▌IT WAS TIME FOR THE THREE girls to plead their case to the council. nerves bubbled inside of the brunette girl while they made their way to the councillors main residence.

due to what maeve did years ago with her last cut on the side of her, the cut that was on her leg started to heal quicker and quicker, the pain slowly slipping away.

"are we ready?" caitlyn asked as they all climbed up the stairs that lead to the councillors room. maeve stood unsure, her face cold as she stood between vi and caitlyn.

maeve felt vi's hands snake around hers, interlocking their fingers as mae looked up at the girl who nodded slightly. "let's do it."

the doors opened as the three of them stepped in, worry settled inside of maeve. yet she still stood confident beside the two girls.

the seven councillors sat at their seats, "we have greater concerns than a dip in profits. the sheriff betrayed us. we need better information." mrs. kiramman spoke up against another councillor.

jayce spoke up. "we need to act. before anyone else gets killed."

"perhaps marcus was operating independently. what could anyone in the undercity offer him that he didn't have up here?" another councillor spoke.

none of the 7 noticed the three girls listening into their conversations until caitlyn finally spoke up. "it's not what they offered him,"

the three started to walk forward, caitlyn slightly before them as she spoke. "it's what he had to lose." the trio stepped into the light, revealing themselves as vi removed her hand from maeves, leaving the girl cold.

maeve glanced around the room, noticing every single one of the councillors had their eye on her. she squirmed under their gaze, yet still standing confident beside the other two girls.

"councillors, my daughter and her friends have a unique insight into our situation." mrs. kiramman stood up, looking towards her daughter and sending her a nod. "thank you." caitlyn looked around.

"councillors, this is vi and maeve. they were born in the undercity." she paused for a moment, "even though we failed them in countless ways," she leaned towards the two.

"they risked everything to show me what life is really like down there." maeve looked towards caitlyn, shocked to hear these things come out of her mouth.

"people are starving, sick, ravaged by shimmer." the councillors all leaned forward, listening to the girls words, "they live in constant fear of the coordinated efforts of violent crime lords."

maeve watched all their expressions drop with sudden interest, "one man leads these efforts. silco." caitlyn finished her small speech.

the rest of the conversation started to blur out, nothing making sense as she stared down at the ground. she had no hope if she wanted to be honest.

they had never listened, so why would they now?

ofcourse they won't listen to you. your worth nothing. she shook her head, the things in her head decided to come around at the worst time. maeve wanted nothing more then to scream for them to shut up.

"her name is jinx." vi spoke up, bringing maeve back to reality. vi's voice was soft, she sounded tired and sad. maeve stepped forward with vi, grabbing ahold of the girls hand in which she gladly took for comfort.

"this jinx has the gemstone?" jayce asked them. where they all just nodded. "then we have to go in by force."

councillor mel spoke up from beside jayce as he stood up, "that could trigger war."

"there are good people down there." caitlyn stepped forward to defend the undercity as best as she could. another councillor scoffed, "bad ones too."

"we are right here?" maeve spoke up with sarcasm. but vi shook her head as she looked at her. causing mae to shut up for the moment.

"even if we wanted to invade, they have shimmer." the brunette agreed with a hum. then she rolled her eyes as jayce spoke up again, "we have hextech."

"wow, your ego is far up your ass isn't it?" maeve stepped forward, ignoring vi's protests. her eyebrows furrowed as her eyes glared at the man.

"we've been talking about talking for weeks now. they're still cleaning the blood off the bridge, when do we say enough is enough?"

councillor mel started to speak with jayce. "it must be our last resort. there may be a diplomatic solution." her hands were interlocked infront of her, her elbows sat on the table.

jayce looked around towards each of the councillors, all of them agreeing with mel. jayce then rolled his eyes, "what?" vi said with a shallow breath.

"you want to negotiate with him?" vi asked with anger and disbelief. stepping forward to meet maeve in the middle of the large circle.

mrs. kiramman spoke up. "it may be the only way to avoid further bloodshed."

"it's bullshit! thats what it is." maeve breathed, "you can't talk to him. he hates you and everything you stand for?" vi spoke up, spinning in a circle, facing all of them one by one.

"he's vile, evil. he will never back down. whether theres blood or not, he will get what he wants by the end of the day. but none of you idiots want to get it through your head, because then you'd be wrong." maeve spoke her thoughts.

"enforcers, please escort them out." a councillor stood from his chair, "piss off. i remember where your fancy damn door is." anger filled inside of maeve.

"oh and, when you do decide to not listen to us, again. i get the 'told you so' card." maeve smiled as she slammed the door behind her. vi sent them all a glare before immediately going to follow the angered girl.

the rain dropped from the heavy clouds, maeve was fuming. "mae! where are you going?" vi yelled behind the girl, who shoved her hands into her back pockets.

vi rushed down the small amounts of stairs as she caught up with the girl, standing underneath the rain within a few feet of the girl.

"it was never going to work vi. all of this shit was a waste of time." she was upset, angry. so was vi, and to be honest, all of them were fuming underneath it all.

vi sighed, her voice gentle with the girl despite it all. "look, your pissed, i'm pissed. but we can find a way to work this out, we can find a way to save everything—"

"and then what, vi? we become heros, everyone loves us" she threw her hands up. vi's eyebrows furrowed, "why are you being like this?" she asked.

"because this is who i am, vi! ive lost hope in everything. the undercity will never get justice, we'll never get rid of the toxicity that runs through the air of the lanes." maeve shook her head.

"i was so stupid to think anything could actually change." the rain drowned them, the two of them soaked as they stood there, their eyes glaring eachother down.

"we can stop silco, we can save powder—" vi was cut off yet again, "powder? powder's gone now. all thats left is jinx. how many times do we have to tell you that theres no saving her."

"how many times do i have to tell you that i can save her. im her sister, i know who she is, and this isn't her." vi stepped forward. she was starting to get mad at her girl. but maeve didn't care.

"people change, vi! i've changed, you've changed. powder has changed." she shook her head. "you said it yourself."

vi glared her down, watching as care ran out of maeve in seconds. "topside and bottom. oil and water. thats all there is." vi shook her head with disbelief.

"oil and water? yet we both come from the same side, and your the one who still has hope. im glad you have it, but i don't, vi."

maeve started to walk away. "so, just like that? everythings gone because of what some stupid rich pilties have to say? what about what we have."

"you can try and change it vi. stay with caitlyn in her big fancy house. get your sister back, but i'm not gonna keep hurting you and arguing with you anymore." maeves back was turned towards vi as caitlyn started to trail down the steps.

"whatever, maeve. go, do whatever you gotta do." vi scoffed, turning around. maeves heart stung, yet nothing could truly convince her that she belonged here and that something would change for the lanes.

maeve shrugged, walking forward and into the shadow, letting the rain consume her. "maeve, wait!" caitlyn shouted.

"just leave her, cait." vi said as she turned around aswell, going to stand beside caitlyn. "we have to keep trying. we can't lose her, we can make a new plan—"

"do yourself a favour, cupcake. go back to that big, shiny house of yours and just... forget about me, forget about her."

vi pulled her hood over her head, shoving her hands into her pockets as she walked away. leaving caitlyn alone in the rain. maeve and vi both losing yet another person they held close to their heart.
