▌VI WANTED TO BELIEVE SHE WAS trapped in one long nightmare, the kind maeve used to scream about. the kind where you're alone, terrified, hopeless— where your worst fears are served up on a silver platter. but unlike maeve, vi had to face the brutal reality of the world as it was. alone.

because the cries that tore from her throat proved this wasn't a dream, or some nightmare. this was the horrifying truth of what the world had become. what it could do to the ones people loved.

vi's hands trembled against the unconscious girl, grief stabbing at her, every painful thought a blade, tearing at her skin and sinking deep into her chest.

the neon liquid, on the other hand, starting its course through the girls body. the shimmer spread throughout the girls veins, clouding her mind, turning everything weightless, distant.

"vi, we have to go," caitlyn's voice was soft, urgent, her hand on the girl's shoulder. vi shoved it off, her fingers threading through the girl's dark hair as she laid in her lap.

"wait, cait..." vi's voice cracked as she stared, wide-eyed, through her tears. "what's happening?" she whispered, drawing the girl closer.

she gasped for air, throwing herself forward with heavy breaths and low eyes. panicked whimpers fell from her lips, then, with a weak chuckle, she sank back into vi's lap.

"you miss me?" she teased, her chest rising and falling with each strained breath. vi and caitlyn stood frozen, shock flooding their senses. relief washed over them, but there was still disbelief.

the kind that makes you question whether you've lost your mind.

without a second thought, vi pulled maeve into her arms, clutching her as if letting go might make her vanish.

vi let out a shaky breath as maeve used a small amount of her strength to hold vi back, just as tightly.

"you scared me," vi whispered, her voice barely audible as the two of them held each other, eyes closed, trying to make sense of it all.

"can't get rid of me that easy, baby." maeve murmured against vi's neck, digging her face deeper into the warmth there. the coldness that had gripped her body melted away in an instant.

"wouldn't want to, even if i tried, princess."

they lingered there for a moment, then maeve pulled back just enough to see caitlyn as her eyes were distant, locked on something in the distance. maeve followed her gaze, her heart lurching when she saw jinx standing on the ledge.

jinx's rocket launcher was held weakly in between her fingers, her head hung low, braids dancing in the wind. terror surged through the three of them.

"we need to go. now." maeve's voice was low but urgent as she stood, her legs shaking beneath her. she caught herself on a nearby table. maeve noticed how caitlyn, couldn't even keep herself upright.

vi moved to help maeve, but maeve shook her head. landing her hand on the red haired girls chest. "no. help caitlyn."

vi hesitated, watching as maeve found her balance. taking a breath before she nodded and rushed to caitlyn's side.

maeve's eyes flicked back to jinx, who casually tossed the rocket launcher over her shoulder, fingers already on the trigger. the weapon was aimed at the blood-red moon above them, a silent shimmering tear fell from her eyes as her fingers clutched the trigger.

the roar of the launch was deafening, a crash that shook piltover and zaun to their very core. a brilliant blue flash lit up the sky, blinding the three of them as they scrambled to escape the building.

the familiar glow caught maeve off guard, a tear falling from her eye as she raised her arm to shield her face.

then, the streak of blue shot through the air, a crack of electricity that pierced the sky, the world holding its breath as it streaked toward the moon, its force unstoppable.

caitlyn's scream shattered the silence, raw and heart-wrenching, as she watched helplessly. maeve and vi could only stare, their bodies frozen in shock as nothing could've prepared them for this.

maeve's heart dropped as she realized what jinx had aimed at. the council. the explosion shattered any remnants of respect she had for jinx. rage flared inside her like wildfire, burning through her chest, while her heart broke for caitlyn. she knew who was in that council, and she knew her mother was among them.

her breath caught, but she kept a sliver of hope alive, turning to vi and caitlyn, who were still reeling, eyes wide with disbelief. caitlyn's tears flowed freely, her body trembling as she clung to vi.

maeve moved to caitlyn's side immediately, pulling her into an embrace. "hey, i've got you," she said softly, her voice filled with quiet strength. caitlyn broke down in her arms, tears soaking maeve's shirt, while vi stood there, her mouth open in shock.

vi was lost, overwhelmed by a storm of emotions she couldn't quite make sense of. shock gripped her, heartbreak twisted inside her, and in that moment, everything felt utterly incomprehensible.

everything around them was collapsing, and all maeve wanted was to rewind time— to change everything, to save lives, to save her family.

revenge had taken on a new face, and terror had replaced any hope for peace.

maeve knew what she had to do now. she wouldn't rest until she got her revenge. and no one— no one— was going to stop her.
