but he had a good grip on my hair, and I could already feel some of the strands being ripped right out.

"What the fuck is this? Are you gay for him or something?" The others laugh at his lame excuse for a joke.

"Hey, that's the pretty boy I saw earlier!" One of the guys came walking up looking at me with gleeful eyes. "You ruined my grand old plan, man!" He stops in front of me and places his hands on his hips in a dramatic way like all this shit was some sort of game to him.

He sighs heavily and kneels. "I promised myself that if we caught you, I would at least give you a nice little show for ruining my last one. But looking at you, all pathetic and stuff, I think it's best you be the show."

"If you fucking touch him, I'll fucking kill you." Zared seethes, his breathing coming out in quick little bursts, his eyes hard and cold as he looked to the guy that was facing me.

He looks over his shoulder at him and barks a laugh. "I don't think you're in any position to do shit." He taunts.

He looks back at me again with a frown. "Now, where were we?" He mumbles to himself.

"Hey Jonesy, lets stick a pole through him as his Loverboy watc-." A sudden deafening blast rings through the air and I sit there in horror as the guy's face was blown half off.

No one moves, no one says a word as we all stare in complete and utter shock at what just happened. We all watch the man slowly fall to the ground releasing Zared from his hold. Speaking of, he was covered in the guys blood and flesh.

I quickly turn to see who had shot the guy practically headless just to see Lacy standing there with the shotgun that I had previous dropped in my panic to get to my boyfriend.

She now had the gun pointed right at the guy in front of me, her face showing pure hatred. "You're next asshole."
