▌THE FEELING OF HER WRISTS tied behind her tightly sent pain throughout her arms, her vision was covered by a sack that sat over her head.

grunts left the british girls mouth as she struggled to get out of the hold. "it's not gonna work" maeve said groggily, her throat dry as she spoke.

"i knew it was a mistake trusting the both of you." she spoke, finally giving up on the breaking out of the hold. "you've been a real picnic yourself." vi replied sarcastically.

"and you! maeve! you said you'd shoot them off." she started to argue, her voice laced with more anger then ever.

"jesus, man. it isn't my fault she came up behind you. if you hadn't noticed, i was trying avoid losing my head!"

"i'm not the one who walked us into, not one, but two of silco's traps." the thick british accent rang in maeve's head. now hearing caitlyn trying to break out of the hold again.

"where did you find this chick, vi? 'im entitled and enjoy making everything an argument because i have to be right', land?" maeve said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

violet let out a chuckle, before answering caitlyns previous statement. "this isn't silco, it's someone else."

"how do you know?" caitlyn asked, "cause we'd already be dead." maeve answered blandly for the pink haired girl.

"oh, very nice." caitlyn let out a shocked chuckle at the start of her comment. "when were you planning to tell me that your lunatic sister works for him?" she added.

"just as soon as you came clean about what the hell you're really doing down here." vi snapped, the two girls then started to argue.

maeves eyes felt fuzzy, while her body felt like it had lost all her muscle and strength. she was stuck to the ground, and it seemed like she couldn't move her body at all.

a small gasp left her mouth as sudden pain ran through the scar on her torso, her eyes squeezing shut behind the sack as she jolted forward.

she let out a small whimper, before hearing the loud creak of a metal door open, a small amount of light finally reaching into the room.

"whats going on?" caitlyns accent spoke, stopping her and vi's bickering.

"hey, stop! get your hands off of me!" vi suddenly shouted. then, two hands wrapped around maeves waist. "get the fuck off of me." she wiggled against the mans hold but failed immediately due to her strength being drained out of her.

"let me go!" vi shouted. "vi? mae?" is the last thing maeve heard before the door banged shut, the loud metal scraping against eachother while doing so.

the man swung maeve, his arms looped under her legs as he carried her bridal style, "jeez, thought we'd go on a few dates before this step." she joked.

the man then stood her up, cuffing her to what seemed like a large pole. "mae, are you there?" she heard vi's voice. "yes. unfortunately." her voice was bland as she replied.

"we're being kidnapped and you still hate me? seriously?" vi scoffed, her voice laced with disbelief as she spoke to the girl. "your asking me that? fuck off, vi." maeve rolled her eyes.

suddenly the sack was pulled off of her head, her long brunette hair messy from underneath it. a small groan left her mouth. the pain that ran through her scar became worse and worse.

her eyes were still fuzzy, nothing looked clear. a dark room was all she was able to see infront of her, vi was cuffed to a pole beside her, her face angry as she watched someone walk away from her.

maeve blinked a couple times, her vision clear now. sat infront of them was a masked person, his leg was resting on his other one as he stared them both down.

"you shy? or just ugly?" vi spoke up loudly.

"you know, when you say shit like that, no wonder we're always an inch closer to dying everyday." maeve nodded her head, earning a scoff from vi, removing her eyes from the figure in front of them.

the masked person stepped forward after standing up, something felt unsettling about the whole situation. firelights have never been known to 'kidnap' people. and now all of a sudden they're the ones copping it? maeve was confused.

the boy then removed the mask from his face, yet she was still unsure of who it was due to the shadows covering half of him.

but once he stepped forward once again, maeve felt the whole world drop from beneath her. "you two look good for dead girls."

"what, the fuck." maeve gasped, her heart pounding against her chest as she watched the boy glare down at the two. "ekko?" vi spoke with shock.

"what do you know about this?" ekko held out a machine, the small glowing blue gem stone hovering inside it. maeve and vi both stared at it.

"nothing. what the hell is this all about?" vi shook her eyes away from the gem. maeve then looked back up at ekko, still in shock that he standing right infront of her.

"no seriously, can someone fill me in. i've been with this, crasher for not even a week and i'm already going mad." maeve groaned.

vi sent her a look, "what were you doing with jinx?" he then asked. maeve was shocked, ekko and powder used to be bestfriends. now all it seemed like they were complete enemies, ekko losing all love for the three girls in general.

"her name is powder. and we just found her when you and your goons showed up." vi had a sudden outburst, her eyes locked with ekko's.

maeve decided to stay silent. mostly because the pain that was shooting through her started to get worse and worse after the fight. but also because, vi had more right to talk then her. that was her sister and she saw how she grew up, how shes changed.

no way that doesn't hurt.

vi let out a scoff, "it's me. vi. same person who used to take you down to the junk heap and hose you down when you got covered in grease," she paused.

"thats mae. the same person who would run off with you on goose chances and carry you on her back when you complained your legs hurt, even when you were covered in mud" vi pulled on her hand cuffs, stepping closer towards ekko as she proved they were the same people.

"that was a long time ago. people change." he spat out, "yeah. im getting that." vi looked away towards the ground, then glancing at maeve who was staring away at the wall beside her.

"are you working for silco?" maeve let out a scoff after ekko asked the big question. "your kidding right?" she shook her head, now looking at the white haired boy.

"why would i be?" he furrowed his eyebrows. "fuck. you." vi looked at him with disbelief, anger and confusion. shaking her head slightly.

ekko stammered over his words, "i thought you were dead. i saw maeves body, you and powder no where to be seen. now you show up with eachother, plus, a piltie and give her a tour of the lanes?" ekko paced back and forth.

"you were following us? why didn't you say something?" maeve stepped forward. ekko stopped infront of her, "i didn't know if i could trust you."

maeves eyes widened, "trust me? you didn't know if you could— what!" she shook her head with shock, "so you just come out swinging?"

"gee, i wonder who i learned that from?" ekko turned his head to face vi, obviously hinting towards her.

"ah, well, you shoulda learned more. you still punch like a little boy." ekko walked over to vi, standing infront of her before turning his back slightly,

"and you still block with your face!" he then spun back around, getting up close and personal to vi's face as he defended himself.

vi scoffed, "i remember when you wouldn't stand up to me, or to her." maeve heard the cuffs undo behind vi's back, suddenly breaking free of them as she pulled ekko into a tight hug.

maeve stood there, emotions jumbled in her body as she watched the two of them hug. "i missed you, little man."

the brunette felt jealous. as much as she hated vi at times, they still haven't hugged like that, barely even a touch unless maeve was saving her ass.

"fuck me," maeve groaned, slamming her arms forward and snapping the cuffs in two. "gotta do it all by myself." she mumbled to herself.

ekko dived deeper into the hug, his head resting against vi's shoulder. maeve stepped forward, her eyes moving around the room, looking at everything.

suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder pull her back, arms wrapping around her waist as she stood there shocked.

as she noticed the white hair graze on her cheek, her arms immediately wrapped around on top of his shoulders. squeezing tightly.

"i missed you." she mumbled against his shoulder. they stood there for a moment, taking in reality. she then felt her feet lift off the ground.

"oh no," ekko spun her around, "oh my god!" she laughed loudly, ekko setting her back down on the ground as he pulled away, smiling at the girl.

vi watched from behind them, jealousy brewing inside her. she'd never admit that though. yet she was happy, reunited with the little boy who meant the world to her. and seeings maeves smile, that was something else.

"i gotta show you both something." ekko opened the metal door after walking over to it. it led them right outside, the bright sun shining down over the whole area.

laughter and the wind gushing filled the area and both vi and maeve looked around. their hands above their eyes so the sun doesn't shine so brightly in them.

maeves eyes widened as she saw. in the middle of the area sat a large tree, multiple different cubbys sat on it as the leaves shined a bright, forest green.

multiple different coloured graffiti doodles littered everywhere while people on the familiar hover boards flew around.

"is that a real tree?" vi asked, stepping up beside both ekko and maeve. "pretty cool, huh?" ekko smirked.

"i want ten of them and now!" vi and ekko chuckled at maeves comment. she spun around, everything circling around her as she admired it.

something about the whole thing brought out her old self, the fun, care free self. maybe it was the drawings and how they reminded her of powder, or maybe its because its so secret, just like their hideout from when she was little.

she felt happy and safe. safer then she's felt in a long time. "when i first saw it, i knew this was the place." ekko nodded as he stared up at his master piece. then turning around a leaning on the railing of the balcony they had stepped on.

"you built all this?" vi asked, stepping forward and leaning her forearms on the railing. "not alone," ekko shook his head.

"after vander... died, silco flooded the lanes with shimmer. he didn't care what it did to people. everyone here was an addict or a victim."

maeves eyes fell her the hand that fiddled with her fingers, remembering it all to well. remembering what happened to her during it all, what she did to survive.

maeve stepped forward, standing beside vi. a small kid sat with his friends, the three of them looking up at the trio, sending a wave, in which maeve sent back a warm smile.

"they needed somewhere safe to start again." ekko continued explaining as the two girls stayed silent.

"i should've been there. for you. for mae," vi's hand landed on maeves upper arm, shivers creeping up her back as she looked down at her hand.

"for everyone." vi shook her head, taking her hand off of maeve and looking down at her feet now instead. "that's a good way to drive yourself crazy." ekko looked at the girl.

"if i just went with you that day, maybe none of this would have happened." ekko started to blame himself, but this time, maeve stopped it.

"no. stop. vi, you did what you thought was best, you didn't know what was gonna happen, none of us did." a pause lingered between them.

"and ekko, you were a child, you were smart, strong but nothing could ever prepare you for what happened. stop blaming yourselves for the shit none of us knew was gonna happen?" maeve looked at the two who didn't dare to make eye contact.

maeve sighed, "maybe you would've been dead... or changed." vi then added on to maeves small speech.

"powders gone, vi. all that's left is jinx, and she belongs to silco." ekko shook his head, anger bubbled in vi, "you're wrong. she's still there. i can reach her."

she then turned towards maeve. "when you said what you said to her, about voices, you saw how she was. you saw powder come out, i know you did."

maeve shook her head, "sure but—" she sighed. "you also saw how she was once these fools came around, she went mental."

"i know my sister." vi turned away. her hands balled into fists, while ekko and maeve shared a look. "i've got one more thing to show you." he nodded.

"caitlyns probably shitting herself." maeve giggled.

the two of them followed ekko to around and behind the tree. art supplies sat everywhere while multiple different artworks stood out to maeve.

but when she turned, she had never been more shocked about something like this.

a large portrait sat on the tree trunk, a younger vi and maeve sat in the middle as multiple people were painted around them.

claggor, benzo, mylo, powder... vander.

vi's eyes twinkled as she stared at it, but nothing could rip maeves eyes from her younger self. her smile was bright, her faint freckles drawn on her face and multiple loose hairs sat over her face.

she was in awe. remembering everything from her past.

"this is everyone we've lost. the price of our freedom." ekko stood confident as he stared up at the piece. vi's mouth was agape, her hands now shoved in her jacket pockets.

maeve stepped closer, her hand now reaching out for it as she grazed her fingertips over the dried paint. "some of it enforcers, most was silco."

ekko paused, almost preparing for and uncomforted feeling to hit him.

"your sister works for him not because she has to, but because she wants to." ekko shared. "im sorry, but thats who she is now."

maeve's heart cracked, she believed ekko more then anything though. ekko's been around, he's been watching, investigating. he knows more then the two of them have in years.

vi took a deep breath, her eyes now fixated on powders painting. maeve watched her take in reality, her chest started to feel heavy.

"alright, lets go get the loony toon." maeve shook her head, starting to walk away. ekko jogged infront of her, opening the wide metal door.

"m'lady" he bowed, "thank you, kind sir." she curtsied sarcastically, walking into the long hallway, ekko then stepped forward, starting to walk faster.

"hey, vi?" she turned around to face the red haired girl who's head swung low. she hummed, looking up at the girl.

"it really isn't your fault." she shook her head, a small smile rose to her face before turning back around and jogging towards ekko, slinging her arm around his shoulders.

vi stared at her for a moment, her heart racing against her ribs as she took in the words. she wanted nothing more then to go back into the past. but she knew she couldn't, and the words that came out of maeves mouth made her feel that tiny bit better.

they reached the door where inside was a panicked caitlyn. maeve watched as her chest rose and deflated with each heavy breath.

a kid then sat infront of her, holding a small bowl of water out infront of her. offering it, caitlyn let out a shutter, smacking the bowl out of his hands. watching the water go everywhere.

caitlyns eyebrows furrowed as she then looked up to be met with ekko sitting in the window with daring eyes. his face confident and fierce.

"what have you done with them?" caitlyn slammed her shoulder into the large pillar behind her. ekko gave no reply, keeping his cold face in place.

caitlyn let out a small huff, "listen, let them go. i brought them here. it's me you want."

vi and maeve then turned each corner of both sides of the large circle window. "hear that? cait's come to our rescue." she winked, "our hero." vi said with sarcasm, a small smirk sat on their faces.

maeves back slid down and sat against the curve of the circle, swinging her legs and throwing them over ekkos knee.

caitlyn let out a small gasp as she seen them, "you're..." she stammered. "but i thought you... i thought they were hurting you!" she shook her head as she spoke.

"by him? he didn't stand a chance." maeve chuckled, looking at the girl.

"they tell me i can trust you. you get a pass back topside, that's it." ekko spoke to the girl who still bubbled with confusion. "lets go."

"i never said anything, actually." maeve mumbled. "dude, shut up." ekko rolled his eyes with sarcasm, "did you just dude me?" maeve stood up.

ekko shook his head with confidence. "oh, your on." maeve leaped forward, fake fighting with ekko as they all walked. suddenly ekko picked her up, flipping her upside down and moving her around.

"oh my god! oh my god! your gonna kill me, stop!" she squealed.

"are they like, together?" caitlyn asked vi who walked beside her.

"they were close when we were little, i guess now after its been so long, their friendship is stronger." vi shrugged, watching the two with jealousy. maeve's self struggling to get out of ekkos hold.

"im gonna beat your ass!" she squealed as they finally reached outside, ekko let go of the girl as she sent a small punch to his shoulder.

"i'll get you next time." she smiled.

vi watched her some more, she missed that smile, she missed those laughs and those sassy come backs. she missed it all. but she hates the fact that she made maeve feel betrayed. she left her alone. she'd never forgive herself for that.

the four of them stepped outside, caitlyn immediately stepping forward and spinning around, taking in the scenery, just as maeve did moments earlier.

"it's beautiful." her accent spoke, mixing in with the birds chirping and the wind howling. "if you people had it your way, it'd be rubble and ash." ekkos demeanour changed from happy and playful to serious in a matter of seconds.

"it's a misunderstanding. they think you work for silco." caitlyn tried being reasonable, instead angering the boy more.

"your people hunt us like animals, silco pays them to do it." ekko now walking forward, getting closer to caitlyn.

maeve suddenly clutched the side of her, stumbling over before vi caught her in her arms. "woah, hey, whats up?" vi said into the girls ear.

"ever since earlier with powder, the scar, it burns." she groaned, her eyes closed as she huffed. she then stood up slowly, looking at vi before back at the two.

"im fine. sorry." she immediately stepped forward, her hands landed on caitlyn and ekkos shoulders, pulling them apart. "ekko, she believes what she's saying, okay? she's not your enemy"

as maeve dealt with that, vi stood there confused, almost helpless. that scar healed, years, ago. why was it just now hurting, especially after being with powder?

"oh, yeah? then whats this?" ekko revealed the glowing gem stone to caitlyn, holding it in his finger tips. caitlyn looked unfazed though.

"you got it. you have to let me take that back." ekko brang the gem down, rolling it into his palm and holding it tightly. caitlyn looked away with a sigh.

"what the hell is it? why is it so important?" maeve shook her head, vi then followed over to her, standing in the middle of cait and mae, staring caitlyn down.

"it's a gemstone." caitlyn said simply, maeve exhaled, "yeah, no shit, why's it so important?"

"it was stolen during the attack, by your sister." vi scoffed, "you just forgot to mention that?" she asked towards caitlyn who's eyes were still focused on the ground.

"right, yeah, so my little sister stealing something, doesn't explain why its so important?" she furrowed her eyebrows with confusion, looking around cluelessly.

caitlyn sighed "with this, someone with the right knowledge could build any hextech device." a pause lingered between them all, "if enforcers are becoming more... aggressive, that's why."

caitlyn finished explaining, ekko fiddled with it between his fingertips. "we could beat silco with this." determination filled ekkos eyes while uncertainty filled the other threes.

"that won't solve things." caitlyn shook her head, her tone was now delicate, while her words still lingered against vi's head about the gem stone.

"easy for you to say. your people aren't dying all around you." ekko stepped forward, flying his arms up. "hey, your okay, ekko." maeve nodded, ekko sighed softly then looking at the ground.

"ekko, it's wrong what's been done to you. you'd be well within your rights to keep it. i couldn't blame you." a pause sat as ekko shared a look with caitlyn.

sympathy filled her eyes as she continued speaking, "but... if you do, this cycle of violence will never stop. this is our best shot at setting the record straight. this city needs healing, more than i ever realised. please let me help you."

ekko visibly showed signs of giving into her offer, and honestly, maeve would have too. she was right, the city needs saving, and trying to ruin one person that could detroy thousands out of anger wouldn't help anything.

"you got a plan?" he asked towards cait, "i have a friend on the council. let me take the gemstone to him." caitlyn paused as ekko looked away.

"he'll listen to me. your people wouldn't have to hide anymore."

during this whole interaction, maeve stared between the two. the pains turned into tingling, uncontrollable and uncomfortable tingling that sat beneath her skin.

vi continued sharing small glances to the girl as she stood next to her, her pinky bouncing against her pants as she grew worried. but she knew she couldn't do anything about it.

ekko held it in between his fingers again. "one condition. i'm the one who gives it to them." ekko nodded.

"oh yay. more freaking walking, im gonna be the fittest person in both top and under." maeve sarcastically said, the others giggled as vi leaned down slightly.

"you already are." vi winked before following behind the others with a large smirk planted on her face. maeve was shocked, but she wasn't complaining.

instead, she wished vi had said things like that more.
