Chapter two: A hot back
—————————————————————
Three knocks were placed at Emily Gilbert's bedroom door, the girl quickly peaked her head up from under her covers, telling the person to come in. In walked her aunt Jenna with a mug of coffee In her hand. Once she noticed the teenage girl her expression changed from happy to worried. "No, no Em, not again." The concerned aunt whined. "You gotta actually sleep Emily!"
"Who needs sleep when coffee exists." Emily responded jumping out of bed, uncovering three text books and summer reading. She smiled taking the purple mug out of her aunts hands. "Thank you Jenna."
Jenna let out a huff. "Don't make me take you to the doctors, because then they're going to prescribe you insomniac pills and suggest you attend therapy, and when I don't do it because therapy is unnecessarily expensive, I'm going to be shamed as a parental guardian." Jenna expressed.
"Aunt Jenna I don't need any pills and I sure as hell don't need therapy." Emily says into her mug.
"Also who does summer reading, you need to get a life Em." Jenna teased. "Get ready for school."
Before Emily Gilbert began her day, she cleaned her room, not that it needed cleaning considering she cleans it every morning. She refolded her clothes and updated the calendar on her wall before making her way to the bathroom that her and her siblings shared. Emily doubted that Elena and Jeremy even knew how their bathroom got cleaned, who opened the tubes of toothpaste, who put the towels in the wash and put out new bars of soap. Emily was very much aware of how invisible she was in her own home which was why the teen girl did her routined cleaning.
Emily now stood in the kitchen making herself a to go coffee. She didn't miss how her sister observed her every move. Elena watched her sister nervously, she was concerned, no matter how much eye makeup Emily put on, Elena still saw the tiredness in her sisters eyes. "I heard you sneak in late last night." Elena not so subtly mentioned.
"Yeah, I went out, got some coffee and took a walk." Emily responded. "Uh, I think Bonnie's here, we should get going." She quickly diverged. Emily grabbed her bag before heading towards Bonnie's car that was waiting on the curb outside the Gilbert house. She greeted her friend before getting in the backseat. Elena soon joined them, she seemed a little more worried than she did before, Emily couldn't tell if it was because of being in a car or she had just had another bad encounter with Jeremy.
"So Grams is telling me I'm psychic, our ancestors were from Salem and all that, I know crazy but she's going on and on about it and I'm like put this woman in a home already." Bonnie rambled. Emily got distracted halfway through her sentence, she watched as a crow flew by and landed on a tree as they passed the old cemetery. The cemetery Emily had been meaning to visit.
"Elena! Emily! Back in the car."
"Sorry Bon." Emily sheepishly apologized.
"I did it again, I'm sorry Bonnie, you were telling us that..."
"That I'm a psychic now."
"Right okay then predict something about me." Elena mused.
Bonnie sighed like she was in deep thought as she squinted at Elena. "I see-" before Bonnie could get the sentence out a bird crash across the windshield causing her to swerve the vehicle.
"What was that?" Bonnie freaked out.
"Elena are you okay?" Emily asked her twin, now she was the one worried, she knew it wasn't easy for Elena to be in cars after the accident.
"I'm okay, I'm fine."
"It was like a bird or something it came out of nowhere."
"I can't be freaked out by cars for the rest of my life." Emily gave her sister a reassuring rub on the shoulder to comfort her.
Bonnie looked between her two best friends in contemplation. "I predict, this year is going to be kick ass." She finally spoke. "And I predict all the sad and dark times are over and you two are going to be beyond happy." She added.
"Uhg Bon what did we do to deserve you." Emily said in adoration for her friend. Bonnie Bennett definitely was the perfect best friend, always there when you need her most. When Emily was fourteen years old and sick with the flu, she was upset about missing Caroline's big birthday party. So Bonnie begged Caroline to postpone her own birthday a whole week until Emily was happy and healthy.
Bonnie Bennett was a forever friend.

When the girls arrived at school everything seemed normal, everyone was chatty and happy to be there, which was concerning to Emily because, who the hell wants to be at school? The brunette thought to herself. Emily didn't mind occupying herself with work as a distraction but actually attending school made her miserable.
Emily's eyes landed on her friend Ruby by her locker. "I'll catch up with you guys in a bit." She told Elena and Bonnie before making her way across the hall.
Once Ruby Fells eyes saw Emily they immediately lit up and moments later Emily was consumed in a spine crushing embrace. "Oh my gosh, California was soo boring, my Nana is such a freak, her house is creepy as hell, and I just wanted to be here with you, ugh missed you so so much!" The red head squealed.
"It's nice to see you too Ruby." Emily said in between a fit of laughter.
The two girls caught up after spending the summer apart. Ruby did most of the talking, she told Emily about her grandmothers house in California and how it was a pain in the ass to pack up. Her grandmother would be staying with her and her mom here in mystic falls for awhile. She also told Emily how there were no hot guys in the neighborhood where her nana stayed. The term witch popped up in her sentence a few times, but Emily couldn't make it out with all the information Ruby was unloading on her. Ruby also said that she wished she could've been home for the summer so she could've been there for Emily after the funeral.
"Anywho we should find Elena and Bonnie so I can tell them this all over again." She said taking Emily's hand and dragging her off.

Out in the school parking lot Nora Bennett leaned against some random persons car and watched as Jeremy Gilbert gave Vicky Donovan some pills. She was annoyed to say the least. Maybe it was the fact that Jeremy had just lost his parents a few months ago and a senior like Vicky Donovan shouldn't be encouraging the use of drugs as an outlet for the freshman who was still grieving, or maybe she was just jealous of Vicky Donovan sinking her claws into Jeremy just to get drugs from him.
Tyler showed up, and Nora only assumed he was being the asshole he normally was. He kissed Vicky while Jeremy painfully watched.
The Gilbert boy finally walked away and Nora pushed off of the car she was leaning on. Once Jeremy's eyes landed on Nora he rolled them to the back of his head. "Hope you find your sanity back there." Nora exclaimed with a smug grin on her face.
"What Nora? You gonna go snitch to my sisters?" Jeremy said annoyed.
"No, I'm just here to remind you that drugs will ruin your brain and so will Vicky Donovan, that's all."
Despite the banter between the two, all Nora wanted was to look out for Jeremy, he's been overlooked by the whole school since his parents passed. Always known as Elenas little brother. Then as soon as Elena's name came up he was forgotten, and the attention slowly moved towards her, all the 'I heard your sister was in the car when it happened' , 'must've been horrible for her' which it undeniably was, but it was also horrible for Jeremy, and Nora wished people would realize that.
"You think you know her so well. Everybody thinks they know her so well-"
"I never said that, I'm just saying think about all those drug programs that came to our middle school and think about the lessons they taught about the people you surround yourself with." Nora lectured.
"Quit being an asshole and stop acting like you care, we both know this is just a fun opportunity for you to make me feel like crap." Jeremy spat.
Nora flinched at his outburst."That's not true Jere."
"Whatever." And with that he was gone and Nora was releasing a frustrated grunt.

"Hold up." Bonnie froze in her tracks, cutting off Ruby mid sentence of explaining how a girl who used to be in her English class got sent to boarding school for vandalizing her father's boss's car.
"Who's this?" Bonnie continued in confusion.
All the girls eyes moved into the main office were a guy in a leather jacket stood talking to the school secretary.
"All I see is back." Elena replied.
"It's a hot back." Bonnie deadpanned. "I'm sensing Seattle and he plays the guitar." Bonnie said squinting her eyes.
Elena let out a laugh. "You're really gonna run this whole psychic thing to the ground huh?"
"Pretty much." Bonnie replies with a nod.
"Okay guys we're staring like creeps." Emily hisses, trying to get the girl's attention.
Neither Bonnie or Ruby budged. But for Emily and Elena they saw Jeremy walk into the boys bathroom clearly stoned. With out really thinking about it, the twins barge into the boys to find Jeremy using a small bottle of eyedrops.
In a matter of seconds Elena had Jeremy by the chin trying to look him the eyes. "Great it's the first day of school and you're already stoned." She scoffs.
"What the hell Jere, teachers are eventually going to stop giving you the pass to act like this." Emily tells him. She's already noticed how the dead parents pity from other people has died down when she accidentally bumped into a senior in the halls and how the girl didn't take it as well as she would have four months ago.
"I'm not stoned." Jeremy shakes his head.
"Where is it?" Elena asks, beginning to search his hoodie. "Is it on you?"
"Stop, you need to chill yourself ! Alright?" The teen snaps. "Both of you." He adds as his eyes move between Elena and Emily.
"Chill myself? What is that stoner talk?" Elena retorts. "Dude you are so cool." Elena continued to search her brother.
"Stop I don't have anything on me! Are you crazy?"
"You haven't seen crazy, Jeremy I gave you a summer pass but I am done watching you destroy yourself."
"Yeah Jere, aunt Jenna doesn't need this right now. She's still adjusting to the whole parent thing." Emily chided.
Jeremy began to stand but Elena pushed him back down onto the kitchen sink. "No, no, no, you know what? Go ahead. Keep it up. But just know that I am going to be there to ruin your buzz every time you got it?" Elena proclaimed. Just as she finished up her sentence a toilet flushed and a high school boy walked out giving Elena and Emily a quizzical eyebrow.
"Ew, he didn't even wash his hands." Emily commented with a grimace on her face. Both Jeremy and Elena cut their eyes at their sister.
Elena turned back to Jere with a more sincere look on her face. "Jeremy I know who you are, and it's not this person. So don't be this person."
Jeremy looked like Elena had reached him for a second. But the boy masked his vulnerability quickly. "I don't need this." He claimed. Jeremy stood and walked out the bathroom, his shoulder brushing Emily's as he did.
Elena sighed. "Alright let's get out of here."
Emily scrunched her nose. "Don't have to tell me twice." She replied jetting out the bathroom.
When she exited she saw Bonnie and Ruby trailing behind the mysterious hot back guy like true stalkers. Instead of waiting on her sister she headed towards the two.
"What did I tell you guys?" Emily asked as she approached. Bonnie gasp cut her off, Bonnie pointed behind her. When Emily spun back around Elena was talking the the guy in the leather jacket.
"Ugh Elena always gets the hot ones." Ruby groaned.
The bell rang, cutting off the girl's conversation.
As Emily began to walk off Ruby grabbed a hold of her arm. "You're coming to the mystic grill tonight right?"
"No I was gonna skip out, I have Tanners next and I can only imaging the homework he's gonna give, so I'll just be busy working on that tonight and stuff-"
Ruby held up her finger to stop Emily in the middle of her ramble. "Yeah wrong answer, I'll pick you up, be ready by 6:00." Ruby said. The red head gave Emily a kiss on the cheek and walked off.
Emily shook her head in amusement as her best friend strutted off. She always got her way, but this time Emily wouldn't allow it, no matter how much she adored the red head. Not this time.
