Art: Camp Edition

So for the past week I was in this art camp (which I love dearly and have been going for 7 years in a row I think) and I made some stuff that I can share :)

MONDAY:

We went to look around a nearby town and the task was to take photos so that we could sketch later. That didn't happen officially but some people did sketch on their free time, including me. I took a photo of a friendly cat and tried drawing it but realism didn't want to cooperate, so I did this instead:

TUESDAY:

Sculpture day. We were supposed to think of a giant and nonsensical project and then make a model of it. And it also was supposed to involve the environment we were in. I found this little ditch you could easily just step over and thought of putting a giant staircase on top of it to represent how people exaggerate small problems into something inconveniently big. This is the sketch:

And this is the final thing:

And props to the teacher how saw me cutting sticks and being mad at them as hll and told me to stop that and use his weird paper for the steps instead. It does look so much better than it would have.

WEDNESDAY:

It was supposed to be theater day but the teacher couldn't make it because he got some huge career opportunity he couldn't turn down (which is totally fine and I'm so happy for him) so we did linen prints instead which is sort of tradition of the camp at this point but we usually make them during free time. I didn't really have any ideas, so I kept sketching some random stuff until something clicked and I really love the outcome. This is my sketch:

This is it perfected:

This is the stencil (which is now black because the paint doesn't wash off):

Boiii did my hands hurt after this...
This is the final design:

I also put it on a t-shirt and a tote bag. And there was a very cool girl who I liked immediately upon meeting and at some point she asked me if she could put my print on the back of the tee she was wearing and, hell, I've never been more encouraged and of course I let her do that.

THURSDAY:

Comic book / graphic novel day. The artist who ran the class was so cool! And the supervisors had brought some of her books for us to read if we wanted, I managed to read like 2/3 of one and it was amazing.

I had told one of the supervisors that I had a comic idea and that I kinda wanted to work on it and she notified the artist about it, so the two of us had a chat about it. We talked about how I was planning to release it, to which I said I was thinking about WebToon and she said that it was a good idea, since it would put me on a schedule instead of "doing that when I had time" meaning never. I also told her that I was stuck with my plot and she told me that I could try drawing some panels and seeing if it became more clear later. I said that I wanted to have the full script ready, so that I wouldn't hit any plot holes mid-way and she said it made sense but I now think it would be beneficial to look at everything from a different angle.

Anyway, when people were creating their short stories, I was focusing on my comic idea and I think it worked pretty well.

Well, the first thing we did was practice on facial expressions. The artist handed us out some portrait drawings and told us to draw them faces with some kind of expression and then later others would have to guess what it was. One rule was that we were not allowed to use pencils or erasers meaning mistakes had to be part of the art. So this is what I came up with:

I tried making that guy kinda calm and reassuring or something but he turned out flirty instead and everyone found that hilarious lmao.

We then did string comic, where we would switch papers for every panel and they turned out hilarious but I sadly don't have any photos of that.

Then we had to make these "plans" for our comics. The artist gave us papers with stuff we needed to think of and told us to draw/write that. I think it's really helpful because I actually figured out the key parts of my comic, which I really haven't thought of before, so anyone wanting to start a comic, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS.

Translation: (L to R)
1. Character
2. Location
3. Another character (Friend? Enemy? Crush?)
4. What do they want?
5. What stands in their way?
6. Something unexpected
7. The ending

Later people were drawing their comics but I wanted to work on mine and I knew it was impossible for me to even try to finish it because of time and lack of materials, so I made sketches for the first two pages (without any dialog because I didn't want to think about it):

Since I'm on the topic now, I've been drawing my OCs during the free time, so I'm throwing that in now (some of these suck because I'm not used to crayons and that was what was available at the time):

FRIDAY:

It was cinema day mostly focused on animation, so I can't show the finished thing I and my friend did (we were partners for this one) but I can share the storyboard and the props we used.

Basically, we were watching some stuff for inspo and I really liked the idea of filming shadows but I thought that I also wanted to animate something, so I decided on doing a mixture of that. My friend didn't really have any ideas and I knew I needed at least one more person to complete mine so we partnered up and came up with this:

It's not exactly like that in the final thing as filming shadows turned out to be much more challenging than I expected but it's close enough. Basically, my friend acted as a vampire raising his cloak like they do in movies and then we used paper stop motion to animate him turning into a bag and flying away. This is what we used for the bat (except I accidentally lost 2 frames, oops...)

The second part was me acting as a angel swaying around. The challenging part was making wings, since we needed a third person to hold them up next to our lamp and we came looking for someone and found my sister and our friend hanging out, so we asked them if one wanted to help and the friend immediately got up shoving my sister away even though he wasn't done with his own movie and she was. We ended up kicking him out though because he was shaking his arm badly and also kept asking stuff and it was getting annoying as we were already tired as hell. My sister didn't do the perfect job but it was good enough to make into the final cut. This is what we used for the wings and it's tiny:

We then animated the angel flying away and his feather going down and turning into a puddle, or at least, that was what we wanted to do, but I accidentally kicked the light box during the feather segment and I though I ruined it but I didn't want to redo everything because we both were just about to end ourselves as everyone was already done with their projects hours ago and we still had the editing left, so I just left it was it was but when I started editing that mishap turned out to be the best part since it looked like a lightning hit the feather and it melted, it was perfect timing at it's best. These are the cutouts we used for the angel:

Okay, so that's it for now. See y'all
