꒰ ❛ step into the light ❜ ꒱
▌WHAT IS DEATH? is it darkness? is it heaven? or is it just a consuming experience, like an endless sleep?
no one truly knows, not until it happens to them. and even then, if they make it out alive, can anyone really say they understand what it is?
the overwhelming sensation of stepping into the light, trying to grasp what has happened, while others experience your lifeless body from the outside.
but sometimes, it's all just one long dream. a final vision of what you hoped for before the end. you replay the wishes you never voiced, imagine how things might have been different.
in maeve's case, the words "i love you too" echoed in her mind, a longing for words she never said. her thoughts were consumed by violet, every word reverberating through the walls of her mind.
I LOVE YOU VIOLET.
I LOVE YOU VIOLET.
I LOVE YOU VIOLET.
I LOVE YOU VIOLET.
"i wish you knew that," maeve whispered, bowing her head. her eyes hadn't opened yet, still lost in the fog of what felt like an eternity in the white room.
the walls were blinding, shining too brightly against her cold skin. she had no memory of how she got there, only those few words lingering in her mind.
"i'm okay, i'm alive, i'm fine," she murmured to herself, clutching her head, knees drawn to her chest as she sat on the cold floor.
a sharp ringing pierced her skull, making her wince in pain, as if someone had fired bullets straight through her mind.
when the pain didn't stop, a scream tore from her throat, rigid and raw, filled with horror and terror.
THEY DONT MISS YOU.
THEY DONT WANT YOU.
NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME.
"shut up! shut the fuck up!" she stood from her spot, widening her eyes as she spun around slowly. taking in everything that surrounded her.
the white walls blinding her as she brought her arm up to shield it. "what is this place." she whispered to herself, looking down at her hands as she inspected herself.
maeve felt weightless, as if she was floating above her own body. she could slip through the walls, untouched and unaffected. the thought sent a shiver down her spine.
the body that didn't exist.
"what am i doing here!" she screamed into the walls her voice echoing before the silence overfilled the void, while eerie chills falling down maeve's back.
the bright wall infront of her started morphing into an image. maeve could feel the tears prickling her eyes as she noticed it.
vander was standing over the bar. cups in his hand as maeve sat on the otherside with a barstool under her. her hand occupied with a small plushie that vi had given her.
vander tried cracking a joke, but instead maeve slumped her head down into the bars counter top, her chin pressed against her arm as she played with the plushie.
"whats the matter, kiddo?" vanders voice rung through maeves head as she lifted it. she just shook her head, as if saying it doesn't matter.
vander sighed, placing a glass down onto the bars counter and pouring an orange drink into it, a straw following soon after for maeve to sip out of.
"come on, whats going on?" vander pushed her some more, leaning down onto the counter and throwing a rag onto his shoulder.
maeve let out a small sigh, "the night— the night on the bridge.." she paused for a moment, not daring to make any eye contact with the man infront of her.
"how did you know who i was? you could've just left me there.." maeve felt herself become emotional as she remembered that night. how vander saved her from the most tragic event imaginable.
vanders eyes softened. his gaze set on the emotional girl infront of his, "your mom.. she was one of my closest friends. i had known her since we were only children."
maeve lifted her head some more, facing up to the man, suddenly intrigued by the sudden information. "i swore that i'd protect you whenever i could."
maeve continued to listen, but confusion grew inside of her. "then why did i never seen you before then?" she furrowed her eyebrows, taking another sip of her drink.
vander looked away, "the last time i had seen you, you were just born..." he paused for a moment. "then your mom, was suddenly gone. she had run off somewhere with your dad."
"she just... disappeared? no one had no idea where we went?"
vander replied with a shake of his head. maeve sighed, "i searched for you for years. until i found you on that bridge."
the air became suffocating around them, and maeve couldn't take it. she jumped off of her stool, rushing around the bar and jumping straight into vanders arms.
a few tears fell down her cheeks as she felt vanders arms tighten around her, maeve immediately finding comfort in the mans arms.
then, a loud, maniacal cackle exploded around her, making her clap her hands over her ears to block out the deafening noise.
the walls started to light up with more and more memories. most of them with vi, powder, mylo, claggor. a few with her parents. but only one truly stuck out too her.
"maeve! wake up, wake up, wake up!" powders voice exclaimed, loud giggles falling from her mouth as she jumped ontop of the bed mae slept in.
mylo jumped with her, the one time they ever got along, laughing and smiling as they woke up the brunette girl. claggor stood on the side with a bright smile.
"bye, sugar" she groaned as she turned around, now laying on her side underneath the covers. suddenly she felt the heavy weight of the two children on her.
"get off, get off!" she laughed, trying to push them off of her. "no way! get up!" mylo laughed as powder jumped on top of them.
"alright, alright! get off of her, i think shes awake." vi walked into the room, a small chuckle falling from her lips.
"aw, man." powder said with disappointment as she piled off of maeve. "ill go get us breakfast." mylo muttered as he left, claggor following behind him.
maeve sat up, using her hands to lift herself up and let herself lean on the wall behind her.
"so, why'd they want me up so early?" maeve rubbed her eye as vi sat herself down on the bed, leaning against one elbow as she laid near maeves legs.
"vanders making his signature pancakes, but they didn't wanna eat without you." vi chuckled, shaking her head and looking down at her hands.
"pancakes? oh my god. come on!" maeve immediately jumped out from underneath the covers, grabbing ahold of vi's hand and dragging her along.
suddenely, vi pulled her back, spinning her around so the two of them were face to face.
bright smiles lit up on their faces as they looked into eachother eyes. the chemistry unmatched as they held there for a moment.
she never wanted to leave.
suddenly, everything went back to its original state. the white walls, the screams and the ringing that flew through her head ached her.
THE LIGHT
THE LIGHT
THE LIGHT
THE LIGHT
the voices shouted at her as she opened her eyes back up. her breaths were eratic yet shallow as she struggled.
"what about the light? shut up!" she cried out, everything becoming so overwhelming she had no idea what to do.
STEP INTO THE LIGHT.
"please, mae. don't leave me, please. i can't lose you again." the cries of vi started to echo through the walls, she immediately flicked her gaze towards it.
"vi?..." she murmured to herself. "vi! im right here! im here!" she started to scream, but it was no luck. no one heard her screams.
STEP INTO THE LIGHT.
the voice repeated, but maeve was skeptical. was it a trick? was she really dead? none of it made sense.
the ringing in her head never helped; the voices cackled in her face, half-mocking, finding humor in her struggle.
"please," vi's voice cried out, sobs breaking through as she clung to the girl's body.
maeve heard vi's cries, and pain pierced her chest. she inhaled sharply, her feet pressing against the cold floor, moving her forward.
a loud cackle echoed through the space, but maeve didn't care. she didn't care what was coming next. all she needed was to find her way back to vi— dead or alive, she was going to do it.
her hand reached out, her finger tips brushing against the bright light, a sharp coldness flooding her arm. a strange, tingling sensation surged through her, and she jerked back, startled by the sudden shock.
"she's gone, vi," caitlyn's voice cut through the air, but maeve refused to accept it.
without hesitation, she plunged her hand back into the light, desperate. the cold stung, but she stepped further in, wincing as it consumed her— until everything went black.
