꒰ ❛ where were you last time? ❜ ꒱
▌THE FOUR OF THEM TREADED themselves through the nasty waters of the sewer, firelight bugs flew in the air, their green backs lighting up the shadows.
caitlyn spun around with her eyes stuck on them, "what are they?" she then asked, trailing behind vi and maeve. "we call them firelights, never seen so many though."
ever since leaving the tree, maeve didn't feel happy. like it had been sucked out of her as soon as she stepped back into the toxic air of zaun.
vi noticed it, but she didn't say anything. when all she wanted to do was give her a hug and comfort her like she used to do.
the four of them made it to the bridge that connected piltover and zaun. the same bridge to many memories held, the memories that flooded inside her head every single day.
they all walked along it, the fog covering their bodies as they did their best to steer clear of anyone they could. vi's head was low, deep in thought. her expression was uneasy as she trailed behind them.
then, she stopped in her tracks. maeve noticed immediately, looking over her shoulder as she looked at vi. "vi?" ekko asked as the other two stopped.
"i can't leave her again," she spoke, her eyes welling with tears as she stared at the ground.
ekko shook his head, "you can't change her."
"i have to try." vi wasn't giving up anytime soon. ekko let out a small sigh, walking forward and embracing the girl in a hug. "don't get yourself killed." he mumbled.
vi let out a chuckle. "no promises."
her eyes moved to caitlyn who wrapped her arms around the girl, a small hug captivating everything. "it's been real, cait. thanks. for everything." cait hugged her a little tighter.
mae stood back, her eyes looking into the fog. "am i finally gonna get that hug, princess, or do i have to wait 'till after you save the city." she chuckled.
maeve let out a small giggle, stepping forward and looking into the girls eyes, then she wrapped her hands around the girl. maeve immediately sunk into the hug.
the familiar arms wrapped around her body, tears welled in her eyes as she refused to let go for a moment. "after i save the world, im gonna come and beat your ass." maeve shoved her face into her shoulder some more.
"looking forward to it, princess, ill be right here when you wanna get to that part." the two of them pulled away. vi's hand lingering on maeve's cheek.
maeve hadn't felt like this in years, she felt warm, she felt like she could do anything with this girl by her side.
their history was unmatched, nothing made maeve smile more then what they had when they were younger. and what maeve would do to get all of it back.
once vi's hand started to slip, maeve felt cold. vi turned her back with slow steps, and the brunette watched the fog take over her body.
ekko and caitlyn shared a look while maeves eyes sere fixated on the walking girl. "come on, mae, we gotta move." ekko grabbed her arm and started to pull her away.
tears welled in her eyes, as if it was a forever goodbye.
suddenly, large and bright lights turned on. blinding the three who stood infront of them. "halt!" multiple men yelled, their hands occupied by shot guns that they held up.
"what the fuck, caitlyn?" maeve used her arm to sheild the light from her eyes. "what the hell is this?" ekko copied her actions.
maeve watched as marcus came out from behind the enforcers. caitlyn rushed to reach into her pocket, "sir! i have proof. silco's behind everything." she held up her enforcers badge.
maeve rolled her eyes yet still stayed in her position in between caitlyn and ekko. marcus stepped forward, grabbing ahold of one of the enforcers guns and shoving it down slowly.
shaking his head no, he started walking towards the three. "show me." his voice was daring, it sent chills down the brunettes back.
caitlyn turned towards ekko, hinting towards the glowing gem. "i know this man, caitlyn, that is not a good idea." maeve warned.
"shit." he quietly exclaimed, ultimately, with hope, ekko showed the guard infront of them what was inside the capsule. the guard let out a sigh, ekkos eyes widening once realising what was about to happen.
ekko flew backwards as marcus pulled out a shot gun, pulling the trigger and watching it only just miss the boy. "jesus christ, your so predictable." maeve mumbled to herself as she put her hands up with an eye roll.
marcus bent down, grabbing the capsule the gem stone was being held in. his gun switching between caitlyn and maeve.
"maeve!" she heard vi's voice scream loudly. yet it was so distant, she nearly missed it. "i told you to leave this alone." marcus growled. the gun sat at caitlyns forehead as she started leaning back and away.
maeve jumped forward, snatching the weapon out of the mans hands. "yeah? years ago, you were being told the same thing. actions have consequences." maeve smirked as she remembered what had happened to him.
marcus at there with no fear rushing through his body due to the amounts of guards that started to rush forward.
large swarms of firelights started to surround the bridge, the green off of them sent a hue to emerge all around them, the colour mixing with the heavy fog.
everyones eyes looked around, watching the unusual event happen. suddenly one landed on top of the barrel of the gun, maeve looked at it closer, watching its unusual actions.
thats when her eyes widened, realising what it really was. "fuck sake. its a bomb!" maeve threw the gun across the bridge, ducking down and preparing herself.
hundreds of explosions blew on that bridge, screams could be heard from miles away as they all suffered it. bodies were scattered along the bridge, and nothing could prepare maeve for how she felt when she had seen it.
her stomach was on the ground, her head felt dizzy while her ears rung loudly. she felt like jelly, but she used the strength she had in her to lift herself up.
but once she looked down, she noticed the large cut that sat deeply in her leg. she let out a loud groan as she walked, the shards of glass that stabbed in the opposite leg didn't help either. maeve heard a gunshot, a small gasp leaving her mouth as she tried hearing it again.
she turned around. immediate memories filled her head as she had seen all the lifeless bodies scattered everywhere, each of them breathless as they lost their lives.
she looked over, noticing marcus' body that sat at a distance. sorrow filled her body, not towards the man, but towards the daughter that was awaiting him to come home the next day.
"fuck," maeve muttered as she tried standing up, immediately falling back to the ground. feeling vi immediately catch her, her hand raising and sitting on her jaw.
they made eye contact before maeve looked away and behind the girl, noticing jinx lift up the capsule from marcus' hold. raising it with a hum.
"you need to get out of here." maeve said, her voice still strong and confident. but it was soft in tone. doing anything she can to try and shove vi away.
"im not leaving, come 'ere" she lifted maeves body, pain rushed throughout her body. but when the two of them turned, they saw jinx standing in all her glory.
the three of them let out small gasps, as they stared eachother down. jinx immediately grabbed ahold of the machine gun on her hip.
maeve used all of her strength, shoving vi away as she practically flew herself towards the railings. "fuck!" she groaned loudly, landing on her hip as she gripped her thigh.
her gaze shifted, her eyes watching ekko fly over the two of them as he immediately went for attack towards jinx. caitlyn rushed over to help, her eyes immediately looking between us.
vi stood up as quickly as light moved, immediately rushing over to maeve as caitlyn followed. "why do we do this to ourselves." she smiled, whimpers still falling from her mouth with each breath.
"i've got you." vi looped maeves hand around her shoulders, her hand gripping onto vi's as she was lifted up. her vision was fuzzy, like it had been for pretty much the whole day, but this time, it didn't seem to go away whatsoever.
ekko turned, throwing the capsule he had taken off of jinx into caitlyns hands. "go!" he then screamed, facing towards jinx once again as they stood at a distance.
the four of them watched as jinx emerged from the shadows that sat beneath the fog. her eyes were full of anger, jealousy and determination.
maeve felt to weak to do anything, instead hanging over vi's shoulder, vulnerability swinging off of her like it was nothing. she wanted to take care of herself, she didn't need anyone.
but she knew this time it was different. vi started turning her body to start walking back, maeve and vi's eyes lingered on jinx with tears in their eyes.
how could one change so much? she was unrecognisable. and maybe thats what she had been going for, but maeve swore she'd always be able to find her baby behind those eyes. but now it was just empty.
jinx's laugh echoed in maeves head, "shut up!" she exclaimed weakly, voices starting to grow in her head again.
"i can't, vi, i can't." she shook her head. energy was draining out of her quicker then she had anticipated.
"yes you can, m, i've got you, i'm right here." but maeve shook her head, "but where were you last time?" black edged started to close in around her eyes.
the sentence stung in vi's heart. she knew she fucked up, she knew. but she didn't have any control over that, she thought maeve was dead. but neither then or now did she have any words to explain herself.
