Meeting Dawn
2 months later
*Will*
"It's okay dad ... I prefer to handle it myself from here". I say when he offers to help me all the way into the school.
It is my first day in the new school and dad has just taken me there. But I do prefer to get into school alone and not only because I want to show I can handle myself, but dad tends to draw a lot of attention and I just want to blend in.
"Okay ... call me when you want me to pick you up ... also if it is early". He squeezes my shoulder, knowing I would get embarrassed if he hugged me here.
"Sure dad". I say and give him a wave, before grabbing the wheels and pushing myself towards the entrance.
Inside I look curious around. It is nice with a new start. Here no one knows me from before. So there won't be old memories that people keep mentioning, only to clamp a hand over their mouth and apologise.
Looking for the office, I roll down the almost deserted hallway, spotting a small group of people up ahead. Maybe they can give me directions.
When I get closer I see that it is two boys and a girl, but the girl doesn't look happy at all ... actually she looks pissed and rather frustrated. "Hey, give it to me".
"No". One of the boys holds up a pink unicorn bag. "We just want to know what you have in it ... tampons, or sexy underwear maybe ?"
"Just stop it Jason". She sighs, holding out her hand. "Give me the bag".
He throws it to the other boy, who starts to open it. Seriously I hope this isn't normal behaviour at this school.
"Hey". I roll over to them. "How about you just give her the bag ?"
"How about you stay out of this wheelie ?" They guy who is apparently called Jason says with a look telling me I just put myself on his blacklist.
I shake my head. "Is that the best one you got ? Wheelie, very ingenious ... and two against one ... is that the only way you can feel big ?"
"You are feeling all heroic, huh ?" The guy says, glaring at me. "Coming to the freaks rescue".
The girl visibly swallows and I feel this weird urge to protect her.. like more than I normally would. "No, not heroic ... just tired of watching dumbasses pick on someone smaller than themselves".
"We can pick on you instead". The guy grins and waves at his friend, and honestly I do not feel good as they move in on me.
Ten seconds later I find myself on the floor, my chair overturned and the two idiots are walking away laughing.
"Sorry, let me give you a hand". The girl says, peeling the chair of me, making sure I am not entangled in it.
I try sitting up. "Those guys are some real jerks huh ?"
"Jason and Terry, yeah". She shakes her head as she squat down beside me, helping me sit. "And to think Jason used to be my best friend".
"Yikes ... sorry". I mumble.
She smiles, she has a cute smile and freckles on her nose. "It's not your fault, but you should not get involved, new boy ... won't help you fit in".
"I do prefer Will ... and I don't care. I hate bullies". I shrug slightly. "And you are ?"
"Dawn". She says, flicking her dark chestnut hair over her shoulder in a nervous way. "Let me help you back in the chair".
I look at her, then the chair. "Nice to meet you Dawn ... but maybe you should like ... go get a teacher. It's not as easy as it looks".
"I am stronger than I look". She grins at me with mirth dancing in her large brown eyes. "I think I can handle you".
She slides her arms under mine and around my body, then she hoists me up and with a little struggle gets me into the chair. "Hey you could .. cool".
Sending me another grin she flexes her right arm bodybuilder style. "Mommy got muscles".
"Mommy ?" I look at her with one eyebrow raised.
"Yeah, that sounded much cooler in my head ... you know like when guys call themselves daddy". She scratches her head. "Nah that actually sounds weird too ... lets just scratch that".
I nod and chuckle. "I second that".
"So as I definitely haven't seen you before I assume you are new". She picks up her things from the floor, swinging the bag over her shoulder. "And looking for the office".
I nod again, this time slower. "You are assuming completely right".
"Come on then, let me show you the way". She starts walking down the hallway. "It's the least I can do really".
"Lead the way". I am actually happy that she doesn't ask if she should push me, it always makes me feel so helpless when people ask.
She whistles a short tune, then looks at me. "You know what Will ?"
"No, but I have a feeling you are going to tell me". I look at her curiously.
"I think this could be the start of a beautiful friendship". She smiles. "Yup that sounded just as weird as in my head ... but hey I really think so".
I grin. "I think you might be right".
