Prologue
Oh God....
How could this be happening?
Blazing flames rose and danced along the oak wood floors and the walls. Everything in the path of the inferno was consumed. Nothing was spared. Even the house's inhabitants were at its mercy. As a matter of fact, both mother and daughter were trapped within a burning ring. The mother's legs were captured beneath the burning rubble, her sobbing daughter kneeling next to her.
"Kuria... please...." Begged the mother, "You must leave. It's too dangerous here."
"No! I-I...don't wanna g-go without...Mommy!" Cried Kuria, her tears falling into the head of her teddy bear.
The mother racked her brains for an idea. She had to make Kuria leave... She had to. Then a plan struck her.
"Kuria, sweetie. Look at me." The child did so. "How about we play a game? Whoever gets out first wins!"
Kuria furiously shook her head. "No! I'm not leaving without Mommy!"
By now, the flames had almost doubled in their capacity, and the black smoke became so thick that it was difficult to breathe. Kuria's mother grew weak as the kindles of fire tore at her flesh and the smog clogged her lungs. Kuria herself was in no better condition.
"Mommy! I've got an idea! I'll go get some water! Water puts out fires!" Exclaimed the younger girl.
"No! W-Wait! The fire...is too...dangerous." Protested her mother. But it was no use, the last thing she saw of her daughter was the five-year-old running off into the kitchen or bathroom to fetch the water.
Then she heard it. A horrifying, blood curdling scream penetrated her ears. Kuria.
"Kuria!" She screamed. No reply.
Her vision quickly fading, she did her best to free herself of the collapsed roof, but to no avail. Her arms gave way beneath her. She lay there: bloodied, burned, and crying - praying that her wouldn't die here.
But it was too late.
Kuria's corpse lay on the kitchen floor, her lifeless hand grasping the arm of her teddy. The fire completely engulfed her within moments.
