"Lucy!! Lucy!!! Over here.... come push us on this roundabout!" Apple exclaimed, dragging her little brother towards the purple roundabout that sat in the middle of the park. I turned and saw Chris smirk at me, that mischievous glint in his eyes taunting me. I shook my head with a smile and followed them over to the roundabout.
"You guys better hold on tight alright?" I laughed, making sure that both children were securely sat in the middle. Just ask I was about to start pushing, two large hands playfully jabbed my sides from behind , making me yelp in surprise. I relaxed as I already knew who it was when he giggled in my ear loudly, his breathe sending tingles down my neck. The kids laughed as their father wrapped his arms around me, spinning me around to face him.
"Oh my God Chris! You scared me!" I giggled, gazing into his bright blue eyes, which were crinkling at the corners as he smiled at me. The navy beanie that he was wearing made them stand out more than usual. Gosh he is so handsome.
"I'm sorry love, but that was an opportunity too good to miss!" He chuckled before releasing me and went to sit cross legged on the roundabout with his eager children, wrapping his arms around both before looking up expectantly at me.
"Well c'mon on then! Push us!" He exclaimed. 'Dear God, he's worse than the kids!' I thought to myself with a laugh as I started pushing them around. Even with Chris' weight, I managed to get them moving quite fast, spinning around wildly as They all screamed gleefully. Well Chris couldn't stop laughing.
"Faster, FASTER!" Apple screamed
"NOOO!!!! I'M GONNA BE SICK!!!" Moses shouted, making us all laugh. Luckily, he was joking and After a while, I stopped pushing them and let the roundabout slow right down, grabbing the kids' hands as they got up and attempted to walk in a straight line- they were so dizzy! I turned my head to see that even Chris had turned a bit pale after that adrenaline rush.
"Are you alright?" I laughed as he literally tripped over an imaginary object. He looked down with a knowing smile, avoiding my gaze as cheeks turned red in embarrassment.
"Yeah, just a little dizzy" he chuckled, falling into step with me and rested his hand on my shoulder, gently gripping it to help keep his balance as we followed his children down the path. After a while , he recovered and bent down to lift tiring Moses onto his shoulders. It was nearly 7pm and it was starting get cooler.
"Dad, can we go down one more slide before we go home?" Apple asked him, her sky blue eyes gazing up at him hopefully.
"Ok, just one more" he told her, lowering Moses down to the ground again. We watched as the two ran back to the slides and climbed their way to the top.
"C'mon guys! You should have a go too!" Moses yelled, beckoning us over to them.
"We're coming!" I told them, Chris by my side as we walked across the field.
"I heard there used to be weight restrictions on these things... if I get stuck, it's all your fault " Chris joked, linking his arm through mine and pulled me along with him.
I grinned at him knowingly. "It's not my fault you're a giant " I joked. "You don't have to go on it though " I added, hoping to change his mind... I mean, what if he got hurt?
"I know... But I want to " he said with that mischievous glint in his eyes.
We watched the kids go down it a few times before I climbed to the top of the slide to find it surprisingly high. Chris stood at the bottom to catch his kids if they went too fast. I went down it a few times and I flew down , despite being an adult. It seems I forgot how much fun these things were!
"Go on then Chris! It's your turn" I told him, giggling at how his kids started to push him towards the ladder. He climbed to the top and begun to slide down with ease but but hips got wedged as the slide got narrower towards the bottom . No matter how much he pushed, wriggled and pulled, he remained stuck.
Of course, the kids and myself collapsed into fits of laughter, the kids teasing him and running away when he asked for their help. They wanted to go on some different swings and after 20 minutes of struggling, Chris gave me a pleading look as He reached his arms out towards me.
"Have you had enough already?" I teased, grabbing his hands and pulled hard before finally freeing him from the slide's clutches.
"Totally! I knew I'd get stuck! Thanks Lucy, You're a lifesaver" he grinned, dusting himself down before calling the kids and we all walked back to the house.
Once we had some dinner we all sat in the living room to watch a movie. It started with the kids watching attentively, chatting excitedly and I was sat in between them. But by 11pm- I could see that their eyes were starting to get heavy. Moses was leaning against the sofa's armrest and Apple had cuddled up to her father, resting her head on his chest and had her arm wrapped around his stomach. I mentally awed at the way he had wrapped his arm around her as he absentmindedly combed his fingers through her hair. He glanced at me and caught me watching them. He met my gaze with a small smile before sitting up slightly, arousing both kids.
"I think it's time for you guys go to bed." He told them. Both protested and tried to reason with him but soon gave up as it was way past their bed time and it was obvious they were exhausted.
"Good night Lucy" Apple told me, coming over and hugging me tightly. I hugged her back, my eyes meeting Chris' and mouthed "awww". He grinned proudly in return.
"Good night Apps... you too MoMo" I told her younger brother, who was rubbing his eyes tiredly. Chris took them upstairs and returned about 20 minutes later, I heard his footsteps making their way down the stairs before he rounded the corner and sat down on the sofa next to me.
"They're both fast asleep- completely worn out" he stated with a chuckle, taking a sip of tea from the mug I had just made him. His eyes flicked from it to me "Thanks Lu, you make a lovely cuppa".
"You're welcome... today was fun" I replied. "Your kids are so sweet though, you must really miss them when they're away " I told him, sipping the contents of my mug as well. He turned his head to gaze at me, a distant look in his eyes.
"I know.... it's hard being away from them. I mean, they know that me and their mum aren't together anymore and we try to keep things normal for them... but they're not stupid. They know things aren't good between us- they have to put up with so much shit" he stated, guilt plastered on his features.
"Hey... It isn't your fault she cheated though... I'm sure they understand, they love you so much" I said quietly, wanting to reassure him and a small smile stretched his lips.
"I know.... they're my world. I'd do anything to make them happy but I just wished they didn't have to have their world turn upside down, you know?" He said, leaning back and sank into the sofa. I nodded in agreement and we sat in silence for a while compensating our thoughts. I'm glad he was beginning to open up a bit more to me but I didn't want to push him too far or to make him feel uncomfortable. I wanted him to talk to me in his own time. I'd always be there for him and the kids.
